Getting around in San Francisco

...where you want to go. Getting around the city is best done n either a Tram or trolley bus. The trams cost 2 dollars a ride but you can get a day pass for about 6 dollars. Unlimited use for the day and you get to see a lot of the city. Expect to be a bit crowded. Walking is an option from Union Square but its very hilly so expect to get tired. Taxis are expensive and slow in the traffic. Eating Out. ----------- Eating can be cheap but most places ...
...and at a good price. There is lots of it too. The Italian cafes are very nice to eat in. If you would like to sit outside though, you must book in advance. Tables inside are freely available. Around the Square there are many nice Steak Houses and burger bars. Some cheap, others not so. Shop around. Lori's Diner can come highly recommended. Planet Hollywood is also nice to eat and not as busy as the one in London. Tables are not a problem. Down ...

I think that anyone taking a trip to San Francsico should make it their duty to ride on the cable cars. These are something very unique to San Francisco (although they are in other US cities too)and help to characterise it. They are a way of travelling and seeing the sights, (you wouldn't want to walk up some of those hills hehe) as well as being able to say that you have taken a ride on a true 'Cisco vehicle! Like many things San Francisco, the cable cars seem to be a relic of a bygone age existing to please the tourists. The cable cars have very limited coverage (i think there are less than ten routes) and in summer are rammed to bursting with other tourists. In terms of value for money - it all depends on the kind of trip you are on. Its not as cheap as normal public transport. If you're in San Francisco and you want to get around using means other than a car, then the BART is ok. Its really most useful if you intend to travel beyond the main city Inside the city the Bart has a limited number of stops and serves a rather limited geographical area. You can basically get up and down Market St and get around the Mission district. Outside the city center you can get as far afield as Fremont, Oakland and Richmond. Not sure ...
