    Disadvantages Disadvantages Confusion over discount rates, high excess if you don't pay the waiver charge

    Some of you may know that I am a big fan of Europcar, having hired vehicles from them in the both the UK and overseas. However, on this occasion, BA’s discount rate was nowhere near that of the ThomsonFly Offers in the summer, and prices directly from their website were in the region of £250 for 6 days hire, so drastic action was needed. I have hired from Hertz rental twice in Lanzarote, once through Holiday Autos, and once through the rep in resort, and amazingly had the same car (I don’t mean the same model, I mean the same car) on both occasions without any problems.     Usually, when I fly to Belgium or Germany with Ryanair I rent a car from HERTZ. As a customer of Ryanair you are entitled to preferential rates but I don't go down that road. I don't hire directly from Hertz either but use a consolidator's website, which is: http://www.carhire4less.co.uk/ They will quote prices for Alamo, Budget, Europcar and Hertz and they are generally around 10-15% less expensive than any other source.     Finding myself stuck without a car last week and several appointments to keep, I decided to hire one double-quick. The first place that sprang to mind was Hertz, as they had opened a new place literally at the bottom of my street a couple of weeks previously. It was a Sunday night, and I wanted the car first thing next morning, so I went straight onto the Hertz website (www.hertz.co.uk) and booked.     When I travel I like to spend as little time as possible at the airport. Therefore when I get off of a plane I want to get in my rental car and on my way. I have tried many of the rental car companies in the US and Hertz seem to be the most efficient in getting me out and on my way. Hertz #1 Club Gold If you rent cars more than twice a year I suggest that you purchase a Hertz #1 Club Gold membership. For the price of £32 per year you can skip the check-in counter all together.     Where is my car? I had a reservation! I'll never rent from Hertz again...blah, blah, blah! I once got in trouble because a customer asked if I work for Hertz, and I said "NO!" Let's see, I have a Hertz cap, a Hertz jacket, and a Hertz shirt, and even as a walking billboard, people still ask that question. Then you get the people who are ticked off because something went wrong with their car and refuse to give you(the billboard) the key to their car!     When my fiancee's brother was getting married this year, the car we had at the time was on it's last legs so i decided i would hire a car for the weekend to make sure that we made the wedding which was about 45 miles from where we stay. Also i thought it would be a bit more comfort for us than turning up in our poor old V W Polo, especially with our wedding outfits and other bags with us.     We had booked our hire car through expedia.com. They had quoted for a compact car $33 (18 pounds 15 pence) per day including taxes, from Hertz. When we arrived at Jacksonville airport, we were running late, due to our flight. Jacksonville, North Carolina is such a small airport that we only had a few steps to the Hertz counter. There was no one behind the counter. We started to look around, and a young lady hurried towards us. I had my paperwork out, and she pulled up our details.     ***Update at bottom of Review****** I travel between Dublin and the UK on a regular basis and until recently used Avis for car hire to get me from the airport to my meetings.     Recently used Hertz for a car rental from Boston airport. The car was booked in this country and a fully inclusive (i.e. insurance, etc) was quoted. Upon arriving at Boston, we were told that the rate did not actually include insurance. To cut a long story short, we were forced to pay an extra 70% for insurances. We contacted Hertz in the UK several times for a refund. They agreed and said they would fax Boston airport to ensure it was done on drop-off. They 'forgot' to do it!     Booking online I always thought was the easy option, no waiting (on hold or in a queue) and you can dither as much as you like but that does in seem to be the case with the hertz web site. The site is as you might expect options for special offers etc. But it is Rates & Reservations we are interested in as we came here to book a car and part of Rates & Reservations will shop for best rate. The first page you get is when do you want the car and which country are you in and country you want to hire the car in, seem pretty good so far.
