Paris, je t'aime

Advantages: Great metro service, beautiful city to explore on foot,
Disadvantages: Perhaps more difficult for disabled people, busy busy busy, lots of sellers and beggars, STRIKES

...some of my knowledge of getting around Paris, having spent 9 months living there and having visited on numerous occasions. '''BY AIR: -'''One great way of seeing any city is from the air, and it _is_ possible to take helicopter tours over the city. They're pretty pricey though - one quote I found was €250 for adults, €220 for children. Flying is also a popular way of getting to Paris. Paris has three airports - Roissy Charles de Gaulle, Orly and ...
...are a useful way of getting from A to B, particularly with a lot of luggage. Outside the big railway stations, you'll usually find plenty of taxis. Bear in mind that surcharges are often added when four or more people are travelling, or if you're carrying luggage. Taxis aren't cheap and there's always the fear that you might be getting a 'tourist rate' and an unnecessary detour to boot. Although it's not necessarily the best way to see Paris, it ...

Dressed in the traditional black waistcoats, dark trousers and white aprons we really felt we had entered a “Cafe Rene” film set Again the ability to quickly relate this to a much loved and familiar TV series gives added interest. We chose simple hot chocolate and cafe au lait, which cost 4.5 Euros, not too bad for central Paris, but it was before 12.00; be warned often prices for hot ...

Advantages: Courteous drivers; Easy to use municipal hire scheme
Disadvantages: Sometimes velib 'stations' are full (or empty)

...not as a way of getting around). Add to this that it's virtually free (if you return the bike to a station within half an hour you pay nothing, after that it's €1 per half hour until it's being held onto for a long time when the price ramps up) and it becomes a very attractive option. There are problems, of course. Stations at the bottom of hills tend to fill up leaving nowhere to park your bike, while those higher up can stand empty. But the terminals ...
...stations are, and exactly how many bikes are currently parked there, or how many spaces are available for you to park. Meanwhile a van with a big trailer shuffles bikes about, and takes damaged bikes to the barge workshop which moves about the Seine. There has been talk of replication of this scheme (albeit on a smaller scale) in London. The Mayor, Ken Livingstone, seems determined on the issue. But it is perhaps a statement on the UK mentality ...

Moving in Paris

Advantages: easy mean to move trough Paris , quick, efficient
Disadvantages: somestimes crowed , doesn't always smell so good

So as to continue my set of opinions about Paris, I’ll talk you about the way to get in and around Paris. To do just like inhabitants, the easiest way is to use public transports. They are really developed In Paris and it’s the cheapest way to move in Paris except if you prefer walking. To travel in Paris you’ll need to buy tickets, the cheapest way is to buy a “ carnet” of ticket, a “carnet” is a pack of ten ticket, it cost 9,30 euros almost ...
...85p. In fact if you stay a while in Paris, you should buy a pass that would allow you to use every public transport as much as you want. Such pass are valid for a week end or a week their price is various according to how long they are valid and how far you are allowed to go with it. Paris region (Paris + suburbs) is divided into 9 zones. Paris is contained in the zone 1, so if you only need to visit Paris zones 1 and 2 would be enough. Several ...

metro rocks

Advantages: fast
Disadvantages: small tickets that get lost easily

like london, paris has its own form of underground transport called the metro. Like the london underground it is relatively easy to navigate and takes you to your destination without fear of overground traffic jams. However, unlike london transport it is more reliable and less packed and on the whole a more enjoyable ride. Some of the trains actually run on tyres so you get less of a bump as well. The one scary thing is when loads of armed gendarme ...

Paris Metro

Advantages: cheap, easy and reliable
Disadvantages: take time to familiarise yourself with the metro

As with any city transport, once you've got used to the Paris Metro, it's really very simple and straightforward. Unlike London, which names its underground lines, Paris underground lines are named after the town or location at the end of the line. So for instance, in London, to travel North on the Northern line, the Paris equivalent would be to get on the Edgware line - i.e. the Northern most point of the Northern Line. To travel south, you'd ...

