Every year the great Colorado River used to flood the plains of a number of Western states reeking havoc death and destruction.     ....Never mind Las Vegas, I thought Hoover Dam was one of the most spectacular man-made creations in Nevada! Leave behind the casinos and get this one on the top of your list of things to do when there. Despite the fact that Hoover Dam is just a huge big piece of cement - not hugely attractive - it is seriously impressive, architecturally a work of art and a phenomenal tool against the force of nature.     Advantages Advantages marvel at an engineering masterpiece, find out about its history

    Disadvantages Disadvantages expensive tour, not much to do apart from looking down a wall

    When visiting Las Vegas there are a few things you should do, apart from loosing all your spending money in the casinos. Trust me, you will loose, the casinos will win in the end, they are designed that way. Everyone, when in the area, should try and do one of two trips, of course both would be best: visit Grand Canyon - that big hole in the ground will leave you breathless - as well as take time out to see one of the 7 engineering wonders of the world, the one and only Hoover Dam. If you are pushed for time, Hoover Dam is the better option as it is only about 30 miles outside Las Vegas ... more

    Disadvantages Disadvantages You can't get out at the bottom of the dam anymore so the trip inside isn't great value

    The Hoover Dam is in the USA, on the border between the two states of Arizona and Nevada. It was built in 1936 and at that time it was the world’s largest concrete structure ever built. This was up until 1945 when the Grand Coulee Dam was built in Washington was built. It currently stands as the 35th-largest hydroelectric generating station in the world. Despite the dam being quite a long way down the list of generating stations it is still one of (if not THE) best known dams in the world.     Ok, let's get the dam jokes out of the way. We took the dam tour and took all the dam pictures we liked. That's out of the way now. The Hoover Dam was and still is a remarkable feat of engineering. Built at breakneck speed in the 1930s to tap the awesome power of the Colorado river. It was even completed ahead of schedule but at a great cost in terms of lives lost, 112 in total. It is located about 30 miles from Las Vegas. Since 9/11 it is not possible to take luggage over the dam, for this reason a large diversion must be taken to cross the Colorado river. A bridge is currently being built by ... more

    Advantages Advantages on route between grand canyon and las vegas so unlikely to need a special trip

    Disadvantages Disadvantages not as scenic as other dams in the area

    Hoover Dam is a truly amazing piece of engineering!! I've been there twice although both times were on the same trip. The first time we were driving from the Grand Canyon to Las Vegas so we went over the dam at night which was an amazingly surreal experience. It was reasonably soon after 9/11 so security was high, I don't know if it still is but they weren't letting large lorries over and there was loads of lights and army personel there etc etc so it looked like something out of a science fiction film driving over it with this large black gulf below you.
