Great fun monkeying around

Advantages: Duty and tax free shopping, totally different place, great views from the Rock
Disadvantages: Easy to get ripped off ,.

...a coach excursion to Gibraltar. Gibraltar is a promontory that juts out of the coastline of Spain. It belongs to Great Britain and it's citizens all hold British passports. We had a great visit but if you are considering the same sort of day trip, be warned, it was a lengthy journey. We were picked up at 5.45am and did not arrive back in Albufeira until 10.30pm, having had 5 hours in Gibraltar. We could have flown home and back a couple of times, ...
...from Portugal, but did at Gibraltar . Coach parties nowadays tend to drop you off at passport control at Gibraltar, as the drive through can take forever. There were huge queues of traffic the day we visited. GIBRALTAR ************************************** Our coach dropped us off and the guide walked with us through passport control. You do have to show your passports and our shopping was checked when we returned. That is because Gibraltar enjoys ...

Underwater in Gibraltar

Advantages: Fun in the sun
Disadvantages: It is not an island

...of Spain the Rock of Gibraltar is an unusual diving destination. Almost undiscovered by British divers, it offers a wealth of wreck, historical and scenic dives with warm(-ish) water within striking distance for a holiday. ------------------------------------------------------------------- HISTORY ------------------------------------------------------------------ The Rock of Gibraltar is part of the sea floor upended by powerful geological processes ...
...lived in the caves around Gibraltar between 120,000 and 60,000 years ago and the Rock was visited by Phoenician and Roman sea-farers who left offerings to the Gods there. The Muslim invasion of Europe began in Gibraltar in 711 and the Moors dominated for 700 years until 1462 when the Spanish captured the Rock. In 1704, a combined Anglo-Dutch force captured Gibraltar and the Treaty of Utrecht in 1813 ceded Gibraltar to the Crown of Great Britain. ...

A little bit of paradise within touching distance

Advantages: Everything
Disadvantages: Nothing

Gibraltar is in Spain but belongs to the UK and there have been many issues with all this in the past. I have made a few trips over to this great and fantastic country and have always found other things to try out and places to explore. The first thing I have to point out is the amazing view from the air when you are coming into land. The second thing is that you land on a high street - this is not a joke - they shut off the high street and you land. ...
...before you leap. Gibraltar is not a very hard place to navigate really and you have a choice of getting buses or a taxi once you leave the airport or even hire a car if you are going to leave Gibraltar and explore parts of Spain. All modes of transport are reasonably priced. Gibraltar can be a shock to some to start off with because nearly all people on the island speak fantastic English; I have only found the elders to not be too great on their ...

ENGLISH BOBBIES IN THE SUN

Advantages: British money, British speaking people.
Disadvantages: Crowded.

...is difficult to talk about Gibraltar without being pulled into the political situation which makes Gib part of British soil. This review is written more from a visitors point of view because it is what the visitor sees and enjoys in Gibraltar that makes interesting reading for a would be holiday maker, rather than an endless history lesson. This is how I see Gibraltar, and how I would hope a lot of future holiday makers will see it. FLIGHTS TO GET ...
...HOTEL ACCOMMODATION Here Gibraltar has a diversity of choice. From self catering holidays to hostel accommodation, Gibraltar is spoilt for choice, although for the average family holiday, I would recommend the Caleta Hotel because it gives you the best of two worlds. This is a large hotel overlooking Catalan Bay which is more used by locals than the other beaches and gives you a real taste of Gibraltar, whilst being away from the hustle and bustle ...

All those queues - must be Britain

Advantages: The Rock is fascinating, amazing views and scenery, cute baby apes!
Disadvantages: Long queues at the border, the town is not that nice

...on a day trip to Gibraltar whilst on holiday in Marbella (see my Costa del Sol opinion for information about Marbella itself!) I had heard a lot about Gibraltar and was intrigued to find out what it was like. For those who don’t know, Gibraltar is a tiny settlement which is actually part of Britain, however, it is tacked on to the South of Spain on the Mediterranean Coast, (which could explain what it is doing listed under “Spain” on Ciao)! It was ...
...the airport and much of Gibraltar itself are still owned by the military, however the Naval influence is no longer as important as it once was. Gibraltar itself still causes squabbles between Spain and Britain. Many Spanish people feel that it should be made part of Spain, but the British, and more importantly the people of Gibraltar, do not feel that this should be the case. I was keen to visit Gibraltar, the idea of it being part of Britain, but ...

My home away from home

Advantages: Lovely people, lots of things to do, relaxed and friendly place, use pounds and speak English
Disadvantages: Not suitable for a group of young adults holiday

Gibraltar is one of my favourite holiday destinations and I have been going there almost every year since I was a toddler. I even lived out there for a couple of months when I was about 7 and I plan to move out there in the future and spend a few months working. My uncle married a Gibraltarian woman which is the main reason that we go out there so much to see her family but, even if I didn't have family out there, I would still have regular holidays ...
...the weekends the whole of Gibraltar is out. If you take a wander up some of the small side streets you'll find some more lovely little bars and pubs. The main beaches are Calatlan Bay, which is further away from town and so less packed, and Camp Bay and Little Bay are the bigger and more crowded beaches. There is a huge cheap market just across the border into La Linea, Spain (take a right and keep on walking once you've crossed the border). The ...