Only one word of caution: in Paris they have 1st class underground carriages. They are the carriages which have the most graffiti and damage! I booked a trip to Paris, and was impressed that it came with "free upgrade to 1st class metro travel". The carriages are in such a poor state, that I chose to travel standard class! ...

Make sure you know where you are meant to be going

Advantages: Car drivers mental so it took the strain out of driving
Disadvantages: Got lost could not get out of the station, no staff spoke English

The trains in Paris can be really confussing if you don't speak the language and don't know where you are going to. We stayed just outside Paris but wanted to visit the city for a day trip. Unlike our train stations the signs were really hard to follow, luckily going into Paris an English Gentleman realised we were lost and showed us which platform to get on and advised us which train was ours otherwise we would still be standing with our mouths ...
...when we went to get the train back to our hotel, we did not have a clue which platform and when we finally worked it out and got on what we thought was the right train, it got half way to where we wanted to go and then changed tracks, the train was very overcrowded and we were scared enough to start with, we promptly got off at the next station, my french is good enough to get me a cup of coffee and a pint of beer, but nowhere near good enough to ...

Viva la Metro...

Advantages: Cost effective, Effecient
Disadvantages: sometimes crowded.

I went to paris with my fiance on a weekend break, we had very little time to do ample amount of stuff. We didn't have a car, so we neede effecient means of transport that would be cost effective. And as if heaven sent, we discovered the Metro! This is the BEST means of transport you can use to get around Paris. Not only is it cheap, but it is fast, clean and comfortable-( if you can get a seat). We hardly spoke a word of french but we found it very ...
...at the right time and return safely. There are times when the metro does get crowded, and you cannot get a seat-so avoid the rush hours. Another good advantage is that the metro goes by every 10 mins so you don't have to wait long for it and the trains are signed very well so you will not get on the wrong one. The metro also runs 'till late so you can experience the night time of paris and still be able to get back to your hotel. All in all it is ...

Metro is the best

Advantages: cheap, quick, easy
Disadvantages: none

Any visitor to the beautiful city of Paris will find the easiest way to get around is the underground train system. Tickets are cheap, especially if bought as a "carnet". The system is so easy to understand and it is very difficult to get lost. Some of the stations are beautiful - Louvre is a work of art in itself. Another must see station is Bastille. I found the Metro much cleaner than it's counterpart in London and there was a significant absence ...

Open-topped bus and Metro

Advantages: Saves a lot of money and effort
Disadvantages: Metro can be crowded and have to watch for thieves

I recently spent a weekend in Paris and found the two easiest ways to get around where to use the open-topped tourist bus and the Metro. The bus cost around £12 but that was for 2 days and unlimited travel. It stops at all the best sites - Eiffel Tower, Champs Elysee, The Louvre, Notre Dame to name but a few. If you didnt know your way round Paris this is the ideal way to see everything - the whole tour is circular and takes about 2 hours but you ...

The Metro is great - even if you dont understand French the maps they give you are very good- as long as you get on the train that has the right destination on the front you cant go wrong (although I did by mixing up the stations Place D'Italie and Porte D'Italie!!! - remember which station you left from!!!) I got ...

Paris Metro

Advantages: Cheap, quick and reliable
Disadvantages: Can be a bit confusing for foreigners.

From my experience I think that the metro is by far the best way to get around Paris. I had no previous experience of using an underground system but I found it was easy to get the hang of. There are various ticket options available which can work out cheaper than buying a ticket each time. As i was staying in Paris for 5 days I chose to get the 5 day 'carte visite'. This allowed for unlimited access to the metro for the five days in areas 1 and ...
...about 26 euros. A 'carte visite' is also available which includes the Airport area but it worked out cheaper for us just to get the central paris 'carte' and pay for our Airport trip(s). When using the metro there are maps located at each station outside them as well so its easy to see where you need to go. There is also a map of the line on each actual train so you can check your on the right Metro. One word of warning though- if you keep consulting ...
