...a hotel - and the Golden Tulip in Zaandam really did live down to all my expectations.
===Why was I there?===
Oh I keep asking myself that. What fate sent me to such a god-forsaken down-market crappy Dutch hotel? On the plus side, it's only for one night but on the down side, surely somebody could have found something better than this. I work for a company that's in the midst of divorcing its separate parts in a messy but fairly civilised way. ... ...and certainly not at the Golden Tulip. Unless of course you enjoy staying in the middle of a building site.
===A Totally Irrelevant Aside===
My intention was to sit down and write about the Golden Temple in Amritsar but instead I tackled the Golden Tulip Hotel in Zaandam, Holland instead. Could the two be confused? Not in any way whatsoever - it's just a case of coincidence.

Advantages: In easy reach of town centre, staff very friendly & helpful, Clean Disadvantages: Surrounding area a bit industrial
...then i came across the Golden Tulip in Zanndam. Although it is not in the city centre it is so easy to get there from this lovely hotel it's worth the extra journey to stay in a much nicer hotel. The train station is right next to the hotel (although there is no noise) and it is only 2-3 Euros return. We used to go out in the morning, come back late afternoon and then head back out in the evening and never found it a problem catching the train. It ... ...airport to the hotel.
The staff at the hotel are lovely and the room very clean and in a very nice condition. Because we saved so much money not staying in the city centre we were able to stay in a superior room which was lovely and included bath robes and slippers.
There are shops nearby and so we bought some water for the room, as the mini bar is very expensive.
