On the River Kwai, Shakes and Shudders
Review of Kanchanaburi (Bangkok) by SophieWehr

Advantages: Beautiful, historical place that I'd visit again
Disadvantages: Sad that so many died in this area

Be warned, out of love, this review is very long (!)but hopefully rich in detail for those who love travelling, and even the armchair traveller. Kanchanaburi was always somewhere we wanted to visit in Thailand, as it was one of the 'Top 40' must do things in our ever handy Rough Guide, a bible for non-connoisseurs like us. So we dutifully noted the bridge, the Death Railway trip, the high cultural factor and promised ourselves we'd make a stop ... Read review

not only a bridge
Review of Kanchanaburi (Bangkok) by traveller55

Advantages: thousands
Disadvantages: it is to far away

...over the Kwae river is Kanchanaburi that can be reached by car in about two hours (130 km) or by train in three and half hours. First of all I discourage you to go with organized tours because their one day program includes many other places and at the end you see practically nothing of really interest and your tour stops at locations where souvenirs vendors are your host. I suggest you to visit one of the thousands of travel agencies in Bangkok ... Read review

More Than Just A Bridge
Review of Kanchanaburi (Bangkok) by ickkate

Advantages: Beautiful waterfalls and river valleys
Disadvantages: What about rights for elephants too?!

Kanchanaburi is the third largest province in Thailand, it borders Myanmar (Burma), and is situated to the West of Bangkok. The primary reason that most foreign visitors head for this province is the Bridge Over The River Kwai; made famous by David Lean's 1957 POW film of the same name. Along with the painful history this province also offers the tourist beautiful waterfalls and river valleys. Our holiday in Thailand was a pretty short affair, ... Read review

River Kwai - a Great Day Trip
Review of Kanchanaburi (Bangkok) by petehall

Advantages: A unique historical journey.
Disadvantages: As a day trip you get a limited view.

Kanchanaburi is the nearest major centre to the Bridge Over the River Kwai and that's the main attraction. I don't usually opt for organised trips, preferring to do my own thing on public transport, but this is one occasion when I think the day trip is best. There is plenty to see and do, but it is spread over a fairly wide geographic area, involves multiple modes of transport and can benefit greatly from local knowledge. If you are staying a few ... The highlight of my trip to Thailand
Review of Kanchanaburi (Bangkok) by OonaPaloma

Advantages: Beautiful Surroundings, Amazing History
Disadvantages: Very Busy!

...and I decided to visit Kanchanaburi almost by mistake. On our third day in Thailand and a bit bewildered by the madness of Bangkok, we decided to organise the first leg of our three week trip. All the coaches heading South were fully booked, so we were persuaded to try going West. Arriving later that night in the dark and in a cramped minibus, I must admit the first thought to pass through my mind was 'where on earth have they brought us to?'. ... Read review

Kanchaniburi
Review of Kanchanaburi (Bangkok) by honetstry

Advantages: Chilled out, loads of history
Disadvantages: Bridge on the River Kwai is vey touristy

Kanchaniburi has to go down as the highlight of my trip to Thailand. Originally built as a camp to hold the POW's building the Bumrmese railway, it has all the neccesary components for the ultimate holiday destination. I went in October 2000 and the weather was hot although overcast. I stayed at the Jolly Frog Backpackers hostel. The rates are around 150 baht a night so you can get a basic room for under £4!! The food was great and many of the retaraunts ... Read review

A must visit
Review of Kanchanaburi (Bangkok) by littledevilxx

Advantages: A little adventure
Disadvantages: basic

Kanchanaburi is a very special place. I have been to Thailand twice for a month each time and I made sure I revisited Kanchanaburi the second time. Kanchanaburi is about 2 hours drive west of Bangkok, some people take only a day to visit on an organised tour and only go to the war graves and the bridge over the river Kwai ( which got its fame from the film of the same name). Although it is interesting to do these things it is worth a longer stay as ... Read review
