Location, Location, Location

Advantages: Great Location and Price
Disadvantages: Needed modernising (and now has been)

...bookings, we stayed in a hotel quite far away from mid town. The second time I visited I went with my mum, who had never been and I'd decided we needed somewhere central, although Manhattan isn't massive you want to be near all the touristy bits and pieces. So after looking around I decided being in the thick of it probably wasn't an option as it was all quite expensive. Then I found the Pennsylvania, opposite Madison Square Garden's and Penn Station, ...
...We booked the hotel with a flight and all in all paid £450 each for a return flight with Virgin to JFK and 5 nights' accommodation in the Pennsylvania, I think it was very reasonable, you may have your own thoughts. ~The actual hotel~ It has 1700 rooms and is the fourth largest hotel in New York City. The hotel was purpose built in 1919. A grand 90 years old. The front of the hotel is flat and gives the impression that it is a square building, it ...

Hotel Pennsylvania

Advantages: Location, Cheap, Comfortable
Disadvantages: Decor, Basic Accommodation

...number of people stated this hotel was dirty, the staff unfriendly and their stay a nightmare with a majority saying to stay well clear. Having just returned from my holiday there, I'd like to balance this out with my experience. Being a 2-star hotel, I wasn't expecting the earth and found myself pleasantly surprised. When you enter the hotel lobby, it shines at you with the marble floors and chandaliers; all very clean and had that bit of wow-factor. ...
...I am aware that the hotel is/was renovating it's rooms and so I may have felt different had I not had a renovated room. So my main recommendation to people thinking of staying there, is to ask for a renovated room - I guarantee you won't be disappointed. The biggest selling point for this hotel is it's excellent central location. Directly opposite Madison Square Garden and Penn Station, it has excellent subway links - 1 stop down from Times Square. ...

Pennsylvania Hotel

Advantages: Close to Macys, Madison Square Gardens, Subway Links
Disadvantages: Very busy, unclean, in need of serious updating

This hotel is situated in a fantastic location and is very cheap, however the standards inside reflect this, and the location is by far the best thing about this hotel On entry to the hotel there is a large foyer area which is always extremely busy, this hotel boasts about being one of the largest hotels in New York City comprising of around 1700 rooms and so check in can be a long wait and then another long wait if you need to return to reception ...
...abrupt, no friendly smile or courteous attitude and the bellboys are always in competition to try and reach your luggage first. They are also very rude and will blatently stand there with there hand out until you provide them with a tip they like! Rooms - Where to begin, our first room was supposed to be a triple room which we had booked in advance several months earlier, on arriving at our room we were suprised to be confronted with just one double ...

Hotel Pennsylvania

Advantages: Quality Room On Complaining Of Poor Standards
Disadvantages: Fourth Room Lucky!

...view. Location of the hotel is good, right near Maddison Square Gardens. We booked for three nights as part of our 21st birthday present to one another, this was our second visit to NYC after getting engaged the year before (see review of Roosevelt Hotel). Price was good for time of year though this was in comparison to Christmas week the year before. Upon arriving, believing we'd booked a room as shown on the website (which turns out to be a 'premier ...
...a trip there than the hotel room you stay in, we didn't make any more use of the facilities other than sleeping, showering and changing clothes. General staff were friendly and the doormen impressively polite and competant. We ate in the diner next to the lobby which was an authentic american dinner. Overall I would not reccomend this hotel unless you are prepared to take your own sheets, I'm not a whinger normally but you pay good money for a hotel ...

to good to be true,

Advantages: big rooms, close too all the sites
Disadvantages: smelt, grotty, old, run down.

...We got to our hotel of which we though would be lovely. We were wrong. . . . We got to reception and waited for 20 minutes to be seen and then when we got to the desk they started asking us for credit cards so they could have a deposit even though we had paid for everything. So as you can imagien it was rather annoying. We didnt have a credit card so we had to agree to pay them cash. We had to pay 75 dollars out which we strugged because we had ...
...only thing good about the hotel was that your able to bring your own food and drink into the rooms, nice big rooms and huge beds, close to all the sites and it was cheap. It looks pretty on the outside but not so good on the inside. I personally don't think I would stay there again. It was just too much hassel. And wasn't to pleasent. You go on holiday for a break not to go to a dive and be misserable. We were very happy to go home as the hotel ...

More 'a base' than 'love it or hate it' place

Advantages: fantastic location, spacious room
Disadvantages: many floors rundown, aircon unit directly below our window

...we arrived over. With decent hotel rooms at a premium in NY, its hit-and-miss what sort of room you'll get for the type of money you'd pay for a 4 or 5 star elsewhere. The front of the hotel and the lobby are impressive - marble floors, shining reception, deep carpet. The give-away is the crowd of increasingly dis-heartened would-be guests assembled in the middle, waiting desperately to check-in. To say the reception staff are inefficient and unhelpful ...
...plenty of space, and the hotel couldn't be in a more convenient location. It just depends what you're visiting New York for - if its shop all day, drink all night, the Pennsylvania is ideal; if you plan on spending a lot of time in your hotel room, or want something sumptuous, it probably won't suit. ...

