Choo Choo
Review of Great North Eastern Railway by
Rach_79
Advantages: Quick and comfortable
Disadvantages: punctuality
I use the train everyday to get to work and they are a pain in the backside to be honest.
As i work for a political Party i have to travel to London quite a lot for conferences/seminars and other meetings and i use GNER as they are more reliable than Virgin Trains however they are often delayed and cancelled.
The staff at GNER are really friendly and helpful although i do get annoyed when i am travelling to London and having pre-booked my seat ...

Let the Train take the Strain
Review of Great North Eastern Railway by
helencbradshaw
Advantages: Most Direct route I could obtain
Disadvantages: High Price, Long journey, substantial risk of delay
I found myself, at short notice, having to travel from Glasgow to Peterborough for a Residential school with the OU. I called National rail enquiries and was given a long convoluted journey with a couple of stops, and a fare of about £60. Although expensive, this was probably equivalent to the cost of car fuel, and at least I could work on the way, I justified to myself. So I rang GNER to book. Long, long delay on answering machine. (Better to press ...

chug a chug, chug a chug
Review of Great North Eastern Railway by
chachaqueen
Advantages: Clean, punctual and helpful staff
Disadvantages: expensive food
I have to admit, I am very nervous about travelling on trains. Not because of risk of accidents, because I don't trust them to get me anywhere on time! Before I bought my car, if I needed to travel long distance I went by train, and only 20% of the time were the trains on time. You can see why I have this fear!
When there were train problems at Christmas the other year, I booked a coach instead, as I couldn't face the stress. Even though our coach ...

Could it get worse
Review of Great North Eastern Railway by
DeanLambert
Advantages: Train speeds can be good.
Disadvantages: None
GNER's customer service has improved a lot since my last comment last year. Trains are still late but at least they are deailing with complaints a lot more quickly. Shame my complaint to them last year still hasn't recieved a reply. I'll give up on that.
3 weeks ago I was stuck at DOncaster trains station with my 3 year old daughter when we got told that the train had been cancelled because it had hit someone.
Now after sending my tickets back ...

GNER - MIXED REACTION
Review of Great North Eastern Railway by
laverack2
Advantages: Fast, comfortable and mostly reliable
Disadvantages: Some trains are old and battered, delays are possible, double booked seats
...at £14 but was a great start to the day! Be warned though. First class has priority over standard in the restaurant, but this rarely applies. The buffet serves a cheaper alternative of warm bacon sandwiches (which are also nice). The electric trains which serve leeds, york, newcastle, edinburgh and glasgow are more shabby. The seats are coming apart at the seams in places and are quite rigid. The leg-room is tight and the decor is more 70's style. ...

Privatisation Did It No Good
Review of Great North Eastern Railway by
monkfeesh
Advantages: Best of a bad bunch
Disadvantages: Stil, not that brilliant in the long run
...Better Than British Rail').
- Great North Eastern Railway (GNER) Background (from my own personal research!) -
When British Rail was privatised (and no, at the age of 14 I have no idea exactly what privatisation is, nor should I even need to know, except that British Rail ceased to be owned by the government and split of into many privately run sectors, to put it sinply) There is a general belief that the railways were perfect before privatisation. ...

Disabled Acess!
Review of Great North Eastern Railway by
Rhona
Advantages: Met at the station adn accommpanied if nes.
Disadvantages: Fidiling with ramps/luggage can be annoying.
Well today i ventured out to try a train journey as a wheelchair user.
I'm planning a trip to Peterborough in August and wanted to see just how friendly trains in general were.
I was greeted at the check out with a happy chappy who seemed to know all there was to know about wheelchair acess. If he could have done the trip for me i'm sure he would have!
We made our way to Edinburgh having been put on the train at the wrong end. Never fear though ...

Travel in style
Review of Great North Eastern Railway by
ianhep
Advantages: Top treatment on a train
Disadvantages: Restricted to certain tickets, pricey
As a regular user of the GNER east coast main line between York and London I was very pleased to find out that you can upgrade to first class at weekends. You have to pay £11 per journey for the priveledge but it is worth it. More leg room, more comfortable seats, quieter surroundings and best of all - unlimited coffee.
You can only use weekend first with certain tickets but it is worth the extra expense. My only quibble is that the fee recently ...

Worth the hassle?
Review of Great North Eastern Railway by
ianhep
Advantages: Save money
Disadvantages: Costly of you miss your train
As a West Ham fan moving to Yorkshire I found myself in a quandry when I moved. How would I still make it to London for home games without breaking the bank. GNER have an answer by the name of the "DAYPEX".
Basically by booking before 5pm the next day you can get a return from York to London for £23. It's normally £56. This sounds all very nice but there are restrictions, some of which make you wonder if it is worth bothering trying to save money.
You ...

Was it just a bad day?
Review of Great North Eastern Railway by
philltam
Advantages: Usually a good service!
Disadvantages: Possible delays!!
Having previously travelled to and from London by train, I was pretty happy with the service.
Recently, near the end of August, I decided to travel back from London to Newcastle by train. Having travelled for 13 hours from Canada to London Gatwick, I thought the train ride back to Newcastle would be quick and relaxing! How wrong I was. It's was just one problem after another! Firstly, the engine failed, so it had to be swopped with another one, ...

Glasgow to London with GNER
Review of Great North Eastern Railway by
Guru-On-A-Mountain
Advantages: Fast and Efficient service
Disadvantages: Rather crampt and can be expensive
I was planning a trip to London with a friend, and considering we were travelling from Glasgow, we understandably wanted to be comfortable for the journey. Unfortunately, we were also students and didn't have a lot to spend on transport.
It is easy to get cheap flights, but my friend didn't want to fly, and we were left with choosing between travelling on a bus or a train.
The train was our preferred mode of transport, but the tickets seemed ...

GNER an example to all other rail companies
Review of Great North Eastern Railway by
Gardenex
Advantages: clean , fast , reliable
Disadvantages: overcrowding is getting worse
Great North Eastern railways are one rail company that can hold their heads up high during this nightmare time for Britain's railways .
They at least have reached a level of quality and reliability normally that most other operators can only dream of .
I travel on their flagship east coast main line regularly between Newcastle and York and I'm generally impressed.
The trains are clean , quick and have generally an inviting atmosphere on board ...

How good are GNER?
Review of Great North Eastern Railway by
aaronlethem
Advantages: Clean, homely, quick and cheap.
Disadvantages: The buffet car could be better stocked
I recently went on a trip to London to do a bit of shopping. I usually hate traverling by train because they are not very well looked after and the feeling of insercurity is always with you. However traverling with GNER was the complete oppersite it was a joy to ride as the train was comfortable and homely. It was almost like been at home except hurtling down the east coast. It was very smooth and got us to the capital very quickerly. I expected the ...

Trains: A break from the road
Review of Great North Eastern Railway by
t0m101
Advantages: Reliable, quick, reasonable when booking early.
Disadvantages: Have to book in advance to avoid being charged high prices
I am a student living in Edinburgh, however I originally come from Yorkshire and travel back on a regular basis. I have found the train service from GNER to be excellent and will try to convey what I like, and also dislike about the service.
One of the advantages of being a student is the student railcard. I obtained my railcard free of charge from my bank and it is valid unitl 2007. The card offers 34% discount on all travel and gives real value ...
