Advantages Advantages a lot to see

Disadvantages Disadvantages couldn't find any in one day

On a trip to the north of German I made a stopover in Hannover. I arrived mid-morning, left my luggage in a locker and went out onto the Ernst-August-Platz (Platz = square) in front of the Central Station with the enormous statue of King Ernst August (1771-1851, the fifth son and eighth child of George III and Queen Victoria's uncle) on horseback. The spot under the horse's tail is a famous meeting point for the Hannoveraners. A glance back at the station is worthwhile. It's a pompous and imposing building in the Neo-Renaissance style. When it was rebuilt after the bomb raids in 1943, it was ... more

5 Stars Hannover - where the art is Review with images 19/08/2008

Advantages Advantages Lots to see and do, great public art, good value

Disadvantages Disadvantages I didn't stay long enough

Although I am enthusiastic recycler and cyclist, I will be the first to admit that I contribute to more than my fare share of airplane emissions. I know I should unsubscribe to all the airline mailing lists that land in my inbox but I just can't find the willpower to do that. Every time a new one arrives I have to click through to find out what bargains I might be missing and this is how we found ourselves booking flights to the city of Hannover with the German airline TUI fly. Digging out the Lonely Planet guide to Germany I wasn't much enlightened - lots of concrete, some fine museums ... more

Advantages Advantages Good way to spend your money, Not too crowded

Disadvantages Disadvantages Expensive, many unimpressive exhibits, internal transportation inadequate

Way back in 1967 when I was at the tender age of 10, my family went to Montreal for a vacation and we spent most of our time at Expo '67. That was one vacation I'll never forget. So, despite some of the negative reviews I'd read about Expo2000, when I got the chance to go to Germany recently, I couldn't pass up the opportunity. Unfortunately, I wasn't all that pleased with what I found there. Granted, I was comparing Expo2000 (under the cynical eye of an adult) to Expo '67 (which I experienced with a child's innocence) and perhaps this clouded my opinion. Still, my own 15 year old son seemed ... more

    Advantages Advantages Quaint

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Not much happening

Hannover is a great place in Germany, we stayed near there for about a week. I must say the scenery and weather is pretty much the same as in England with endless rain. Hannover has a great market for all of those shopaholics, or those who love a good hearty barter with the owners. There are also a good few restaurants, who have expert chefs. I really advise you to go to a Konditorei if you go to Germany, it is just a really old fashioned cake shop or tea room, which is great for breaking your diet! ... more

    Advantages Advantages A not-to-be-missed event.

Disadvantages Disadvantages Too massive to see it all

Hannover is hosting Expo 2000 from June until October, and has made this small, attractive city a 'must visit' for anyone visiting Germany this year. The Expo is being held in the existing Messe (fairgrounds) on the outskirts of the city, easily reached by train, tram, bus, bike, or car. We chose to take the train to Hannover, and stayed at Hotel Atlanta, a great hotel in a quiet side-street near the train station. Admission to the Expo is not cheap at 69DM a day, but includes all public transportation, so arriving is simple. The grounds are open from 9am until midnight, with the pavilions ... more

Advantages Advantages Big city feel, plenty to see and do

Disadvantages Disadvantages Overuse of concrete when rebuilding the city centre gives it a very grey feel in winter

I lived in Hannover for my year abroad during my German couse at university, and found it a great place to live. Since my time there (96-97) the city has been spruced up a great deal as the EXPO has come to town, but essentially it still offers a surprising amount for the casual traveller to enjoy. There is a large shopping centre, stretching from the Hauptbahnhof, round Kröpcke square and down to the remnants of the old town (Hannover was severely affected in the Allied air raids during WW2 but part of the Altstadt was painstakingly rebuilt), and the old town in particular offers many a bar ... more

Advantages Advantages Big exposition and easy access by train

Disadvantages Disadvantages Need more hotel rooms

When we speak about Hannover, the first thing that came into the mind is the exposition center. Well, what can I say, that is the main thing in Hannover. If anyone want to visit the expo and plan to stay in Hannover, they have to make sure they make the boking 3-4 months in advance. When I was there during the easter, I couldn't even find myself a room, not even in Hamburg. Once you settle the accomodation, you will have no worry. There are a variety of food there and is reasonable as well. Even in the Messe, the food are reasonable. Transportation to the fair is easy access from anywhere in ... more

Hanover (English spelling) is an awesome twon. first of all you will not be able to avoid going to Hanover. if you go on a train anywhere in northern germany they all seem to go through there, but make sure you stop off and go beyond the recently rebuil;t train station. the town is not renowned for its beauty, but it is till not ugly. there are some beautiful parks and one lake next to the footbal ground which is breathtaking (unfortunately hitler designed it). there are excellent shopping facilities and because of the high student population the nightlife is great (paolo paolo being a great ... more

Advantages Advantages a little unknown " gem" of Germany

Disadvantages Disadvantages none of the low cost airlines fly from anywhere in the Uk to Hannover

Hannover has lots to offer and you are guaranteed to find something for everyone. On arrival at Langenhagen airport the S-Bahn is the best way to get into the centre of town. The exhibition centre (Messe) plays host to some of the world largest exhibitions such as CEBIT ( computers etc), then there is Hannover Zoo which is a great day out for any animal lover. Fancy a a boat ride than head to the Maschsee. The easiest way to see the city other than just jumping on a tram is the guided walkway around the city where you simply follow a red line this will take you past most of the sights as well ... more

    Advantages Advantages not many

Disadvantages Disadvantages Too expensive, too much multimedia

First of all I have to say that I am german and that I live near Hannover and of course I visited the Expo2000 for myself. But I was both, shocked and amazed about what I saw. The Expo was planned since 1990 (!) and it is still too expensive. To be honest: the creators of the Expo weren t able to plan this world exposition correctly although they had 10 years time. And Germany paid Millions of german marks and the german people who pay their taxes are very angry about this. They paid for the Expo too. And now ? What do we have ? The Expo didn t even reach the half of the expected visitors and ... more