Marriage on the Rock(s)

Advantages: friendly, cheap, english speaking
Disadvantages: limited things to do

...wed, we finally married in Gibraltar in May this year. There were a number of reasons for this slightly unusual choice of locations. Most importantly:- - we wanted a civil ceremony - we wanted a small reception - we wanted it to be inexpensive but memorable The easiest solution was to have the wedding abroad - that way we could celebrate our marriage whilst at the same time, avoiding offending pals for not inviting them. We hit on the idea of Vegas ...
...of ye olde British Empire, Gibraltar remains a thorn in the side of both the Spanish and the British governments. One won't give it up and the other just won't give in. For us though, it was the perfect solution: still under British rule but far enough away from the UK to feel like it was abroad! PROCEDURES It is a very simple process for UK citizens to get married in Gibraltar. We booked a civil marriage ceremony 4 months in advance of the date ...

Ape eulogy for an uninteresting week end

Advantages: the rock and the apes, centre, botanic gardens
Disadvantages: cost of hotels, city,

I went to Gibraltar for a week-end while on holiday in Spain (in March). I went by bus from Cadiz, as Gibraltar is not far (even afoot) from the Linea bus station. For lone travellers, going to Gibraltar isn't a problem, it is travelling inside Gibraltar which is actually more problematic. If you travel with at least another person you may want to rent a car (plus that would be useful to visit the surrrounding Andalucia)as it would make your life ...
...is more expensive inside of Gibraltar than in the Linea. I was at the Cannon Hotel (Gibraltar), in the centre. A nice little hotel and an amazing British breakfast (this latest being worth the price of the room by itself). The hotel is built in spanish style, meaning that the inside of the building is open. Given that few rooms are en-suite, plan on dressing up warmly to go the bath (at least in winter). Since the hotel is close to bars and restaurants ...

APES ARE MANS BEST FRIEND

Advantages: The Apes
Disadvantages: None

...me and my niece to Gibraltar for the day. It is about an hour and a half drive from where she lives. On finding somewhere to park the car for the day, I could see immediately the reason why Gibraltar was so popular. Just looking around you could see the beauty of this land! As we wandered around, even in October, it was busy. Very busy. The hustle and bustle of the streets left you no time to think. We had no intention to begin with on going up ...
...the Euro. Of course, Gibraltar is now shared with Spain and England. Dotted around Gibraltar you can see the history. There's a statue of a guard sitting in a glass container in a wall, with an explanation of who he is. It's a lovely Country. Small, but nice. There's loads of shops, loads of restaurants and loads of monkeys! If you make your own way to the top, you do have to pay to get into the reserve and in the cave. I'm not sure how much this ...

Gibraltar and the secret way on the rock

Advantages: Nice east secret path, good views, spectacular nature
Disadvantages: Many people on the main road to the top

...take petrol before entering gibraltar. Gibraltar is not spacefull and therefore you can see a weird airport made in the world war. It is on the only flatland and the main road to city is crossing it. So there are gates like on the railway being down when some plane is landing or taking off. It takes some time to take off so be patient if there is a jam it is surely because of the airport. When you got with your car to the entrance on the rock you ...

A Reflection on the Straits of Gibraltar

Advantages: Speak English and use the pound - worth seeing just for the Rock and dolphins
Disadvantages: Not a lot more to do

...year, now, since we visited Gibraltar for a holiday. I have been asked to write a review but have just never got round to it before. We had never visited Gibraltar before and only chose it for the following reasons, English is their native tongue (neither of us speaks Spanish), they use Pounds Sterling as their currency, we were looking for somewhere warm (but not your typical Spanish beach holiday) but mostly because it was “a bit different”. ...

And they speak English too!!!

Advantages: cheap goods, warmth, friendly locals, food
Disadvantages: waiting for the buses, heat can be oppressive

Gibraltar has to be one of the best destinations in Europe, it is warm, they speak English and you can get almost any type of food you desire there. They even have a Tescos. The shopping is fantastic and there is a full range of duty free alcohol, cigarettes and perfume as well as chocolate and gifts all at rock bottom prices, excuse the pun!!! There are plenty of things to do while on the rock, you can visit the upper rock nature reserve by cable ...

Gibraltar

Advantages: Lots to see and do in the day
Disadvantages: Quiet at night

Gibraltar is a Great place to visit for a day or two. Plenty of Historic sights and attractions, a couple of beaches and two lovely marina`s. As you enter through the city walls you really feel like you are entering another world. And considering how grotty the Spanish side is, it is a relief. The Main street is bustling, nice buildings, and very neat and tidy. Packed with duty free shops. Make a point of stopping for a drink at Queensway quay ...

If you want English stuff, go to England

Advantages: none
Disadvantages: tacky

I recently visited Gibraltar so see some family members. I think is place is less interesting than it used to be. One of the usual selling point is that Gibraltar is like Britain but with better whether. There are a few UK shops such a Safeway and Marks & Spencer. However, I think the place has developed into a bit of a theme park. It is worth visiting Gibraltar for cheap duty free goods. However, keep in mind that the use of Sterling there means ...
