Advantages Advantages Relaxing, interesting holiday choice

Disadvantages Disadvantages Internet too expensive, some staff difficulties

Escape on the Island Escape A beautiful sunset, sailaway music plays, I have the cocktail- of the day firmly in my hand as the ship slowly moves away from the wharf - I am on my first ever cruise. Island Escape has been the focus of my holiday thoughts for months and months, I've read about it and dreamed of the day I'd start a week on the Mediterannean, with my dearest friend in the world, my partner. I'm too old to have dreamed of romantic Di Caprio nights, perching precariously over the front of the ship with a handsome movie star singing memorable words to me; my expectations were of the ... more

Advantages Advantages Cheap, Informal, Great for First timers

Disadvantages Disadvantages No cash on board, not a lot for kids

My other half and I have recently returned from our first cruise. I personally would never of dreamed of going on a cruise because I had the opinion that Cruises were for older people and people with money. But I was wrong, and I thoroughly enjoyed this holiday. We booked it last minute, about 2 weeks before, so managed to get a good deal, around £620 pp with an outside luxury cabin. The Cruise company was Island Cruises, renowned for being 'Informal'. The Cruise title was Med Essence. Now for the full details. Cruise Itinery: Day 1: Flew from UK to Palma Day 2: Day at Sea Day 3: Corsica ... more

Advantages Advantages Cheap and cheerful introduction

Disadvantages Disadvantages Too informal and no all inclusive

Up until recently my partner and I were what one could dub “cruising virgins” though for a number of years we discussed back and forth the possibility, but had been put off by the cost as for most cruises there is a vast financial outlay which would be unfortunate if you did not enjoy the experience. We are a couple who like active, busy holidays, but with both of us being under vast amounts of pressure at work, my father dying and no holiday for over two years we were prepared for something a little less active. Earlier this year we were discussing what we would do for a holiday this year as ... more

    Advantages Advantages Informal

Disadvantages Disadvantages Shore excursions quite expensive

Last year when on holiday we incorporated a 3 day cruise to the Bahamas just to see if we would like the whole cruise experience. It was a great success though a bit more formal than we would have liked, I mean who packs an evening dress and tiara (I kid you not) when you are on your summer holidays. So when booking this year we opted for a more relaxed cruise with Island Escape for 7 days round the Med, billed as the cruise for people who don’t do cruises. We had a very early start to catch the 8.30am flight from Glasgow to Palma Mallorca. The flight was on time and very smooth so after a ... more

    Advantages Advantages Food, Hospitality, Entertainment

Disadvantages Disadvantages Pricey excursions, weather (not what you expect from the Med in August)

My Mum and I have recently returned from our second foreign cruise; but our first in the Med and with Island Cruises. The ship was the Island Escape and the itinerary was Med Essence; stopping at Ajaccio, Civitavecchia (for Rome), La Spezia, Nice/Villefranche and Mahon. We thoroughly enjoyed the cruise and would have no hesitation in recommending Island Cruises and travelling with them again. Now for the details... Day 1: Palma, Mallorca We were on the 6am flight from Gatwick so had landed in Palma and been swiftly transferred to the ship by 10.30 local time. As we were one of the first ... more

Advantages Advantages Lets us go places we couldn't normally

    Disadvantages Disadvantages See review

First off let me explain; this review isn’t going to cover the same ground as the other great reviews I’ve seen about here. What this one will cover (Hopefully) is what it is like to cruise aboard the Island Escape if you have some difficulty in walking – This isn’t going to be a review written by someone who is confined to a wheelchair or even someone who needs to use a wheelchair some of the time; it’ll be from the perspective of helping someone who does use a wheelchair some of the time. We cruised on the Island Escape last May (2004) for our honeymoon. Unfortunately due to health problems ... more

    Advantages Advantages Cheap..Friendly ship

Disadvantages Disadvantages Getting a little old

Well, back in 2003 we did a one week cruise onboard the Island express on the Mediterranean Essence Itinerary (see previous miketrax report on Island Escape). Then we joined the ship at Palma and did the usual Med ports. With a little reservation we decided to give the Island Escape another go to see if things had changed. This time we were tempted to try the Colourful Coasts Canaries cruise at a late booking reduced rate of £445 for a Manchester flight with a deck 5/6 outside cabin departing on 26 Feb 2010. FIRST IMPRESSIONS (second time around) The booking procedure was the same as 2003 with ... more

Advantages Advantages cheap, casual, excellent service

    Disadvantages Disadvantages not all inclusive

September 2003 my girlfriend and I weon the Island Escape for a week (followed by a week in Palma - i'll review this later). I have been cruising before with P&O and Carnival Cruises - i found them both to be a bit stuffy insisting on formal wear for meals etc. When i saw the advertisment for Island with its casual style i was interested to say the least. My girlfriend had never been cruising before so she was a bit worried that she might not enjoy it which is why we only went for 1 week. You arrive at Palma airport (direct from Bristol in our case) and follow the signs for Island Cruises. You ... more

Advantages Advantages Great For First Time Cruisers

Disadvantages Disadvantages Not Enough Facilities For Children

For those of you who read the papers, you would have read all about the problems associated with the Island Escape Cruise Ship. As a result of the reported problems I was more than a bit concerned as to whether to go or not as I had never cruised before. All I can say is I am very glad I did go as we had a fantastic time on board. There are two cruises that they run and the one we went on was the Mediterranean Spirit which takes in Palma, Malta, Napoli, Naples & Pisa, Toulon & Menorca. The First thing I would say is that the brochure does states that this is a relaxed and affordable cruise. So ... more

Advantages Advantages Nice ports of call, friendly staff, so much food!

Disadvantages Disadvantages Needs modernising slightly, Agadir is a bad port of call

I went to go back to live with parents and family a few years ago. They had booked a holiday on the Island Cruise that was goin to leave in a few weeks. So they managed to get my name put on the holiday. We flew from Manchester to Tenerife Airport, where there was a coach there to take us to the ship. I will talk about the ship first, then go on about the ports. The ship is very big, although I dont have anything to compare it to. There are 3 restraunts on the ship. -Beachcomber... This is a great restraunt if you just want to be informal. We used this on a morning at breakfast, and in an ... more
