Silence reigns

Advantages: Quiet, peaceful, tranquil.
Disadvantages: Not for children or nightlife.

...trip around Zante we saw kefalonia in the distance and I offered to take my new wife on a day trip to see this Island. She declined, declaring, "One day I will go there", its beauty standing out on the distant skyline. It got forgotten as things do in this hectic, stressful, fast paced life we lead in this country. Kefalonia was pushed into memories, other destinations taking priority, financial issues, and life in general, until now. Kefalonia ...
...After looking for several days Kefalonia returned that lost memory with an outstanding cheap holiday that fitted our criteria exactly. It was too cheap to ignore. Zante and Kefalonia are both Islands in a group of seven called the Ionian group of islands. Kefalonia is the largest but has one of the smallest populations, less than 32,000. With an area of 266 square miles it is mountainous, but the most scenic, and has been voted tenth in the world ...

A Place For Tourists and Turtles! (Kefalonia)

Advantages: Stunning scenery and an unspolit landscape
Disadvantages: None

...discovery as the island of Kefalonia gradually unfolded its delights to us. The largest island in the Ionian chain, this picturesque place was virtually decimated by the earthquake which struck in 1953, leaving only the far north untouched, and so everything you see on the island is what has been reborn since then. Don't think Cycladian blue and white houses, but a sun caressed terracotta which has the Venetian influence. Sometimes it is hard to ...
...fundamental things to remember in Kefalonia is that trees and lush vegetation could never thrive without rainfall, and even in September you are taking a gamble if you are a sun worshipper, think very carefully. We had 4 beautiful days with 25 degrees and unbroken sunshine, followed by 24 hours of solid thunder and lightening, with torrential rainfall which was unbroken by not even the slightest hint of summer. Walking along the beach between Katelios ...

Attack of the Killer Sheep

Advantages: One of Europe's cheapest holiday destinations
Disadvantages: Nobody told us all the interesting bits were flattened by an earthquake in 1953

...of the Greek island of Kefalonia wasn't nearly as frightening. This sheep encounter happened when we picked up a late package deal to Kefalonia for a couple of hundred pounds in September, towards the very end of the season. If you go that late expect hot temperatures in the day but a cold breeze in the evenings. The allocation on arrival deal found us in Lassi - an uninteresting strip of shops, restaurants and apartments near the airport and alongside ...
...that in 1953 much of Kefalonia was flattened by an earthquake. The island was quickly re-built (maybe too quickly in terms of practicality of buildings that went up rather than restoration of its former glory). Only Fiskardo survived. Fiskardo is the most northern town on the island and is well worth a visit if you get a chance to do a tour, or hire a car. Pastel coloured buildings overlook this quaint little fishing bay, and there are plenty of ...

seriously UPDATED... my holiday heaven

Advantages: Too many to mention here!
Disadvantages: Some people may find not enough nightlife.

Updated now that we've finally transferred the digital camera pics- all the pics were taken by us as we gallivanted around...! One or two details added to op, too. I went to Kefallonia for the second year running this summer (I'm Greek, and visit the country regularly but I haven't visited a lot of the islands). We travelled from England by car, and found that having a vehicle on the island was useful, although I'm told there's a reliable bus service ...
...green island, the largest of the Ionian group, is nevertheless not too big to be hard to navigate. It is roughly triangular in shape, with an extra peninsula. As such, there's an interesting place at every point! The capital is Argostoli, tucked a little way up the west coast of the island, and opposite the beautiful Lixouri peninsula. At the northernmost tip is Fiskardo, at the south eastern corner are Skala and Poros, and half way up the east coast ...

