Leeds- What an experience!

Advantages: Shopping, Drinking and Shopping
Disadvantages: Same problems any city has!

...Nast Traveller- the City of Leeds has been voted the UK's favourite city. The Yorkshire city left London trailing. The Lonely Planet guide recently dubbed Leeds the "Knightsbridge of the North". ~History~ Leeds began as a Saxon village. The little town probably had a population of around 1,000 people. In the 16th century things began to change. It became the centre of the wool industry and the little Saxon village grew! By the 17th century, Leeds ...
...Now, in the 21st century, Leeds continues to grow and become a sparkling gem in England’s growing economy! ~What is there to do in Leeds?~ #1 Shop, shop and shop again! Leeds has 5 covered shopping arcades- Grand, Queens, Thorntons, Victoria Quarter and Market . These beautiful gems from days gone by have been loving preserved and make for a day out just to look at the architecture. However, they also house a treasure-trove of shopping opportunities. ...

A Grand Day Out

Advantages: Some excellent shopping , architecture, pubs , and friendly folk
Disadvantages: Some boring bits

...from a day out in Leeds and was not initially very impressed. It's not that Leeds is particularly bad, it's just that nothing seems to grab you, until you look a bit further . Maybe it was because I only had a day there, and was on foot, but my first couple of hours there left me about to give up on the place. However despite the huge amount of , for want of a better word, "adequacy" , in the city centre there are some gems to be found within walking ...
...~~ Why I Thought Leeds City Centre was only Adequate The City centre contains a lot of medium sized shopping malls, sort of "Arndale" centres , that seem to fall between two stools,. The seem to take up a lot of space , but not contain much that is interesting . There are all the usual suspects (HMV, Virgin, BHS , Mothercare etc), but its nothing you couldn't find elsewhere. You think, "I can get all this at home, so why bother coming to Leeds". ...

Shit hole

Advantages: Big, decent shopping, dcent night out
Disadvantages: Scruffy, snobbish, expensive, granary wharf, that whole side of town

...Admittedly, credit where credit's due, Leeds is extremely good for shopping. The centre is about five times as big as Bradford with about 2/3 of that being used for the main shopping area. That 2/3 is absolutely fine, there are specialist shops, "oddity" shops in the arcades, selective shops, bargain shops and your common-a-garden high-street shops. Apart from the arcades, the vast majority of the stores are contained within "Arndale" type shopping ...
...now...). All in all though, Leeds Centre accounts for very pleasant shoppping. The bit I don't like though, is the remaining 1/3 and the areas as you move out of the city centre. Walk towards where the Granary Wharf is. Over that way is loads of rough ground used as makeshift car parks, grotty railway tunnels and the "widely acclaimed" Granary Wharf. The rough ground and all that is just a waste of perfect;y good ground that could be used very well ...

Honeymoon hotel disaster

Advantages: Leisure complex, off the tourist route
Disadvantages: Staff seemed uninterested in the guests

After her wedding in early April, my daughter and her new husband decided to take a few days honeymoon in a quiet location away from all tourists and holiday makers (they both work in the tourist industry). Following an extensive search they plumped for four nights in a suite in a five-star luxury hotel outside Leeds, the De Vere Oulton Hall hotel. The agent made a point of explaining to the hotel that this was a special holiday. When they arrived ...
...they were told that because the room was not ready, they should go away and come back later!!!!!! Room service delivered incorrect meals, breakfast was sent up with no cutlery and was cold by the time they had themselves collected some from the dining room, bathrobes were torn and needed mending, carpet gripper strips were exposed near the windows............. .......... the honeymoon couple came home after only three nights. Do you blame them? ...

Forget London, Come To Leeds

Advantages: Good shopping, Loads to do
Disadvantages: None

...vibrant city, come to Leeds. Leeds has everything; Designer shops, the finest eateries, theatres, galleries, museums, universities; Leeds is the greatest. The Capital of the North of England. It also has one of the country's finest foot ball teams (well according to my hubby it has). Leeds is the fourth largest growing city in the country and hosts it's own radio station, Aire.fm. Home also to Yorkshire County Cricket club, at Headingley. It also ...
...night clubs, cinemas and theatres. Leeds is also home to the Harvey Nichols store. The only branch outside of London, where, if you cannot afford a fiver for a cup of coffee you can stand outside and blow rasperries at teh security guards and giggle at the ritch bitches who go in and out. Come to Leeds - you'll love it! ...

Leeds - Thackray Medical Museum

Advantages: Light, easy going, educational and cheap
Disadvantages: Parking prices can be steep

...to St. James Hospital in Leeds come and see the history of medical practice at Thackray Medical Museum. Very well priced it deals with all aspects of medical procedure throughout the ages, covering diagnosis, treatment, surgery and rounds off with a journey through the human body which you can walk inside. Better value and closer for me than the Bodyworks exhibition at the Dome, and still going to be open in 2001. This is a very well laid out ...
