Advantages: Lots to see and do, great public art, good value Disadvantages: I didn't stay long enough
...flights to the city of Hannover with the German airline TUI fly.
Digging out the Lonely Planet guide to Germany I wasn't much enlightened - lots of concrete, some fine museums, beautiful and historic gardens. Hannover was heavily bombed during World War Two and, although the centre is dominated by a post-war concrete shopping centre, a section of the Old Town as well as some of the most interesting and attractive public buildings were rebuilt as ... ...German friends their opinions of Hannover and neither was very positive; I was determined to prove them wrong.
Our hotel was on the Klagesmarkt, a short walk from the heart of the city via the red light area (we never saw any prostitutes on the street but there are a good handful of strip joints and sex shops) and the Old Town. As it was early on Saturday morning we skipped the red light area and proceeded directly to the Old Town. The reconstruction ...

Advantages: Good way to spend your money, Not too crowded Disadvantages: Expensive, many unimpressive exhibits, internal transportation inadequate
Way back in 1967 when I was at the tender age of 10, my family went to Montreal for a vacation and we spent most of our time at Expo '67. That was one vacation I'll never forget. So, despite some of the negative reviews I'd read about Expo2000, when I got the chance to go to Germany recently, I couldn't pass up the opportunity. Unfortunately, I wasn't all that pleased with what I found there.
Granted, I was comparing Expo2000 (under the cynical ... ...with a child's innocence) and perhaps this clouded my opinion. Still, my own 15 year old son seemed to reinforce what I was feeling.
What struck me first was the large "hanger" type buildings where the smaller countries had their exhibitions. These were sterile on the outside and gave no indication to what was within. Since these were also very large, they seemed to dominate a large portion of the major part of the fairgrounds. This made taking ...

Advantages: Quaint Disadvantages: Not much happening
Hannover is a great place in Germany, we stayed near there for about a week. I must say the scenery and weather is pretty much the same as in England with endless rain. Hannover has a great market for all of those shopaholics, or those who love a good hearty barter with the owners. There are also a good few restaurants, who have expert chefs. I really advise you to go to a Konditorei if you go to Germany, it is just a really old fashioned cake shop ...

Advantages: A not-to-be-missed event. Disadvantages: Too massive to see it all
Hannover is hosting Expo 2000 from June until October, and has made this small, attractive city a 'must visit' for anyone visiting Germany this year. The Expo is being held in the existing Messe (fairgrounds) on the outskirts of the city, easily reached by train, tram, bus, bike, or car. We chose to take the train to Hannover, and stayed at Hotel Atlanta, a great hotel in a quiet side-street near the train station. Admission to the Expo is not cheap ... ...days to be rushed.
Hannover has obviously spent millions on freshening the city up, and it shows - the city is spotless, the streets felt totally safe, and the directions were well posted. The people were friendly and language was not as great a barrier as expected. For a first trip to Germany, it seemed to be the perfect destination. ...

Advantages: Big city feel, plenty to see and do Disadvantages: Overuse of concrete when rebuilding the city centre gives it a very grey feel in winter
I lived in Hannover for my year abroad during my German couse at university, and found it a great place to live. Since my time there (96-97) the city has been spruced up a great deal as the EXPO has come to town, but essentially it still offers a surprising amount for the casual traveller to enjoy. There is a large shopping centre, stretching from the Hauptbahnhof, round Kröpcke square and down to the remnants of the old town (Hannover was severely ... ...of the Altstadt was painstakingly rebuilt), and the old town in particular offers many a bar and restaurant where you can enjoy good food and drink. The town hall buildings and the Maschsee, a vast artificial lake that freezes solid in winter are well worth a visit, as are the Herrenhäuser Gardens to the north of the city centre. The old royal palace there was destroyed in the bombing but the ceremonial gardens and fountains remain and are in good ...

Hanover (English spelling) is an awesome twon. first of all you will not be able to avoid going to Hanover. if you go on a train anywhere in northern germany they all seem to go through there, but make sure you stop off and go beyond the recently rebuil;t train station. the town is not renowned for its beauty, but it is till not ugly. there are some beautiful parks and one lake next to the footbal ground which is breathtaking (unfortunately hitler ... ...the high student population the nightlife is great (paolo paolo being a great club). hanover is quite a young place and a bustling town (even more so with the Expo 2000 taking place there - of which i have heard mixed reports), but you can escape into the nearby harz, an hour up to bremen or down to hamlin and hildesheim, so there is plenty of chance to get away. hanover is superbly placed. ...

Advantages: a little unknown " gem" of Germany Disadvantages: none of the low cost airlines fly from anywhere in the Uk to Hannover
Hannover has lots to offer and you are guaranteed to find something for everyone. On arrival at Langenhagen airport the S-Bahn is the best way to get into the centre of town. The exhibition centre (Messe) plays host to some of the world largest exhibitions such as CEBIT ( computers etc), then there is Hannover Zoo which is a great day out for any animal lover. Advantages: not many Disadvantages: Too expensive, too much multimedia
...and that I live near Hannover and of course I visited the Expo2000 for myself. But I was both, shocked and amazed about what I saw. The Expo was planned since 1990 (!) and it is still too expensive. To be honest: the creators of the Expo weren t able to plan this world exposition correctly although they had 10 years time. And Germany paid Millions of german marks and the german people who pay their taxes are very angry about this. They paid for the ... ...new just for the Expo: Hannover train station was completely renewed, the airports got safer, Hotels were renewed...and all this just for a good looking Germany ? I mean for Germany it is clever made. The Expo and all other things related to it were made more expensive because people have to stay longer. That is because the Expo is so large. You can t see everything in a few hours or on one single day, that s right. But on the other hand you will ...

this city is right in the middle of northern germany and virtually unavoidable for anyone who wants to travel by train in germany. it is not that pretty having been bombed a lot during the war but it is really lively and has a youthful and exuberant atmosphere. it is full of students and at the moment (july 2000) they have the european exhibition there EXPO 2000. this is apparently a little below par but still warrants a visit. there are loads of ...

Advantages: There´s no place in the world you can compare with this Disadvantages: A bit too expensive
Of course you have to see Expo 2000 in Hannover, Germany! Yes, it is expensive! Yes, it is full of fascinating multimedia-shows (Don´t miss the cinema in the UAR-pavillon!). Yes, you hardly can see a third of it on one day. Yes, you will be tired after a long, highly interesting day. Yes, you will want to go again. So, why not?
It is difficult to recommend any special location, everywhere you can find very interesting things or informations. But ... ...would like to say: The architecture of the new pavillons, the Epo-lift, the German show and the Scandinavian pavillons. My number one is the Finnish pavillon and what I really can recommend is a bag of pirakoita from the buffet at the Finnish pavillon together with a glass of beer from the Belgian pavillon right on the other side of the road.
But the best is: Come and see yourself! It will be one of the best days of your life! ...
