As a fairly regular visitor to Bangkok, I always book flights and then sort out my own accommodation rather than get a package deal. Accommodation is cheap and plentiful there, we're talking £10 - £15 per night for what might equate to a three star hotel. However, a tip I learned is that if you book through a Thai travel agent, you can get a fair sized discount on the "walk-in" rates. I always do it this way now but, as my favourite Thai travel agent ... ...maybe better not mention their name right now.
Our travel agent chose The Manhattan for us for several reasons. It's very conveniently located in Sukhumvit, the business and one of the main tourist areas of Bangkok. It's cheap, we paid about £13 per night (December 2000) for a spacious double room with en-suite facilities, telly, phone, fridge, and all the usual comforts, plus a good buffet breakfast.
