I often find myself using Hertz rental cars for work and have found that the quality of service differs greatly according to the location from which you rent. My local office (small) are courteous and helpful, with cars well presented and brought straight to you. On the other hand, renting from airport locations is a thoroughly unpleasant experience! I have waited up to 30 minutes at peak times at Heathrow for their courtesy couch, then another 20 ... ...are OK, once you locate them in the vast carpark. As it is a business rental, I cannot comment on the value for money. They may not have the friendliest staff in the world, but how happy would you be working next to the main runway at Heathrow? I shouldn't complain, though, they didn't turn a hair when I returned a car considerably more scratched than I found it, and I didn't receive any of the expected hassle! Poor!
Big queue at Perpignan Airport to collect car - despite pre-booking on-line. As there is a Hertz link on the BMI Baby web-site this is to be expected - everyone on our flight used Hertz - whilst the desks at Europcar and Avis had no queues. If you fly BMI Baby - don't use Hertz is my advice!
Very expensive insurance if you want no excess - the car had plenty of scratches we could have been charged for if not.
Misleading - we were charged for fuel when we were verbally told at the airport we would not if we returned a full tank. Apparently it was all there in the agreement (in French). Only got a partial refund.
Try another company! ...

...a car online from the Hertz website and, after filling in my requirements given a price which wasn't the cheapest but wasn't far out and I decided to go for a brand name I knew.
I picked up the car fine, dropped it back on time, everything seemed to run smoothly. It wasn't until I received my credit card bill I found out they charged me 3 times (yes - 3 TIMES!) what they quoted me. I, of course got straight onto the phone and was told there were ... ...to add, such as a young persons surcharge (€30 a day+tax), a cost to check if the fuel was refilled, booking fee, etc.
- Apparently, the line that they could charge my card without telling me was hidden deep within 1 of their 34 pages of 'terms and conditions' which, according to their customer services, I agreed to by clicking the reserve button. I have no problem paying charges, but, why can't they be forward and honest and tell me about them? ...

...in Mallorca, the Rep from Hertz came to our hotel to hand over the keys. He asked for payment which we had already payed along with our holiday, he said he had never got payment and we would have to pay, when we said we wouldn't he suggested ripping up our credit card (for some reason) so we didn't give him the credit card. We phoned Thomson (who we booked the holiday and car through - possibly more their fault than Hertz but i don't really know) ... ...that day. We've never used Thomson (or any package holidays) or Hertz again. The car was damaged, under powered and old. Service was bad and the Hertz rep spoke little English. I'll give them the benefit of the doubt and blame Thomson mostly, though they're still only getting 2 stars. ...

...booked a car rental via Hertz for 6 weeks car hire in the United States at a cost of over £1500. 2 weeks into the rental period we realised we were not using the car as much as anticipated and rang the hertz US call centre to arrange an early return intending to save money and hire cars on an as needs basis, I was assured I would only be charged for the period used, and duly returned the car.
No credit was subsequently posted to my card, and I took ... ...is no refund due, it states in there smallprint that they do not refund prepaid rentals if the car is handed back early. They are refusing to refund nearly $1000 worth of prepaid/unused rental. It is scandalous. I will never use Hertz again, and would not recomend them to anyone. ...

...I have generally not found Hertz to be the cheapest option when hiring a car, I think it is safe to say that you get what you pay for when it comes to customer service. When hiring a car for a few days in Canberra (Airport outlet), Australia, we wanted to pay for the car using frequent flyer points. Hertz run a scheme, for regular hirers of their cars, called Hertz Gold Club. By filling in a (long) application form you simply quote the gold club number when reserving a car and no further personal/payment details are required.
Membership also means that you experience less "hassle" at pickup time. Hertz Gold Club membership has come to the rescue three times this year for me:
1) At Chicago airport the whole airport was closed (bigger than Heathrow) ... ...Straight down to Hertz and use the Gold Club card to beat the queue of several hundred other hopefuls......and a short drive and a good nights sleep was had until the rearranged flight the next day
2) At Heathrow your car is sitting ready to go at the depot.....no need for any forms etc. just head straight off.
3) Best of all - in light of the recent petrol shortage - their cars still came with a full tank of petrol despite none being available ...

...credit card statement I called Hertz only to be called 'stupid' for not reading their terms and conditions.... But then it didn't say anything about these charges in the terms and conditions I read.
In fact, they had indeed detailed all their 'unquoted' costs they were going to charge my card - within 1 of 34 pages hidden in a popup, launched by a tiny button in the bottom of their page.
Is it too much to ask for a company to be upfront with it's ...

Recently I rented from Hertz and I have been fully satified. They have very good, friendly and compentet customer service and it takes about 5 minutes from arriving at their desk until you actually get to sit in the car. We chose a Ford Ka for ca. £70 for a whole weekend and got upgraded to a Ford Focus Station Car. the car was clean, filled with fuel and was a lot better than what you would expect from a Ford. £ 70 is really not a bad deal for a ... ...times. What I found the most convenient was that you could simply book over the internet which took litterally 5 minutes. It arranged everything and the only thing you need is a valid driver's license and a creditcard.
Herzt have many outlets, all are well-staffed and we only had to queue for a very short while. Their available selection also is good enough. Basically, I am a fully satisfied customer and would rent from them any time! ...

...but Hertz, as everybody uses Hertz and the queues are huge. National, Avis and Europar all operate franchises - and probably don't have Vauxhalls (Opels).
I was also stung for extra fuel at the end. They aske me if I wanted to return it empty. Under pressure from the huge queue I agreed and they charged me a full tank (fine) at 30% above the fuel pump rate (rip-off).
Which slightly begs the question, why do petrol cars in France? Diesels are so ...

...return of the car, the Hertz Rental operator got on his hands and knee's and started to crawl around the bottom of the car and brought to my attension a small stone chip on the car front skirt. This small chip was between 1-2mm and could not be seen whilst stood up. A similar event took place on the rear of the vehicle.
To my amazement, he said the car was damaged by me and they would be charging me the insurance excess. I strongly objected, but ...

I booked a car at Glasgow Airport online, with two booster seats for my children. They were supposed to be £15 (for the two of them)for the week, according to the online quote. But when I received the bill at home, a few days after returning the car, I found out that I had been charged £35 (2 x £17.5) for the 'child seats' ! Of course, I complained through the Customer Satisfaction Survey I was asked to complete afterwards, but it really looks like ...

I used Hertz car hire with a joint offer from Ryan Air. When I arrived at the airport ( glasgow Prestwick) no car was available even though I had booked in advance. I was forced to book another car because I was due urgently at a meeting . I then found that the price to book on the spot with any of the other car hire firms was cheaper than using the special discount voucher with Ryan Air. Afterwards I tried to get a refund from Ryan Air and Hertz ...
