Advantages: Good History Lesson! Disadvantages: Scary stuff, dark, spooky, wierd and claustrophobia kicks in!
Our trip to Edinburgh's dark side!
My partner and I decided to go on a trip (yeah again. We are never in!) We decided on Edinburgh for the day. It is only 100 miles from where we live (best not walk then.) Edinburgh is easy to drive to but we decided to let the train take the strain.. (Good saying or what?)
We booked our tickets online and they were the reader offer ones where you save tickets up in our local newspaper and therefore it is greatly ... ...were as much as 200quid however ours came to a staggering £20.. And that wasn't each either so in this instance it was a lot cheaper to go this way than to put petrol into the car (mine or his, we never can decide anyway?)
Off we go, I would tell you about going into Asda to buy 18 evening chronicles but you would think me mad.
Edinburgh as I'm sure everyone knows has a castle and that was our first port of call and was very good as well as interesting ...

Advantages: Fascinating Disadvantages: A little claustrophobic
...the guided tour of Edinburgh's hidden underground vaults run by Mercat Tours.
Edinburgh's underground vaults have only recently been uncovered after lying abandoned and full of waste for many years. Now open to the public on accompanied viewings only, accessible only via huge locked doors which look like any others in the city's winding old streets, they are a real treat - a wander back into the city's history and a VERY spooky experience.
The ... ...as you learn of Edinburgh's hidden history.
The vaults are lit by candles and dim electric lights. You walk on floors of volcanic rock and find yourself constantly tripping if you don't watch out. You have to follow the guide closely, as even she doesn't know the full layout of the place and follows only the lighted paths. It's slightly claustrophobic in places, but in others the ceilings have been destroyed and there is plenty of room to breathe. ...

Advantages: What a way to spend an hour Disadvantages: not for kids or claustrophobics
Taking a walk into Edinburgh's dark and sometimes spooky past, was quite an experience and defiantly one not to be missed. We stayed in Edinburgh for our anniversary weekend and not being a shopaholic and more into history, I searched for something to do and found the vaults tour. We opted to go through Mercat Tours (but there are other tour companies that offer this service) they offer several walking tours of Edinburgh, both daytime and night and ... ...vaults tour is £6 per person and takes approximately 1 hour and in my opinion is worth every penny. Tickets can be obtained from their shop, on line, over the phone or you can just turn up at the cross 15 minuets before the tour begins.
The tour started at the mercat cross on the high street where we were meet by their guide who was a local historian (as are most of the guides for Mercat) as we had opted for the 4 o'clock tour she told us that this ...

...dark depths that are the hidden vaults and they vary in length between 1 and 2 hours duration. All are competitively priced around £6 for adults. The max you'll pay is £7.50 for adults for the Ghosts and Gouls walk which includes refreshment in the 'Oldest Pub in Edinburgh' at the end of the tour. So, like I was saying, I am a big chicken and I made it out alive. It's about as much ghostly fun as you can have with...well...with your clothes on? (Not that I'm sure what GHOSTLY fun you can have with your clothes off...I DON'T want to know...) Go on, do it! You'll love it! It'll give you plenty to ...

I've spent somewhere in the region of 20 weeks on courses in and around Edinburgh over the past 12 years or so, the accomodation being in a variety of Edinburgh hotels. In the beginning I wasn't too clued up on Edinburgh but now I'm pretty up to speed with the central areas.
The courses I attended generally included people of many different nationalities and when we were free to do so we frequented some of the many restaurants, bars etc. within ... ...food quality standard these restaurants are. Often being the sole Jock present I usually became the unofficial tourist guide and it was my pleasure to show off the architecture and atmosphere of that brilliant place. With Edinburgh Castle and Arthur's Seat in particular, I can't think of a European city with a more dramatic backdrop. At dusk or after dark in particular, the uplit buildings look amazing and never fail to impress. The firework displays ...
