Advantages: Superb location. Comfortable, relaxing hotel, steeped in history. Superb staff. Disadvantages: Loud Christmas parties tended to conflict with the country hotel ethos!
...at the (correctly-named) Avisford Park Hilton near Arundel on the south coast of England. Described by Hilton themselves as an hotel where “You can live like a Baronet. After all, it was once the home of Baronet Montagu, Admiral and friend of Lord Nelson. Set in 89 acres of lovely gardens and parkland in England's south downs, Avisford park is as majestic now as it ever was”, we were really looking forward to our stay. ...beautiful Arundel and selected the Hilton as we had never stayed at one before but believed their name to be synomonous with "excellence".
On first arriving our impressions were of a lovely old building that had retained all its original features, set in extensive well-maintained grounds (although most of it seemed to be a golf course) with sufficient parking for all. Check-in was friendly and quick before we were directed in the general direction ... ...first thing that hit us was the strong smell of chlorine permeating throughout, secondly was our ascension up three flights of stairs to our top floor room, laden down with our luggage this was quite a feat but there is no elevator option.
Our room was a double (with smoking) overlooking the golf course. As soon as we opened the door we noticed a very strong smell of stale cigarette smoke, which even to two smokers isn't pleasant, but fortunately ...

Advantages: Great service, food, rooms and public spaces Disadvantages: No lift
...what you'd expect from a Hilton - very classy. The health club has a smallish but very warm pool, and a small gym, sauna and steamroom - quite adequate. The only slight downer may be the lack of lift if you have small kids, but the staff will happily help carry stuff if you need help. Avisford Park is one of the better choices. Upon entry to the grounds it has a long driveway which leads to a beautiful hotel frontage. It is set in acres of peaceful parkland which is great on a summers day. The general feel of the hotel is a relaxed slow time environment ... ...not discourage children it does not present itself to attract them and few are found there. This is a good place to stay for a 2 night stay for two adults . Having stayed there twice (this year and '03), on both occassions the food and service was top class, way beyond the 2 night price of £139 in total for 2 adults with breakfast on both mornings and dinner on the first night. The rooms (we stayed in the newer wing) were of a good standard if a ...
