Advantages Advantages Tasty food (honest!), hearty portions, long opening hours, generally welcoming atmosphere

Disadvantages Disadvantages Expensive, service can be slow, not for those on a diet, fewer around than there used to be

My name is David, and I actively *like* eating at Little Chef restaurants, and find their "chubby chef" logo friendly and welcoming rather than the modern equivalent of a plague marker. I know that this will be a shocking confession to many of you, but bear with me if you would. I'm not going to try to convince anyone that this is the greatest chain of eateries on the planet, since it quite clearly is not - but I *am* going to make the case that some of the criticism the chain has come in for over the years is perhaps a little bit overdone. (Who said, "Like the steaks"?) The Little Chef brand ... more

Advantages Advantages Their breakfast offerings, good choice for vegetarians.

Disadvantages Disadvantages The chavvy customers, expensive food.

I have to admit to having a slight weakness for the Little Chef, mainly because when I am driving my little Mini on long road trips and having to fill her up every 3 hours or so due to her little fuel tank I invariably stop at a petrol chef with an adjoining Little Chef for a bacon bap and cup of coffee to keep me awake! As a child on long journeys we would often pop into a Little Chef (or a Happy Eater, remember those?!) and I would have a kids meal and one of those sickly lolly pops to take away with me. In the late 1980's/early 1990's the restaurants seemed to have a certain glamour despite ... more

Advantages Advantages Good, fresh food; usually good service; discount for RAC members

Disadvantages Disadvantages Not enough of them, don't publicise discount policys and changes thereof

UPDATES MOVED TO END I tend to travel quite a bit in both my business and personal life, and much to my partners annoyance love visiting Little Chefs. I must confess that the only meals I have ever eaten in them have been from their wonderful selection of 'All Day Breakfasts' and can honestly say that I have always found their food to be superb ( with the exception of one outlet - see below on locations). The food is always cooked fresh, and the service is generally good and quite speedy. I should imagine that their other meals are of a similar quality. In Leigh Delamare service station, they ... more

    Advantages Advantages Location

Disadvantages Disadvantages Food, rip off prices, surly staff

Feeling hungry & on a long journey in a strange area, you have little option but to put your faith in a motorway service station or a Little Chef. I stayed at a Travelodge at Washington services in the north east of England just south of Newcastle on a number of occasions & had the choice an overpriced Moto restaurant or an overpriced Little Chef; I chose the latter on a number of occasions for evening meals & breakfast. I have also used Little Chefs in Dumfries, Cramlington & Bristol. The menus looks good, prices are high but if the food is good I don't mind paying the extra. When you enter ... more

Advantages Advantages No other services between South London and Chelmsford

Disadvantages Disadvantages No other services between South London and Chelmsford

Once through the Dartford Tunnel it is a straight haul up the A12, to drive from London to East Anglia. However, there are no roadside cafes virtually from the moment you leave Catford all the way to Colchester. It was only when we reached the other side of the ancient roman and military town, two hours after leaving London, that we found anywhere to eat. Indeed, there are about 4 Little Chefs within 20 minutes drive of each other (that's East Anglian logic for you!) Last weekend we stopped at the nearest, although in the past we have sampled the second adn third in line respectively. Apart ... more

    Advantages Advantages Available everywhere

Disadvantages Disadvantages Hideously overpriced, poor service, terrible food

Yesterday (Sunday 9th July 2006) I had the dubious pleasure of visiting on of Little Chef's restaurants (near Morcott on the A47 between Leicester and Peterborough). I feel I must register my disgust at the service myself and my companions recieved in return for what I feel was a ludicrously expensive bill, given the circumstances. Around twenty minutes after placing our initial order in the little more than deserted restaurant, I was told that my order was unavailable because "the panini machine's just broke". After re- ordering it took a further ten minutes before we recieved what was ... more

Advantages Advantages Lots of food to choose from, fairly low prices, clean.

Disadvantages Disadvantages Average tasting food, sometimes service drops below satisfactory.

While staying at an adjoining Travelodge, I visited the Little Chef in Uttoxeter, for an evening meal and also breakfast the following morning. - APPEARANCE - Little Chefs can be spotted by the red and white logo (with a picture of a chef and the title 'LITTLE CHEF' underneath, amazingly). There are usually little chef logos along the roadside outside the restaurants so they can be easily seen. Inside, Little Chefs seem to have a standard interior design trhough the chain. The basic style is diner - red and white and quite simple. This gives a simplistic but cheerful look. - CUSTOMER SERVICE ... more

Advantages Advantages Improved menu, more comfortable seating, good service

    Disadvantages Disadvantages A litle expensive

It’s been a good while since I last set foot in a Little Chef restaurant, over a year in fact, until yesterday that is. I’d always remembered them as expensive places to eat, not particularly comfortable and with rather a bland café style menu and a long wait for your meal to arrive at your table. But yesterday I have to admit to being very pleasantly surprised! We visited the Little Chef just outside Thame, towards Oxford. There have been some major changes since I was last there, including the addition of a Burger King Drive-Thru right next door (hey Yhwman - I do have one closer ... more

    Advantages Advantages ermmmmm... none!

Disadvantages Disadvantages bad service and inedible food

I am not a fan of Little Chef restaurants due to a couple of bad experiences which I will tell you about here. The first was when visiting Little Chef at Doncaster when myself and my partner were staying overnight at the adjacent Travelodge. We were hungry and thought we'd give the Little Chef a try. It was early evening when we visited and apart from a couple of customers was virtually empty. We ordered two meals and drinks from the menu which arrived not long after. The meals themselves weren't too bad, although the chips were a bit bland and cardboard-like. However, as we began eating, one ... more

Can’t you just picture that little piece of heaven just off the Motorway called ‘Little Chef’. Succulent, tasty meals all reasonably priced. Somewhere to relax a while and break your journey. What would we do without them? Hey hold on a minute... – what am I saying? They’ve become an ‘institution’ at the side of the British roads. Little Chefs have been around for years. For a while challenged for supremacy by the ‘Happy Eater’ chain, but they beat them off and now reign supreme. But why do we use them? After all they are not like the ... more