Skala & touring round Kefalonia

Advantages: Great food, scenery, quiet, fantastic beaches
Disadvantages: Bad airport

I went to Kefalonia for a week at the beginning of July 2005. The weather was very hot and dry, about 39 degrees celsius, which for me was too hot. The locals said the weather was usually well over 40 degrees at that time of year. I went to the resort of Skala with Kosmar. Airport transfer was just over an hour but take travelsick pills , as it's a journey with a lot of hairpin bends. My accommodation was the Michalis Studios in Skala. These were ...
...travel kettle), and separate bedroom and balcony. The only problem I found with the accommodation was that there was no air-conditioning and in July, that makes it impossible to sleep at night. There were a lot of mosquitoes in the room if you left the windows open (you had to do this as it was very stuffy), so bring one of those plug-in mosquito things. Skala was an ideal resort for me. It is a purpose built resort but without all the tackiness ...

Captain Corillei's island

Advantages: beautiful, relaxing island
Disadvantages: a week or 2 weeks isn't enough

...although I’ll be talking about Kefalonia I’ll be concentrating on Skala. We got a good last minute deal for a brilliant price, which is always nice! I’ve watched Captain Corilleus mandolin and read the book and Kefalonia is as beautiful as the book and film suggest. Kefalonia is one of the Ionian islands and is quite near to Italy. It’s population is only 32,000. We were a bit worried about what the weather would be like, with it being late September ...
...It’s the only village in Kefalonia which was unscathed by the 1953 earthquake, so you can see some pre 1953 building there. Price wise we found eating out to be reasonably priced and no more expensive then you’d pay in England. Although we did pay quite a lot for a drink in a beachside café, which is only to be expected. The only down point was that it went far too quickly and now I’m back and it feels as if autumn has truly started! ...

cephalonia ?????

Advantages: quiet relaxing enchanting island
Disadvantages: the rroads

My 2nd holiday to cephalonia and it was like coming home, Back to Lassi - nothing had changed, even the cement where I very childishly wrote my name last year was still there untouched. I stayed in the Venia apartments this year, on a side street below a bar called the aquamarine, which is half way up the hill to the main street - very well placed for liquid refreshments when hill climbing in outragous temperatures ;-) Lassi is mainly one street ...

There is a very private beach to the right handside of the mediterainie hotel, go under the arch around the back ofthe hotel an follow through to the steps a wow your own private beach. An island of tranquility

Advantages: the people, natural beauty, a good Greek experience
Disadvantages: not the place for nightlife

I spent 5 weeks on Kefalonia this summer, totalling my number of visits to the island to 5. Over the years Kefalonia is an island I have simply fallen in love with; other locations just don't compare. Here you feel you are able to experience and observe Greek ways of life, whilst never being too far for some comforting British familiarity. The airport is small but this year I found all my luggage arrived very promptly and things seemed extremely ...
...a few. What makes Kefalonia so special is the people who live and work there. Even staying for a short time you get a sense of being part of the town and are able to build good friendships and acquaintances with many different people. While I was there I made many friends working in various locations, who always remembered my name, the names of my family, and other details about my life - something which you would rarely find in other countries. ...

Kefalonia

Advantages: Friendly, peaceful, scenic, excellent value
Disadvantages: Might be a bit too quiet for teenagers etc.

I've been to Kefalonia three times, most recently in 1999, and have booked again for 2001. My partner Jayne and I have been to various other Greek islands, but Kefalonia is our favourite and the one we keep going back to. We stay in a resort called Lourdas, on the south-west of the island, and I recommend this for anyone wanting a peaceful, tranquil beach holiday. Unlike many other parts of Greece Lourdas has not been spoiled by over-development, ...
...more leisurely manner. Driving in Kefalonia really isn't too bad once you get used to it - there are no roundabouts, and little other traffic on the roads. Finally, if you go to Lourdas, say hello to Thanos at the Diamond for me! He may not be the greatest chef in Greece, but he brews the meanest home-made wine! ...

A paradise in Europe, without the cost!

