...and what a holiday on Lesvos can or could include. Readers of my previous travel reviews know I am an avid fan of Greece and its numerous islands. Here we are going to explore Lesvos, or Lesbos as it sometimes called. Let the story begin………..
The volume increased as we climbed higher and higher. The ground giving way to white and grey visual explosions of cloud, littered with glimpses of brown and green squares dotted with lines that were only a ... ...latter seem non-existent all over Lesvos except in the major towns and there are less than a handful of those. One cobbled main street dominates Molyvos with the usual restaurants, trinket and tourist shops. Other paths and staircases lead down to beachside bars, the beach, and very picturesque harbour. Old cobbled streets lead upwards in a steep incline to the Molyvos marketplace with some unusual shops and galleries. Parking in the daytime and ...

Advantages: beautiful village, warm Disadvantages: Have to fly to get there
I visit my sister and her husband twice a year in Eressos, Lesvos. It is a place of dusty tracks and donkeys, sunshine and blue skies (usually!) Eressos is situated at the opposite side of the island to Mytilene airport, a 3 to 4 hour flight from Manchester. The distance is approximately 52 miles, less than one hour on our roads, easily two hours on the twisting mountain roads of the island. The landscape during tourist season, between May and October ... ...dotted with small white buildings and clusters of olive trees.
Eressos itself is in two parts, the winter village nestled in the hillside a mile or so from the sea, and Skala Eressos, the resort village where the tourists are to be found.
I have not yet seen the village busy, though I’m told it does happen. There is an abundance of taverna’s and restaurants along the seafront where meals of all descriptions may be bought at a fraction of the prices ...

Advantages: Peaceful , traditional and the 'real' Greece Disadvantages: Perhaps too quiet for some , windey scary roads!
...in the far north-west of Lesvos within an area of outstanding natural beauty. We chose it because the description in the Direct Greece brochure stated that it is "...peaceful, simple and unhurried..." and that is exactly what we found. The journey from the airport took about two and a half hours late at night and when we arrived all was dark and quiet, we were led to our accomodation up windey cobbled streets. Once we arrived there (Sigri Studios) ... ...we visited was Skala Sikamia with its harbour and whitewashed church of the Virgin Mary Mermaid. It is down a very steep road but well worth it.
On the whole we would certainly return to Lesvos we found it extremely traditional and unspoiled with masses of contrasting natural history . ...

Advantages: Beautiful women Disadvantages: I had to come back to work!
Lesvos is the home of the poet Sappho and now a pilgrimage for lesbians all around the world. Skala Eresos is a small and beautiful Greek village stretching along a dark sandy beach and crystal clear waters. The villagers are very accommodating towards the many women that visit - as it provides them with their livelihood more than anything.
It is a very laid back village - all music must be turned off by 1am and there is no nightclub. However, there ...
Advantages: Friendly, safe and family orientated resort Disadvantages: None that would put me off going again.
...week in Skala Kalloni in Lesvos and wanted to let everyone know what a wonderful place it is! We have a two year old daughter and our list of must haves included either a childrens pool or a safe shallow beach, apartment or hotel withing a 5 minute walk of beach, a couple of shops to buy any provisions we might need, and a selection of tavernas for dinner. We didn't want lots of noisy nightlife!
The transfer from the airport to the resort took about ... ...told us lots about the island.
Skala Kalloni fitted all of our requirements completely. We stayed at the Arisvi apartments which are bookable through Manos. Our apartment had a bedroom, lounge (which had two put up beds) a small kitchen with 2 ring hob, kettle, fridge and sink, and a shower room. It was clean and typically greek, the owner Christina speaks excellent English and was very helpful. To get to the beach was a doddle as it was literally ...

Advantages: Hot, friendly, cheap Disadvantages: You have to come home
...little resort of Anaxos in Lesvos (June 2004). Despite reservations about what the resort was going to be like we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.
Anaxos itself is fairly quiet - there's just a sprinkling of bars and restaurants on the beachfront. We ate out every night and, aside from one dodgy experience, we didn't have a bad meal. Average cost for a meal with wine was £15 which we all thought was very reasonable. Other places that we have been to ... ...seems that Lesvos is trying to keep it's prices reasonable. The resort is very much focused towards tourists and relaxation. You can walk along the beach to the next village, Petra, but beware that your feet will almost definitely get wet.
We found all the people that we met to be welcoming, even with the language barrier (couldn't get the hang of that alphabet). It was generally greatly appreciated if you took the time to learn how to say 'hello' ...

Advantages: Great for a quiet, relaxing break. Great people and scenery Disadvantages: Coming back! ("if you don't leave you can't come back!")
These luxury apartments are currently available through Kosmar. (CG 10 rooms, Eleft 10 rooms) These new, spacious, well equipped studio/apartments feature air-conditioning (payable locally), tv, phone, balconys, wc, kitchen are are spotlessly maintained. They are run by the owner Iggy and his wife Antonina and his 2 daughters who also run the bar (inc. food) and the (spotless) pool area. The bar area is a really good meeting point before going out ... ...real testiment to just how good this accomodation really is, is the amount of returning customers who re-visit every year, some more than once! (I have been visiting 3 times a year for 8 years, each time making new friends!) The beach is about a 5 min walk and the town of Anaxos features many bars, restaurants and small shops. Petra and Molyvos are a short distance away and can be reached by the local bus service. I managed to find details atwww.christinasgarden.co.uk ...
