Last May I stayed in Hamburg for 24 hours, my train arrived at 3 pm and I left the following day at about the same time. Can one get a more than superficial impression of such a big city, the second largest German city (~ 1,8 million inhabitants) after Berlin, in such a short time? I think so, after all tourists are only interested in the city centre, who'd want to visit the suburbs, which are more or less the same everywhere in the world anyway? ... ...Information there and buy a Hamburg Card. Last year it cost 8 €, I cherish it not only for the possibility of saving money on tickets when going hither and thither by U-Bahn, S-Bahn (kind of tubes) or bus and on entrance fees but also for the fact that with it I’m not in danger of losing face in front of a ticket automat which invariably wins against me, I only get out a ticket if someone helps me.

Advantages: Somewhere to practice my Deutsch Disadvantages: Attitude; Attractions (or lack thereof)
...to a flying start in Hamburg when less than half an hour after landing and €20 lighter we found ourselves a our hotel. Hamburg has a whole bunch of hotels and guest houses but we only stayed at one, the Radisson, and it was ok. Expedia and Opodo have good choices if you're choosing to book online (which, when you think about it, really is the only way to do it).
We spent 4 days in the city at the beginning of December, specifically timed to take ... ...Manchester).
We went to Hamburg first and foremost to go Christmas market shopping, but having a new city at our feet for a long weekend meant we also had to explore. I wanted to go 'regular' shopping (books, clothes, chocolate etc) so one morning we headed over to the Main station which is at one end of the two principal shopping streets. Here we found everything from H&M to Douglas, C&A (still going strong on the continent), Karstadt, Thalia, ...

Advantages: many Sights, much fun -> Nightlife Disadvantages: many crime
...that I am german and Hamburg is my hometown so I will write something about it. I love my hometown more than any other city in the world although is never almost so good as for example London. But I think so and many people call Hamburg as the most beautiful city in Germany and not Berlin. Berlin is besides the shopping a really dirty city.
Hamburg has many sights to see. I will give you some examples:
->the Reeperbahn: The big amusement mile in ... ...the harbour: The port of Hamburg is the third biggest free port worldwide lying next to the Elbe. You can visit there amount of ships, museums, the "Speicherstadt" (Entrepôt city) and you can do many different conducted boat tours of the harbour. -> the city: You can go shopping in the "Mönckebergstrasse" and the "Spitalerstrasse" and at the "Gänsemarkt". Advantages: Buzzing, interesting, friendly and vibrant city. Disadvantages: Some areas deprived and dirty with quite a few beggars.
Arrived central Hamburg tourist information looking for a hotel for two nights (it was 3pm and the city was in the middle of a huge Disco/music fest attracting 350,000 people). Staff at info centre were wonderful, despite being incredibly busy. We were booked into the Crowne Plaza at an amazing rate of 400DM for two people b+b in a double room (last minute rate)for the two nights.
HOTEL- Great reception, very clean and immaculate decor. Room very ... ...Very reliable and reasonably priced.
HAMBURG - Stayed in hotel for evening meal - totally beautiful eating experience. Early start and taxi to FISH MARKET (down at the port 5am - 10am). I could not belive it was so early on a Sunday morning. The atmosphere was electric..bands playing, bars open, thousands of stalls selling everything from crafts to fish.REEPERBAHN - could definatly give Amsterdam a run for it,s money on the red light front!

Advantages: "Reeperbahn"!!, "Mönckebergstrasse", "Volksparkstadion", "Hamburg Harbour", "Michel" etc. Disadvantages: Nothing!!!
...The most famous sight of Hamburg is doubtless the Reeperbahn or St.Pauli, where the nightlife in the numerous nightclubs("Bordelle") or Discos is the best in whole Germany. You can reach St.Pauli by travelling with the subway or by car.
My personal most likely sight is the "Volksparkstadion Hamburg" the football stadium of the most liked football club of Hamburg! Every real football-fan has to see this fabulous stadium, which takes 55000 spectators.
... ...for fish (and other things) in the world.
This are only some of the very many sights of Hamburg City and I hope you will like Hamburg like I do! And I also hope my opinion will help you with your choice for the location for your next vacation! ...

But Hamburg has another site !
In Hamburg yoú will find the Alster. I´m not sure if it´s a river or not.
We also have great shopping miles. For example in the central of the city. The Mönkebergstraße and the Gänsemarkt are the most visited shopping miles in Hamburg.

I live in Hamburg and study meteorology since three years. In my opinion I live in the most interesting and exciting city in Germany.
With 1.7 Million inhabitants it is the secound biggest city in Germany.
It is in the north part of Germany and it is famous for the port. It is one of the biggest ports in Europe.
A lot of people say that it is the port witch gives Hamburg the special atmosphere. I can only agree. If your are in the nightlife ... ...like it.
But in Hamburg there is much more. Also famous is the Reeperbahn. It is famous for all the erotic shops but here are also the main attractions of the Hamburger nightlife. In this area are pubs, bars, restaurants, theaters, discos so densely concentrated like no where else.
For every visitor this place is a must.
Hamburg is much more alternativ than any other city in Germany. Politically it is far on the left.

Never having been to Hamburg I thought the offer of a cheap weekend visit was one not to be missed. The visit, therefore was one for pleasure as oppsed to business. It was also during daylight hours and not when tyhe fun starts, or does it?
The city centre is not far from the port area which is hardly surprising since it was built specifically as a sea port for Germany. I suppose it must be the furtherest seaport from a sea that there is. (how clumsily ... ...the centre in good time is, however, a bit of a lottery because there are numerous demonstrations which, because of a clamp down on media coverage, are known only to the demonstrators. What also happens is that the police block the entrance to the centre and thereby the demonstrators and, of course, just about anybody else.
The city? Well it is so new it is practically boring. The most interesting thing I could find, apart from art galleries, was ...

Advantages: Great transport, young, livley city. Disadvantages: Loads to do, but no landmarks, nothing which Hamburg is known for
...is about an hour from Hamburg City Center. Like most Ryanair flights, do not take the ryanair bus from the airport to the city, take the train. You can save yourself about 50€ by doing this. There is a regular bus from the airport to Lubeck Station, where there are frequent trains to Hamburg Hauptbahnhof. Getting round Hamburg is incredibly easy on th U-bahn and S-Bahn. The trains are comfortable, quick and conveniant running very frequently and ... ...rooms and models the alps, Hamburg and the German countryside, and a newly opened section which looked like the Rocky Mountains (as it was being constructed at my time of visit). The railway is so huge that they an putn eveything from a muder scene to two people having it off behind a bush. The only con of this place is the crowds, but you get free refreshments in the q. Hamburg as a city is often sadly overlooked by people, who pass throguh it en route to somewhere else. The city is vibrant, clean, and with a great deal happening in it. There are countless bars for the young, and the shopping is amongst teh best in Germany. Away from the centre, it is possible to be out in the countryside in under 40 minutes, with the Lüneburger Heide to the south and the delights of Schleswig-Holstein to the North. Mönckebergstrasse ... ...even 1st and 2nd class! For a great view head up the Fernsehturm (TV Tower), and for great food there are some great restaurants at varying price tags. For onwards travel the trains are excellent with a very good overnight ICN service to Munich.
I would recommend Hamburg thoroughly. ...

Wall Street is a great bar for young people, serving a wide range of cocktails, with the added bonus that when you settle up for the night the price crash (their equivalent of the Happy Hour) will bring the price down slightly. By how much no-one knows until they get teh bill, however of a good night cocktails can become a snip at about 4-5 marks for a generous serving.
