...more than surprised when the Hilton came top of the list on Expedia and Last Minute.com. The average price for a double room in most standard hotels in Southampton is around £80 per night. But for some unknown reason the Hilton was only £40! After a bit more research I decided to plump for this and make the most of it.

I can’t vouch for the official Hilton hotel site as I booked this trip through Expedia. However, I looked at the ... ...I’d been to the Hilton in Southampton before, but never to stay, only for another dinner. Therefore I was quite aware that it was nowhere near the city centre. I guess this is part of the reason for their massive drop in price for the rooms (which are ordinarily also around £80 per night). Advantages: Nice rooms Disadvantages: Ordinary service
...but our experience at the Hilton wasn't overwhelming. They didn't have our booking on arrival, and did not deal with this problem particularly well. They took a tone which implied we must have booked it wrong, despite having a print out of our booking confirmation. This all got sorted and we eventually got a room, so in the end it all worked out. The next issue arose when we went to order room service. 3 items on a not so hug menu were not available, ... ...hot; but it was edible so i shouldn't complain too much.
In the scheme of things, these aren't huge issues and we still had a nice time. But, I was expecting that for the money they charge, maybe we could expect better customer service, and just a better service overall. For the money we paid we did not feel we got value for money and thus won't be returning in a hurry. ...

Advantages: Helpful and considerate reception staff Disadvantages: Off-hand restaurant staff.
...We are Gold VIP Hilton Honours members and we enjoy the little extras that our loyalty usually brings. We are entitled to an upgrade to an executive room and can use the facilities of an Executive Lounge if the hotel has one. Southampton does not have an executive floor but the receptionist made sure we were given several extras to compensate. She sent a bottle of wine and a small box of handmade chocolates to our room along with bathrobes and bottles ... ...good value (£60 for a king bedded room with breakfast for two and the extra trimmings we were given) and the room was what we would expect for a standard Hilton room. The reception staff we encountered were excellent but the restaurant staff left something to be desired. ...
