transport in Lisbon

Advantages: Very cheap
Disadvantages: the taxi ride back to the airport!

We visited Lisbon in June 2006. The metro is really easy to negotiate, just four lines (red, yellow, blue and green). We bought "day tickets" from the booth at our local station (as recommended by the hotel receptionist) for around 3 Eur for one days unlimited travel. The ticket was rechargable, so the next day we took the same ticket back and paid for our travel for the rest of our stay. We didn't realise however, until our last day, that these ...
...metro stations were all very clean and modern. We also took the main line train to the beach at Estoril. We bought our tickets at the machine and were amazed that it worked out the single fare as 1.50 Eur each! When the ticket collector came to inspect the tickets while we were on the train I was half expecting him to ask for more money, but no, that was the correct price. Advantages: Easy to use underground: Helpful friendly people
Disadvantages: Hire a car in advance otherwise it is expensive

...except for the difficulty in getting accustomed to the left hand drive! We crossed the longest bridge in Europe which was spectacular but the road tolls are quite annoying (just because we weren't used to them I suppose). We took some taxis and the drivers were very friendly (just like London cabbies). They found it hilarious when I tried to speak in Portuguese. They drove a bit like maniacs but not unlike many city cab drivers. We took a ferry ...
...ferry but it did the trip and was very cheap. The buses were also cheap and the driver told us that our tickets would cover us on trams and buses for the day. Unfortunately we didn't get to take a tram. The one thing that struck me about Lisbon was the friendliness of the people.
