...bookings, we stayed in a hotel quite far away from mid town. The second time I visited I went with my mum, who had never been and I'd decided we needed somewhere central, although Manhattan isn't massive you want to be near all the touristy bits and pieces. So after looking around I decided being in the thick of it probably wasn't an option as it was all quite expensive. Then I found the Pennsylvania, opposite Madison Square Garden's and Penn Station, ... ...We booked the hotel with a flight and all in all paid £450 each for a return flight with Virgin to JFK and 5 nights' accommodation in the Pennsylvania, I think it was very reasonable, you may have your own thoughts. ~The actual hotel~ It has 1700 rooms and is the fourth largest hotel in New York City. The hotel was purpose built in 1919. A grand 90 years old. The front of the hotel is flat and gives the impression that it is a square building, it ...

...number of people stated this hotel was dirty, the staff unfriendly and their stay a nightmare with a majority saying to stay well clear.
Having just returned from my holiday there, I'd like to balance this out with my experience. Being a 2-star hotel, I wasn't expecting the earth and found myself pleasantly surprised. When you enter the hotel lobby, it shines at you with the marble floors and chandaliers; all very clean and had that bit of wow-factor. ... ...I am aware that the hotel is/was renovating it's rooms and so I may have felt different had I not had a renovated room. So my main recommendation to people thinking of staying there, is to ask for a renovated room - I guarantee you won't be disappointed.
The biggest selling point for this hotel is it's excellent central location. Directly opposite Madison Square Garden and Penn Station, it has excellent subway links - 1 stop down from Times Square. ...

Advantages: Close to Macys, Madison Square Gardens, Subway Links Disadvantages: Very busy, unclean, in need of serious updating
This hotel is situated in a fantastic location and is very cheap, however the standards inside reflect this, and the location is by far the best thing about this hotel On entry to the hotel there is a large foyer area which is always extremely busy, this hotel boasts about being one of the largest hotels in New York City comprising of around 1700 rooms and so check in can be a long wait and then another long wait if you need to return to reception ... ...abrupt, no friendly smile or courteous attitude and the bellboys are always in competition to try and reach your luggage first. Location of the hotel is good, right near Maddison Square Gardens. We booked for three nights as part of our 21st birthday present to one another, this was our second visit to NYC after getting engaged the year before (see review of Roosevelt Hotel). Price was good for time of year though this was in comparison to Christmas week the year before.

General staff were friendly and the doormen impressively polite and competant. We ate in the diner next to the lobby which was an authentic american dinner. Overall I would not reccomend this hotel unless you are prepared to take your own sheets, I'm not a whinger normally but you pay good money for a hotel ...

...We got to our hotel of which we though would be lovely. We were wrong. . . .
We got to reception and waited for 20 minutes to be seen and then when we got to the desk they started asking us for credit cards so they could have a deposit even though we had paid for everything. It looks pretty on the outside but not so good on the inside. I personally don't think I would stay there again. It was just too much hassel. And wasn't to pleasent. You go on holiday for a break not to go to a dive and be misserable. We were very happy to go home as the hotel ...

...we arrived over. With decent hotel rooms at a premium in NY, its hit-and-miss what sort of room you'll get for the type of money you'd pay for a 4 or 5 star elsewhere.
The front of the hotel and the lobby are impressive - marble floors, shining reception, deep carpet. The give-away is the crowd of increasingly dis-heartened would-be guests assembled in the middle, waiting desperately to check-in. To say the reception staff are inefficient and unhelpful ... ...plenty of space, and the hotel couldn't be in a more convenient location. It just depends what you're visiting New York for - if its shop all day, drink all night, the Pennsylvania is ideal; if you plan on spending a lot of time in your hotel room, or want something sumptuous, it probably won't suit. ...

Advantages: Fantastic Location, Price Disadvantages: Very Basic
...the long search for a hotel began.
We wanted somewhere that was a hotel (and not a hostel), a good central location close to attractions and transport and a decent room - the hard task was that we only wanted to pay £400 (£200 each) for a 6 nights stay. The hotel was clean (ish) and each room door was in desperate need of replacing, but all that being said, the rooms were great! Very basic, but this is only 2 star so it was to be expected. The main room had a double bed, some drawers, a table and a television. There was a very small room off to one side - basically a wardrobe / changing room. ...

Advantages: great Location, Great Value Disadvantages: No frills
The hotel Pennsylvania is a tourist class hotel. This means low bidget no frills you get what you pay for. but at the end of the day if all you want is a clean room with a bed shower and basic tv, this hotel more than does the job. having been to NY numerous times I can genuinely say you will not find a better priced hotel. ...original telephone number for this hotel is 65000, so, for Glenn Miller fans, this has to be worth a visit, but I cannot recommend staying there.

Quick review of Hotel Pennsylvania, New York City
We have just completed a world trip and I must say this was the worst hotel of our Travels. Upon arrival we were advised there was no reservations made for us, for which we had legit vouchers and confirmation numbers
They advised us the hotel was booked out, but still had rooms available via the net.
The Check In staff and Manager (Glen) were unapproachable and we sat guarding our luggage in their lobby for 2 and 1/2 hours while our travel agent in OZ rebooked a room for us via the net.
They would not allow us to go somewhere else other than the lobby, or store our luggage while something was sorted out.
Eventually a room was found for us through the oz travel agent, but in the room, the smell of urine and condition of the room was appauling. With windows that half closed. Writing and marks??? on the walls.
Please be warned this is not a hotel you wish to stay at for their lack of service and consideration for the weary traveller ...

The Hotel Pennsylvannia is the best hotel I have stayed in in central
Manhattan. It is perfectly situated for easy access to all of New Yorks best sights. For the single traveller it may be expensive as I found on my first visit but for two it is great.
