Advantages Advantages Life changing trip, fantastic company, excellent people

    Disadvantages Disadvantages none

I have recently returned from the Wildlife conservation and Community Development Expedition with GVI in the Ecuadorian Amazon and I can honestly say it was one of the best experiences of my life. The whole trip was very well organised by GVI and as a new volunteer on the expedition you really have very little to worry about in terms of logistics. The filed staff were all very outgoing and made us feel welcome, on top of this they were extremely knowledgeable about the environment and their fields of expertise. The first night was spent in Tena, which is a jungle town about half way to camp ... more

Advantages Advantages A way to get an indepth view of a foreign country with a support network and to make a difference

Disadvantages Disadvantages Airfare is extra and it can be really hard to say goodbye to those little kids

I think that I am in a unique position to comment on GVI, having just returned from 10 months of traveling and doing 3 GVI projects in a row. My aim was to take some time to see the world, immerse myself in cultures and to try and give something back to the world. My first project was "Teach English to Buddhist Novice Monks and Local Communities in Laos". The support here from both the GVI staff and the other volunteers was amazing. Living in a guest house with our own rooms gave the best of both worlds in that we were able to spend as little or as much time together as we each wanted. I went ... more

Advantages Advantages New skills; new friends; exciting travel experience; practicing Spanish; good, hard work!

Disadvantages Disadvantages Mold in the rainforest!

I'm 19 years old and decided to take a gap year before starting college. I've spent the past four months volunteering with Global Vision International in Ecuador: 5 weeks doing conservation work in the Ecuadorian Amazon, and 2.5 months teaching second grade in a largely indigenous community in northern Ecuador. I couldn't have asked for a more fulfilling time. The projects I was doing were vastly different even though they were relatively close geographically; in the Amazon I got hands-on experience doing the legwork of conservation research, and on the teaching project I did I contributed to ... more

Advantages Advantages Food, Accommodation, Friendly Orphanage staff

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Living alone

In January I volunteered in Latvia for 4 weeks, at an orphanage. It was an awesome experience! Coming from North Queensland, Australia and going into a European winter was very exciting! Apparently it was the worst winter in 30 years, so the staff thought it was hilarious that an Aussie was amongst it. The support from the GVI staff was wonderful, and they answered all my questions thoroughly and quickly. I got a call a few days before I left, which was great! Just to know that they hadn't forgotten I was going. As part of my volunteering I helped the children with their English homework ... more

5 Stars Sports Project in Nomzamo, Cape Town Review with images 19/08/2010

Advantages Advantages Chance to work with very enthusiastic children who are genuinely pleased to have your help

Disadvantages Disadvantages None that I found, however if you are very used to the luxuries of living at home it may be a shock

The 4 weeks I spent in Gordons Bay and working in Nomzamo were the most incredible, and eye-opening weeks of my life so far. From the minute I arrived I was made to feel welcome by GVI, the management and co-ordinators are all extremely friendly and welcoming. Any fears I had about going away to Africa for month were allayed the first day of arriving. The project is amazing, the work is done at ACJ Primary in Nomzamo township, and the kids are all so full of energy and eagerness to learn. The lessons were always extremely enjoyable, and the after-school sports clubs always had a good turn-out ... more

Advantages Advantages this is not a safari it's working in the field, the interaction is an amazing experience

    Disadvantages Disadvantages none

I recently traveled as a volunteer with GVI to Venetia in the Limpopo Province of South Africa. My role was to help collect and collate data for their research program. I can only describe my trip as a humbling experience. GVI were extremely helpful and provided me with an awful lot of information about where I was going, what to expect, even literature I could source to prepare myself for my adventure. When I arrived in South Africa I realised nothing could prepare me for this trip of a lifetime. Driving in the front gate of the reserve for the first time an elephant greeted us not more than ... more

Advantages Advantages The Teaching, Being able to be in a small community and see the real Thailand

Disadvantages Disadvantages The Information given about Visa's could have been clearer.

I went to Ao Luk, Krabi in Thailand for 10 weeks to Teach English. When I decided to go travelling the hardest part was finding an organisation which I trusted. It was my first time travelling alone so I was incredibly nervous. The GVI team were great they made me feel comfortable from the moment I arrived on base and planned all sorts of activities which meant that as a group we were able to get to know one another quickly and start to feel comfortable about where we were and who we were with. The base was comfortable and quickly began to feel at home and get in a routine. We were soon pushed ... more

Hello I am Laura, 20 years old and from Scotland. I was in Pez Maya, Mexico for 5 weeks during the summer of 2010. It was one of the best experiences of my life! I wish I had stayed for the 10 weeks as it would have been so worth it. The GVI staff were so welcoming and helpful. Arriving at Pez Maya was slightly daunting as it was my first time properly away from home on my own. I met some really cool people who were also volunteering and we are all keeping in touch via facebook. The living conditions were basic but it was all you needed. The whole experience opened my eyes up to knowing how ... more

Advantages Advantages Helping others, learning about different cultures, self growth

Disadvantages Disadvantages Leaving the children behind

Throughout high school and college I was an active volunteer with Youth Against Cancer. I helped to raise awareness in the teen community as well as raise funds for the organization through different activities. Once I started my career volunteering started to fall off for me and then the disaster in Haiti occurred. The earthquake gave me the boost I needed to start getting active and help people less fortunate than me. I had always wanted to volunteer with underprivileged youth in a sports scenario so I started to do online research and came to the company GVI. I started to read through their ... more

Advantages Advantages Dive training and monitoring included. Meet new people. Gain lots of environmental knowledge

Disadvantages Disadvantages Quite costly, flights not included, need to purchase extra dive gear

This review covers my entire experience with GVI so far, from investigation right through to completing 3 months at the beginning of this year doing marine conservation at Pez Maya in Mexico. I first heard about GVI through a friend who had previously been on a community project and if I was keen to do some volunteering then they thoroughly recommended GVI. I then found their website (www.gvi.co.uk) and began my research. The webiste itself is extremely useful. It contains relavent information about each project or expedition, photos, blogs of current projects and ways of getting in touch with ... more
