Advantages: Good price, useful location, clean and comfortable Disadvantages: Breakfast served only in room, poor breakfast, no lock/light working in bathroom
...website came up with the Holmlea as a possibility and a visit to their own website showed an even cheaper rate of £45 for a double room without private bathroom. We made our reservation by telephone, giving our credit card details as a guarantee. We were told that there would be nobody there until around five pm, after the school run, which was no problem to us as we could stop off for a drink on the way from the train station.
On the day of travel ... ...How trusting! The Holmlea is situated in a quiet residential area just a ten minute walk from both the train station and the city centre. There are also pubs, restaurants and shops nearby if you don't want to go into town. For guests arriving by car there is limited on street permit parking. First impressions are good; the exterior is well looked after and though it is small the front garden is attractive. We were able to get inside without a problem ...

...stay was a B&B named Holmlea Guesthouse.
Why we chose it?
Before we started our trip we searched on the internet trying to find reasonably priced accommodation that ideally was close to the tourist areas of York. But we just got a tray consisted of a small croissant, a carton of yoghurt and a carton of juice each plus three jams tubs (all of them were bought from Tesco). After our first breakfast my husband started to go a local shop to buy extra food every morning before they put the breakfast on the floor of our door by 8.30am.
Checking out
When we checked out and was told they ...

...because of my stay at Holmlea Guesthouse on Southlands Road.
It seems that guests come second to the owners at this guesthouse. From the very beginning when I was making my booking, things were less than professional or reassuring. I was asked to call back later because the baby needed to be fed. Alarm bells should have been ringing, but I decided not to be cynical and I called back later to complete my reservation. I was told that nobody would ... ...front door to say that Holmlea Guesthouse could not accept payments by card or cheque and that guests would have to make arrangements to pay by cash! I'm sure that this is illegal, especially given the fact that the guesthouse has prominent Visa stickers on the windows. We travelled all the way to York before finding this information at the front door. I was not even informed the night before departing when I had called regarding our arrival. The ...
