KNOWSLEY SAFARI PARK
This animal park is situated near the M58 to the east of Liverpool and could be somewhat of a surprise to those not local to this part of North West England. Knowsley is actually a borough of what was Merseyside before one of our governments decided to start producing a plethora of unitary authorities in some counties but not others.
According to the owners, Knowsley Safari Park was opened in 1971 by the 18th Earl of Derby, ...

Advantages: Good fun with close up animals Disadvantages: Naughty naughty animals
I first went here when I was seven and have the leaflet to prove it with a nice photo of a lion on it. Bless. I had no memories of it at all other than I seemed to have the desire to go again which has stayed with me for 30 years. Last summer I went again, not knowing what to expect other than it sounds good. I could, I suppose, only be wrong.
Obviously, it would be weird if I went by myself but luckily, I have several hundred children by many ...

Advantages: Safari is great fun, educational, cheap day out. Disadvantages: Poor stop off attractions, poorly maintained facilities.
...on with a visit to Knowsley Safari Park. A place I had not been too since I was a wee lad myself. Situated just off Junction 2 of the M57, Knowsley Safari Park is very easy to find if you are coming either from Liverpool or from Manchester and well signposted. Driving through the large metal gates and being told to, "shut our windows and not leave the car" I am reminded very much of Jurassic Park although the "toll booth" entrances are more like the ...

Advantages: Loads To Do, Cheap, Full Day Out Disadvantages: Slight Risk of Damage if You don@t take safe route.
We decided to go to Knowsley Safari Park near Liverpool on Saturday. It is a great day out but I would advise you to make sure you have plenty of drinks because being a safari park, you have to keep your windows closed and on hot days, with two or more people in the car it can get very, very warm.
Getting There
***********
Getting there is easy, start by heading for Liverpool on the M62 but come off at Junction 6 on to the M57. Turn off at ...

Advantages: Fabulous Day Out Disadvantages: The baboons might rip your car apart
...in the middle of the Knowsley estate wondering where the animals are!
The first ones we came across were the Rhea (I later discovered) ... being a mere town dweller with no experience of the wilds, we thought they were osteriches! Well they were big, had boney legs and long necks!
A slow drive to enjoy the scenery took us through a range of deer and various forms of antelope, the occasional car stopped in front of us to admire things, but ...

Knowsley Safari Park is located off junction 2 of the M57, about eight miles from Liverpool City Centre.
The Safari Park was opened in July 1971 by the eighteenth Earl of Derby, however, animals were not new to the Knowsley estate as Edward Lord Stanley, the thirteenth Earl of Derby, kept a large private zoo here more than one hundred and fifty years ago – covering about 100 acres, it was ranked as one of the largest zoos in the world at ...
