Top Italian restaurant

Advantages: Good food and atmosphere
Disadvantages: You need to book well in advance

When we were booking for our recent stay in Edinburgh, for the marathon, we decided to book a meal for the night before the race rather than eating in the Travelodge where we were staying. Not really knowing Edinburgh very well or where to eat out in Edinburgh, I let my wife do the organising, with my one request being that it could be somewhere that I could fill myself up with pasta to fuel myself for the marathon. She booked Guilianos Italian ...
...before on trips to Edinburgh with her friends. We phoned to book this restaurant weeks before we were due to go to Edinburgh, as my wife had struggled on a previous occasion to get a booking when phoning a week or two before going. One of the reasons that you need to book this restaurant so far in advance is that the location is directly across the street from the Edinburgh Playhouse, so there are a huge amount of people booking for pre-theatre ...

A Little Slice of Italian Hospitality

Advantages: A rare kind of service
Disadvantages: Decor

Mr Guiliano as he's known to his friends is a local Italian businessman who runs his own very special restaurants. My expereince is with the Guiliano's at the top of Leith Walk opposite The Edinburgh Playhouse. For that reason it is the number one choice for theatre go-ers and can get very busy on show nights (especially at weekends). Should you manage to secure a table, first impressions may be tainted by the decor which is in need of either some ...
...will soon be over-looked as you are presented with a fantastic menu in both wine and food. You should keep in mind that your menu is being cooked by mainly an Italian workforce and uses some rather unique and delicious recipies. It adds to the expereince! Your service will be of the highest standard; welcoming, warming and somewhat of an adventure in itself! You may even eat alongside many performers at The Edinburgh Playhouse, who often chose ...

Best Italian in Edinburgh...

Advantages: entertaining evening
Disadvantages: need to book in advance

Guilianos is situated directly opposite the Playhouse theatre making it a perfect restaurant for a pre-theatre meal. Hence it is always busy, although not only for that reason. You don't go to Guilianos just to eat, but also for the entertainment! All the waiters are Italian, friendly and the place is bustling and packed at the weekend with friends meeting and families having parties. Expect the lights to go off randomly while cakes are paraded through ...
...is deceptive - from the front it looks as though there are only about 20 tables - once you get inside you realise the restaurant stretches back and around the corner for a long way, seating perhaps 150 easily in the whole place. Choose from typical Italian starters like Ciabatta or garlic bread, or opt for something a little more adventurous - main course pastas range from 6-10 pounds, as do pizzas, which are crisp and tasty. Everything tastes fresh ...

Dissapointing

Advantages: good food,
Disadvantages: bad booking system, unfriendly staff

I'd heard a lot about Guilianos and had read many positive reviews however I was disappointed. My girlfriend and I decided to go there after her sister recommended it. It was the middle of the Edinburgh festival so I wasn't sure if we'd get a table but we did. I booked a table for 7pm on their online booking system but when we turned up at the restaurant at 7 we were told we'd have to wait a few minutes for our table. A few minutes turned into 15 ...
...get seated straight away. We were taken to a table with no cutlery or glasses or anything. We were then left another 15 minutes before we were even asked if we'd like any drinks. We'd been looking at the menu for half an hour so we of course knew what we wanted. The staff did not seem interested in us at all and we had to really fight for their attention as they seemed to be only watching the large party of 20 they had in. On the positive side both ...

Good, but not great. Bad, but not terrible

Advantages: Location for playhouse, shopping and cinema
Disadvantages: We were still hungry after spending alot of money

Myself and a few friends booked a table here for dinner, before a show at the playhouse. The loacation for this was perfect. Tables were far too close together. The table next to ours must have been fat clubs christmas night out. I didnt have an inch to move and could hear every word they said! The prices were good for a city centre restaurant (or so I thought!) Portions were tiny! I had the steak and thats exactly what it was, simply a small ...
...a side plate. Not filling at all! very nicely cooked though! Deserts were resonably priced. I had the raspberry pavlova, which was great and worth more than I paid! The attitude of the staff were a bit varried. the Scottish waiters were friendly and we had a laugh with them, but the Italian guy who brought us the bill was quite rude and didnt say a word to us. The manager who was walking around meeting and greeting was very friendly however! I ...
