Advantages Advantages Crystal blue waters, white sands, shops

Disadvantages Disadvantages Not for the culture-seekers...

I will start by admitting that Koh Samui is one of the more touristy islands of Thailand, and that we have seen more naturally stunning and more cultural places... it’s main attraction being white sandy beaches and relaxation for the likes of sun dogs like us. Still, it is definitely worth visiting once you have had your fill of culture and just want to relax in the sun with a coconut shake and sun lotion by your side. Many places in Thailand are suited for the long-haul traveller and may offer more cultural delights, but for those who havent’t got the time, Samui is much nicer than Phuket or ... more

Advantages Advantages Hotter than home, tropical setting, something for everyone

Disadvantages Disadvantages Expensive (for Thailand), crowds in peak season

…. then go to Koh Samui. Which is where I was fortunate enough to be this time last year for a week. After eight and a half years together, Tom and I thai’ed the knot, surrounded by our friends and family, on the beach. It was sweltering (April is the hottest month on the island but our travel dates were constrained by work commitments – it’s better weather-wise to go February time or the summer) but a truly unforgettable day…. …. time to stop reminiscing as this review is about the island, not my wedding ( website: www.tomandlinzwedding.info). So why go to Koh Samui? For time-rich, money-poor ... more

Advantages Advantages big, choice of accomodation

    Disadvantages Disadvantages commercilaised,

Being a Backpacker, I'd heard a lot about Samui, it being relatively famous on the Asia scene for the past 20 Years, so i thought i'd see what all the fuss was about. I got there via ferry from the mainland.I bought a combi ticket in Bangkok which took me down there by night bus and then the vehicle ferry across from Don Sak. There are numerous ticket versions available with options also to get there by train and ferry. With the coach down, it is better to listen to other travellers advice on which company to choose from, as some are much better than others.I found the best way was to travel by ... more

Advantages Advantages Cheapish, convenient for backpackers, decent roads, great massages, solid nightlife

Disadvantages Disadvantages Poor diving, littered with tourists

My apologies to those who have read this before. Certain aspects of it were I now admit, rather crude making it unsuitable to have been posted on Ciao. Here’s the PG version. Having taken several holidays in Asia I’ve steadily become fascinated with the ‘backpacker vibe.’ Quite what the attraction is of strapping an unfashionably heavy bag on your back and a smaller but more important one onto your front and then spending the majority of your tiny budget on accommodation, travel and left luggage lockers, I’ve never quite managed to grasp. I managed to realise one thing completely when I went ... more

Advantages Advantages Still peaceful and relaxing

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Getting over developed

If you want to get away from 21st Century living for a while, then this is the place to go. Still Less developed than Phuket (READ UPDATE AT THE BOTTOM OF THIS OP); Samui still retains its natural beauty. Within the island lays coconut plantations, mini rainforests and exotic waterfalls. The sea/beaches are very clean and ideal for Scuba Diving etc. With all this it’s like being in a TV advert for a Bounty chocolate bar. Samui is quite distinctively different from other islands in Thailand. Samui’s scenery is made up from granite formations while Phuket, Phi, Phi etc are made from lime stone ... more

Advantages Advantages A pleasant and relaxing location.

Disadvantages Disadvantages Many hours flying from the UK.

As you disembark at Ko Samui airport you just know that this is going to be a wonderful holiday. Palm trees, no red tape and friendly staff all serve to reinforce that opinion. We were booked in at the Chaweng Blue Lagoon and after 24 hours of traveling since leaving home, we were really keen to get checked in. The manager met us and put us in a taxi before dropping the bombshell that the hotel was overbooked and we would have to spend the first night in another hotel. She assured us that it would be of similar class but I was immediately hostile to the idea. When we arrived at the Mercure ... more

Advantages Advantages Beautiful beaches, great food and friendly people

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Over-crowding

My husband and I visited Samui as part of our honeymoon in February 2000. We booked with Kuoni and the whle trip was wonderfully smooth and unproblematic. We stayed at the Imperial Samui on Chaweng beach. Being our honeymoon, we were upgraded to a superior room with champagne and fruiit on arrival as well as heart shaped pillows on the bed. The room itself was beautiful and spacious with a fabulous bacony and a well appointed bathroom. The hotel was highly luxurious and we found the staff to be friendly and courteous. The facilities were excellent with 2 swimming pools (one saltwater one ... more

Advantages Advantages Relatively unspoiled, freindly, great value for money

    Disadvantages Disadvantages None, really

Arriving in Koh Samui after what seemed like a whole day's travel from Bangkok I did wonder if I had made the right decision. Hot, sticky and tired is not the best state of mind to arrive anywhere but I have to say that the first people we met made it all worth while. I knew from experience that the Thais are natural and gregarious but nothing prepared me for the welcome at our hotel and in the resort (Chaweng) generally. Yes, Chaweng is a little more commercial than I expected but compared to Patong (Phuket) or Pattaya it was charming and quiet. There are bars aplenty and, of course, lots of ... more

Its now possible to buy direct international flights to Ko Samui but mostly only from other asian countries flying with Bangkok Airways. For a trip from europe its easier to go direct to Phuket or Bangkok and then buy an onwards Bangkok Airways flight to Samui Airport. This the most comfortable option but also the most expensive. Overnight trains are OK, cheap and functional but you have to sleep. If you make too much noise the locals get very angry. There are various bus/ferry combo tickets which are by far the cheapest option but also are definately the most uncomfortable (especially the ... more

Here we go again with another review of Thailand. Samui is in the south of the country on the east coast on the Gulf of Thailand. If you want a map, message me and i will let you have the link as i am not allowed to post in this message I went to Samui last year with my sister and my Thai wife. We booked into a levely resort hotel called sand sea resort. 30 Quid a night for a room with a four poster bed cable tv and a bath that took five hours to fill up, yes it was that big, you could have got 8 people in there no problem. We were on the beach in Llamii (think that is spelt correctly) The ... more
