Advantages: Lovely town, Lots to do, great weather and many more. Disadvantages: Some attractions not open until April
...Paris, Stockholm… and last week, La Rochelle.
Well, I guess this is not a destination everyone has heard of. The reason I chose it is… well, let's be honnest, is because the flight was cheap. 1 penny on Ryanair, and once taxes are added, the flight costs only £15. So that's right: £30 return; that was quite tempting. The other reason was I wanted to fly back from another destination, close to La Rochelle -Poitiers- which I will mention very soon ... ...business. What's La Rochelle?

Advantages: Easy to get to, plenty to see, relatively unknown destination within France Disadvantages: Gets very busy in summer
For years, La Rochelle was a place only known to me from hours spent poring over the 'Tricolore' workbook in French class at school. For some reason, most of the people featured in that book were residents of this port on the Atlantic coast, and it has stuck in my mind ever since. However, La Rochelle was added to Ryanair's ever-growing list of French destinations a few years ago, which (coupled with the steady stream of British tourists and emigrants ... ...from the capital city, and La Rochelle is also easily reached by car, with good road connections leading to the A10 and A83 motorways. The town itself has a few sights to offer, and I can recommend taking a stroll around the Vieux Port to see the three famous towers that guard the old harbour. It is possible to climb the steps inside the towers for some great views across the port district and the town centre, and there are plenty of restaurants ...

Advantages: Plenty to do Disadvantages: Expensive shopping
La Rochelle is a town on the West Coast of France. It is a large harbour town, and at one point in its history it was the largest harbour in France. We visited La Rochelle twice during our stay in France, one day was spent in the Aquarium which I have reviewed separately, and one day was spent around the market and the harbour. Driving into the town is relatively simple, the car parks are well signposted, and we decided to park right on the harbour ... ...things), and the view over La Rochelle was amazing. We actually thought we’d reached the top, until one of the kids shouted down from higher up. So after doing a full circuit of that terrace we eventually found the entrance to the top level, and if the view from the terrace below was great, the one from the top was amazing, you could see right across the bay and right across the town. They had installed a telescope at the top, but it wasn’t very ...

Advantages: pretty french town Disadvantages: not the place its made to be
La Rochelle is a relatively big town in France on the East coast. I was told lots about La Rochelle, how it was really great and a must visit, but when i arrived i was slightly disappointed.
As with any place you visit, there is always places to see and things to do and explore, but the hype of La Rochelle gave me great expectations which it did not meet. I stayed in La Rochelle for a week, as with everywhere i have visited, i camped. The site was ... ...busy.
The centre of La Rochelle was actually quite big with lots of shops, both touristy (souveniers) and local shops. You could pretty much buy everything you would need in the town, clothes, food etc.
Eating out in La Rochelle was relatively cheap, about 17 euros for a meal, £10-12. Drinking was extremely cheap if you buy it from the supermarket, £2 for 24 bottles of local lager, but if you go out and about it cost about 3-4euros, £2-2.50 for ...

Advantages: Free bike hire Disadvantages: Need a car to get around
I flew to La Rochelle last year, for a week in August. In my seven days, I didn't really visit many places - but I stayed in La Rochelle quite a lot.
Where we stayed:
At the south of La Rochelle is Les Minimes, the world's largest marina. I stayed there in a hotel called "Fast Hotel", a 2* 50€ per night place. The room was tiny, floor filthy and breakfast was expensive.
Transport:
You can get to La Rochelle by plane, train, car or boat.
Train: ... ...Now from Birmingham.
Around La Rochelle you can hire a bike or a car.
Bikes: Free for 2 hours then 2€ an hour after. They take your passport (or national ID card) as a refundable deposit. The state of the bikes is terrible and the people aren't very helpful if you don't speak much French.
Car: It's quite easy to drive until you get into the main town where there are people everywhere! Remember to drive on the right of the road!
The Airport:

Advantages: Great shopping, beautiful old town and harbour area Disadvantages: Harbourside restaurants to be avoided
This lovely old town and harbour is spoilt by a few bad restaurants lining the quayside. If you avoid these and head away from the obvious tourist traps selling Moules and chips then there are some great places to eat. The shopping is wonderful - from top designer names to chain stores - they are all here and its much easier to get around than Paris. The summer sales offer great bargains as the prices are cheaper than UK. At the height of the season, ...