Just across the street from Macy's...

Advantages: Fantastic Location, Price
Disadvantages: Very Basic

...the long search for a hotel began. We wanted somewhere that was a hotel (and not a hostel), a good central location close to attractions and transport and a decent room - the hard task was that we only wanted to pay £400 (£200 each) for a 6 nights stay. Given that this is New York City we didn't think we would get all our requests for that price, but then we fell upon the Hotel Pennsylvania. The price was great so we booked straight away (it cost ...
...City, we finally arrived at Hotel Penn. Check in was quick and simple so we headed straight for our room. The hotel was clean (ish) and each room door was in desperate need of replacing, but all that being said, the rooms were great! Very basic, but this is only 2 star so it was to be expected. The main room had a double bed, some drawers, a table and a television. There was a very small room off to one side - basically a wardrobe / changing room. ...

EXCELLENT VALUE FOR MONEY

Advantages: great Location, Great Value
Disadvantages: No frills

The hotel Pennsylvania is a tourist class hotel. This means low bidget no frills you get what you pay for. but at the end of the day if all you want is a clean room with a bed shower and basic tv, this hotel more than does the job. having been to NY numerous times I can genuinely say you will not find a better priced hotel. It is clean, the rooms are a fair size in relatively good condition. I have only had two problems during many stays there and ...
...if you want a better hotel pay better prices. The location could not be better, You are less than a block from madison Square garden, and Penn Station ( from which you can get a subway to anywhere incl. the airports) one block from macys and herald Square (hundreds of shops) and easy walking distance to times square. this hotel isnt the Ritz but doesnt pretend to be. it offers excellent value for money and somewhere clean to sleep in one of the ...

Hotel Pennsylvania

Advantages: Cheap, fantastic foyer
Disadvantages: Dirty, small rooms

...original telephone number for this hotel is 65000, so, for Glenn Miller fans, this has to be worth a visit, but I cannot recommend staying there. The location of this two-star hotel is excellent, being in the garment district, where the major designers used to have their establishments, right opposite Penn Station and Madison Square Gardens, over the street from Macy's, and less than two blocks from the Empire State Building. The huge foyer is ...
...all the time, and the queue for the desk is usually very long, but the efficient staff deal with it very quickly. There are food outlets in the foyer, but they are not cheap. The eight lifts get you quickly to your floor. I was impressed by the cleanliness, considering the number of people in the foyer. I suppose that, if we had had a room which was clean, we may have stayed there for the whole week, but we moved out after one night. We got a full ...

Quick review of Hotel Pennsylvania, New York City

We have just completed a world trip and I must say this was the worst hotel of our Travels. Upon arrival we were advised there was no reservations made for us, for which we had legit vouchers and confirmation numbers They advised us the hotel was booked out, but still had rooms available via the net. The Check In staff and Manager (Glen) were unapproachable and we sat guarding our luggage in their lobby for 2 and 1/2 hours while our travel agent in OZ rebooked a room for us via the net. They would not allow us to go somewhere else other than the lobby, or store our luggage while something was sorted out. Eventually a room was found for us through the oz travel agent, but in the room, the smell of urine and condition of the room was appauling. With windows that half closed. Writing and marks??? on the walls. Please be warned this is not a hotel you wish to stay at for their lack of service and consideration for the weary traveller ...

The Place To Stay

Advantages: Clean and well equipped good position
Disadvantages: expensive for the single traveller

The Hotel Pennsylvannia is the best hotel I have stayed in in central Manhattan. It is perfectly situated for easy access to all of New Yorks best sights. For the single traveller it may be expensive as I found on my first visit but for two it is great. I reccomend booking in advance as rooms are very expensive taken on arrival. Times Square, Maddison Square Gardens, Empire State Building, Central Park and Fifth Avenue are all within easy walking ...

Awful room

Advantages: Location
Disadvantages: Everything else

We arrived in New york in February after a long flight with continental to Newark airport. We checked into a nice helpful lobby however when we got out of the lift we were greeted with an awful old musky smell. We went into our room and found it smelt even worse. The bathroom was dirty and mouldy, there were bare wires in the room and damp across the walls to make matters worse 2 male guests walked in to the room as they had been issued the same ...
...moved rooms and were spoken to rudely we were given another room when we went in again it smelt worse than the first, the carpet as filthy and the beds not clean. Our window on the 18th floor was also broken open and would not shut it was very cold. We asked to move again and they shouted at us on reception that we could not move untill the next night. We waited and did get moved to a slightly better room as the window was closed and it didnt smell ...

...york city landed us at Hotel Pennsylvania. Great location, just across from the Amtrak on seventh avenue. After a long wait in the lobby (it was late and they were obviously not staffed for the number of people), we get our room key. Nice to see a secuirty guard keeping non residents out of the elevators. room was on the 11th floor, at the end of a long corridor. Big surprise.
