Advantages Advantages Friendly, peaceful, scenic, excellent value

Disadvantages Disadvantages Might be a bit too quiet for teenagers etc.

I've been to Kefalonia three times, most recently in 1999, and have booked again for 2001. My partner Jayne and I have been to various other Greek islands, but Kefalonia is our favourite and the one we keep going back to. We stay in a resort called Lourdas, on the south-west of the island, and I recommend this for anyone wanting a peaceful, tranquil beach holiday. Unlike many other parts of Greece Lourdas has not been spoiled by over-development, and the people are friendly and welcoming. There are some wonderful tavernas where you can watch the sun go down over a glass of retsina, and ... more

Advantages Advantages Absolutely stunning, still relatively untouched

Disadvantages Disadvantages A hilly island, possibly not appreciated by car, so I feel walking is necessary

HOW TO GET THERE My boyfriend and I travelled to Kefalonia during May 2000, the same time Captain Correli’s Mandolin was being filmed there. We travelled with Airtours, on a last minute, allocation on arrival deal. This meant we paid £179 for two weeks there, and we were extremely lucky. Staying in the resort of Lourdas, this proved to be an idyllic setting – breathtaking mountain scenery on one side, with crystal clear beaches on the other. Most travel agents now provide holidays to Kefalonia, it’s tourism growing by 200% after the release of the film. ACCOMMODATION and FOOD AND DRINK All ... more

Advantages Advantages Friendly people, good food, picturesque scenery

Disadvantages Disadvantages Need a car to explore, buses infrequent

Just returned from two weeks in Skala. The weather was hot, hot, hot, between 95 and 100 F every day. We stayed at the Nirithes Apartments, a small place with a very attractive pool area, and spacious rooms, which was at the top of the village, and then up a further steep slope. The island is not really suitable for people with walking difficulties as there are quite a few hills. Kefalonia is very mountainous and much greener than most Greek islands, and the houses look well kept on the whole. There are lots of prettily coloured houses and hotels, giving the place a very attractive look. Skala ... more

Advantages Advantages beautiful island that makes for an enjoyable holiday

    Disadvantages Disadvantages None

5 things to do in……….Kefalonia 1. The Argostoli- Lixouri ferry. This inexpensive ferry takes tourists and locals alike across the stretch of water separating the former and new capitals of the island. The journey takes about 30 minutes in total but the distance is just enough and the ferry just about big enough for it to feel like an adventure. Lixouri is a sleepy sort of place and there isn’t really a lot to see and do, so I would suggest simply enjoying a relaxing coffee or lunch in one of the tavernas on the town square and then catching the boat back home. 2 ... more

    Advantages Advantages Quiet, Unspoiled, Cheap

Disadvantages Disadvantages Mosquitos prevalent, Crazy local drivers!

1 week for two, self-catering, Kefalonia. This was a fabulous holiday. Kefalonia is relatively new to the tourist scene and as such is more or less unspoilt (visit while you can). We wanted basic accommodation for a reasonable price which we definitely found with the Marietta Apartments - the staff were friendly, the rooms clean and the facilities perfectly adequate for self-catering. Would definitely recommend staying here if you are looking for a base from which to explore, but if you are a stay-in-the-hotel-by-the-pool-all-day type, look for something a little more livelily. Skala itself is ... more

Advantages Advantages Great climate, peaceful, stunning scenery.

Disadvantages Disadvantages Choice of hotels limited.

Last June my wife and I visited this beautiful island in the Ionian group. We spent a week in Scala in the south of the island. When visiting Kefalonia, a must is to hire a car. You can see virtually the whole island in 2 or 3 days. You will see a beautiful coastline dotted with some of the prettiest bays and beaches in the greek islands. Although mainly pebbles there are several sandy beaches to enjoy. Have a chat to your car rental agent on the island as they are very helpful and will advise you on the best places to visit. We drove anti-clockwise round the island from our base in Scala ... more

Advantages Advantages scenery, peace and quiet, no lager louts, Heaven!

    Disadvantages Disadvantages none

I visited Kefalonia in August 2003, with my daughter and 2 grandchildren. The only mistake, if it could be called that, was to go at the hottest time of the year. It was scorching! For the first time ever, we had booked at the last minute, so were rather worried when we couldn`t find our accommodation, or destination, in any brochure. Then we thought, what the heck, it`ll be an adventure. On the coach from the airport, we were told that everyone would be dropped off at their accommodation, except for the ones who were going to Mounda Beach. That was us. Ithought "Uh-Oh, here we go holiday from ... more

Advantages Advantages Too many to mention!

Disadvantages Disadvantages Airport is slightly small!

I have visited Kefalonia 6 times over the years and would love to visit every year if possible. When you arrive at the airport and first step off the plane, and feel the heat, and see the sea and sunshine - its a good feeling. For me it is like arriving home. Theres something about Kefalonia that makes me feel at ease and relaxed. I have always stayed in the resort of Skala as its quiet, and is near the beach. There are not too many nightclubs and all the restaurants serve greek food and also typical English food! I think that is a major plus for me that there is not too many nightclubs etc on ... more

Advantages Advantages Beautiful island, wonderful holiday!

Disadvantages Disadvantages Can't think of any!

My boyfriend and I went to Kefalonia last year with two friends (also a couple) and we all had an absolutely fantastic holiday. Before we went, we decided that we all wanted a relaxing holiday, but wanted somewhere that had enough for us to do in the evening - we're not interested in clubbing, but wanted good food and then a few drinks at night. We spent a week in Skala in Kefalonia and got exactly what we wanted - we had bed and breakfast at apartments called Tara Beach, which were fairly small rooms, but fine for a base - the pool and gardens there were excellent. Our apartments were across ... more