Advantages: Absolutely stunning, still relatively untouched
Disadvantages: A hilly island, possibly not appreciated by car, so I feel walking is necessary

...boyfriend and I travelled to Kefalonia during May 2000, the same time Captain Correli’s Mandolin was being filmed there. We travelled with Airtours, on a last minute, allocation on arrival deal. This meant we paid £179 for two weeks there, and we were extremely lucky. Staying in the resort of Lourdas, this proved to be an idyllic setting – breathtaking mountain scenery on one side, with crystal clear beaches on the other. Most travel agents now provide ...
...I feel you go to Kefalonia to get away from the touristy feel of Europe. The food available in Kefalonia is stunning – you must have the typical Greek mezes (combined starter) to really get a feel of what this part of Europe is like. The seafood, not surprisingly, is also stunning, with many huts by the beach doing fresh (just out the sea) snack plates. Meat is also good here, and the pudding to have is baklava – a sweet pastry dish. Many restaurants ...

A lovely relaxing holiday

Advantages: Friendly people, good food, picturesque scenery
Disadvantages: Need a car to explore, buses infrequent

...quite a few hills. Kefalonia is very mountainous and much greener than most Greek islands, and the houses look well kept on the whole. There are lots of prettily coloured houses and hotels, giving the place a very attractive look. Skala is not much more than a small village, but there are a good many restaurants and bars. If you want a buzzing nightlife then don't go there, a good meal and a few drinks is what you will find every evening. Fortunately ...
...Skala is fine, coarse sand, but shingle at the water's edge. If you like to swim a lot, then invest in some rubber beach shoes, you'll find it a lot easier to get into the water. It shelves quite deeply a few yards in, and there are fishes swimming in the shallows . We saw a man feeding them with bread, and they were crowding round him, and jumping for the food. It is a Blue Flag beach so it is clean and has a few beach bars and tavernas along the ...

5 things to do in............Kefalonia

Advantages: beautiful island that makes for an enjoyable holiday
Disadvantages: None

5 things to do in……….Kefalonia 1. The Argostoli- Lixouri ferry. This inexpensive ferry takes tourists and locals alike across the stretch of water separating the former and new capitals of the island. The journey takes about 30 minutes in total but the distance is just enough and the ferry just about big enough for it to feel like an adventure. Lixouri is a sleepy sort of place and there isn’t really a lot to see and do, ...
...lunch in one of the tavernas on the town square and then catching the boat back home. 2. Fiskardo- This charming venetian village on the north tip of the island is definitely the prettiest settlement on the island. Colourful and full of character tavernas line the harbour sprinkled with tourists enjoying their lunch whilst watching the yachts come in and listening to the gentle waves lap against the shore. Although Fiskado doesn’t have a beach ...

Advantages: Quiet, Unspoiled, Cheap
Disadvantages: Mosquitos prevalent, Crazy local drivers!

...This was a fabulous holiday. Kefalonia is relatively new to the tourist scene and as such is more or less unspoilt (visit while you can). We wanted basic accommodation for a reasonable price which we definitely found with the Marietta Apartments - the staff were friendly, the rooms clean and the facilities perfectly adequate for self-catering. Would definitely recommend staying here if you are looking for a base from which to explore, but if you ...

Kefalonia Heaven!

Advantages: Great climate, peaceful, stunning scenery.
Disadvantages: Choice of hotels limited.

Last June my wife and I visited this beautiful island in the Ionian group. We spent a week in Scala in the south of the island. When visiting Kefalonia, a must is to hire a car. You can see virtually the whole island in 2 or 3 days. You will see a beautiful coastline dotted with some of the prettiest bays and beaches in the greek islands. Although mainly pebbles there are several sandy beaches to enjoy. Have a chat to your car rental agent on the ...
...on the best places to visit. We drove anti-clockwise round the island from our base in Scala visiting many tranquil villages along the way and taking in the spectacular scenery of fir-lined mountains and hills. On the west coast is the town of Sami where Captain Corelli's Mandolin was filmed. From there we drove northwards and across to the east coast to visit the most stunning bay outside the Indian Ocean! This is Myrtos Bay. The sea here is a ...
