GNER's customer service has improved a lot since my last comment last year. Trains are still late but at least they are deailing with complaints a lot more quickly. Shame my complaint to them last year still hasn't recieved a reply. I'll give up on that. 3 weeks ago I was stuck at DOncaster trains station with my 3 year old daughter when we got told that the train had been cancelled because it had hit someone. Disadvantages: Some trains are old and battered, delays are possible, double booked seats

...at £14 but was a great start to the day! Be warned though. First class has priority over standard in the restaurant, but this rarely applies. The buffet serves a cheaper alternative of warm bacon sandwiches (which are also nice). The electric trains which serve leeds, york, newcastle, edinburgh and glasgow are more shabby. Well today i ventured out to try a train journey as a wheelchair user. I'm planning a trip to Peterborough in August and wanted to see just how friendly trains in general were. I was greeted at the check out with a happy chappy who seemed to know all there was to know about wheelchair acess. If he could have done the trip for me i'm sure he would have! We made our way to Edinburgh having been put on the train at the wrong end. Never fear though ... Read review

Disadvantages: Restricted to certain tickets, pricey

As a regular user of the GNER east coast main line between York and London I was very pleased to find out that you can upgrade to first class at weekends. You have to pay £11 per journey for the priveledge but it is worth it. More leg room, more comfortable seats, quieter surroundings and best of all - unlimited coffee. As a West Ham fan moving to Yorkshire I found myself in a quandry when I moved. How would I still make it to London for home games without breaking the bank. GNER have an answer by the name of the "DAYPEX". Basically by booking before 5pm the next day you can get a return from York to London for £23. It's normally £56. Having previously travelled to and from London by train, I was pretty happy with the service. Recently, near the end of August, I decided to travel back from London to Newcastle by train. I was planning a trip to London with a friend, and considering we were travelling from Glasgow, we understandably wanted to be comfortable for the journey. Great North Eastern railways are one rail company that can hold their heads up high during this nightmare time for Britain's railways . They at least have reached a level of quality and reliability normally that most other operators can only dream of . I travel on their flagship east coast main line regularly between Newcastle and York and I'm generally impressed. The trains are clean , quick and have generally an inviting atmosphere on board ... I recently went on a trip to London to do a bit of shopping. I usually hate traverling by train because they are not very well looked after and the feeling of insercurity is always with you. However traverling with GNER was the complete oppersite it was a joy to ride as the train was comfortable and homely. It was almost like been at home except hurtling down the east coast. I am a student living in Edinburgh, however I originally come from Yorkshire and travel back on a regular basis. I have found the train service from GNER to be excellent and will try to convey what I like, and also dislike about the service. One of the advantages of being a student is the student railcard. I recently travelled from Kings Cross to Leeds with GNER on a late evening train(2nd Dec 2006), and i upgraded from standerd to first for less than 20 pounds!! which i thought was excellent. it was a nice pleasent journey with free tea,coffee a news paper to read, internet access,power points for my dvd player, a large and extensive range of hot and cold sandwhiches ,beer ,wine and spirits at pretty ok prices served to your seat by nice pleasent ...
