Courmayeur

Advantages: Great food and drink
Disadvantages: poor access to skiing

My partner and I were in Courmayeur a few years ago for a weeks skiing in March. Having flown to Turin we went up the Val d’Aosta on a bus, quite a pretty 3-hour drive with numerous tunnels. Considering recent events on the alternative route (Mont Blanc tunnel) this is the one to opt for. We stayed in the Hotel Berthod, a nice 2 star b & b, courtesy of Thomson’s Holidays. It's a family run place that's been owned by the same people for ...
...The rooms are traditional with private balconies and huge baths - always a big bonus when you're skiing, and there’s also a spa bath available in the basement. Thomson’s proved to be a good choice. The reps were the keenest and most fun of any of the companies we’ve skied with so far and the nights out they organised were worth the money. The village has plenty of lively pubs, such as Bar Roma which is very good at apres ski time, ...

Novice Skiier:Belle of the Plagne (Belle Plagne)

Advantages: beautifully scenic well maintained resort, suitable for all skiing/snowboarding levels of experience
Disadvantages: Expensive, Not suitable for those with walking difficulties

...the resort of Belle Plagne, La Plagne in the French Alps for a week which started 22nd January 2005. The tour operator for the trip was Neilson and it cost £350 for 7 days self catering in the 'Les Constellations - Themis' apartments, including return flights from Manchester to Lyon, and transfers. As this review is of the resort, I will not babble on with my comments of the tour operator or the accommodation, I will comment on my thoughts of Belle ...
...sits at 2000m within the La Plagne Resort in the French Alps. For the first three days of my trip, the snow constantly fell creating an awesome daily scenic view to my ski virgin eyes. However, with the wide areas of untouched powder snow, I am sure weathered skiiers appreciated the natural beauty of the resort also. I participated in the 6 day beginners ski school with 'ESF''. The ski school cost approx £200 including ski pass. The ski school instructor, ...

Ski La Plagne

Advantages: Loads
Disadvantages: ?

...partner and I skied at La Plagne for a week in April 1999. After attempting to fly to Lyon we were diverted to Grenoble due to fog so spent several hours sunbathing on the tarmac while we waited for transport to arrive. The transfer should only have been 2 hours but ended up being something like 4 as a result. This nearly did for us as we had massive hangovers due to spending Bank Holiday Friday in various Horley pubs, before departing from Gatwick. ...
...opportunities for good boarding at La Plagne, with lots of wide runs above the treeline. Aesthetically, La Plagne itself isn't very visually appealing with a lot of large, purpose built hotels. Les Coches is quite a pretty village though, in spite of being mostly purpose built itself. The bars in Les Coches were mostly dead, so I definitely wouldn't recommend it to anyone who likes to party, but this was end of the season and it might have been ...

Space Station La Plagne

Advantages: Learn here
Disadvantages: Peak times = peak crowds

Its virtually above the tree line, its quite ugly, but its about the best place in Europe to learn to ski. A great ski school with the most steriotypical Ecole du Ski ESF guys you will ever meet. It could be a wind chill of -50 and they will still be there with just a pair of ray-bans and a ski band. How do they smoke a fag and ski at the same time? Can get very crowded, esp. at the main lift stations. Belle Plagne quite nice, but no night life. ...
...you want to know what altitude sickness feels like, then go up to the glacier and take the chair lift to the left. Great view of the whole planet from up there - one of the best around. So overal, a great place to catch the skiing / boarding bug. Don't go at peak times and make sure that if you go to Belle Plagne, that you buy a little sled and slide down to the town lower in the valley - if you've had enough vino you won't notice the last lift ...

La Plagne can be cheap

Advantages: great ski area, really cheap
Disadvantages: no nightlife

I visited La Plagne in January 2001, what a fantastic ski area! Like a lot of French ski resorts that are popular with Brits La Plagne can be expensive to get to from the UK when using the normal tour operators. Stop! The tourist office is wonderfully helpful, (laplagne.com), and they speak good English if you need to phone them. The best price I was offered came to £340 for two people sharing a studio appartment and two 6day ski passes. Throw in ...
...for only £100 all in, and you've got a holiday in a top ski resort at basement prices. Plus, because of Ryanair's flight schedule, you can ski on the last Saturday aswell (or go shopping in St Etienne for the day - very cheap, great bars & cafes). Only drawback? Absolutely no apres-ski and next to no nightlife. But if that's what you're after, go to Austria! ...

A great place to learn

Advantages: Good skiing
Disadvantages: Make sure you're in the right part of la Plagne

La Plagne's great - I've been there 3 times now. - The nightlife isn't as good as at Val d'Isere or Meribel, but there are enough bars to keep you going. - There's a reasonable chance of getting ski-in, ski-out. - The shops aren't bad. - Skiing there is great - the area is huge and there are plenty of runs for all abilities. If you are interested in going out in the evening, make sure you're in Plagne Centre. - Plagne 1300 is low (so even if you ...
