Advantages: Gorgeous setting, great service, great food Disadvantages: None... well, maybe the price!
...it appeared that place was Lumley Castle Hotel. Lumley Castle Hotel is a 14th Century Castle, named after its creator, Sir Ralph Lumley. It is situated in the town of Chester-le-Street, near Durham in Co. Durham and is situated very close to Durham Cricket Ground. The castle is owned by the earl of Scarborough but is managed as a hotel by No Ordinary Hotels. Booking the hotel was fairly easy. The hotel has a fairly comprehensive website giving details ... ...I chose the Knights of Lumley package which included a one night stay, including dinner for two, full English breakfast and a bottle of champagne. When finally the big day arrived, my husband was both surprised and shocked when I announced where we were going. The castle itself is really easy to find and it seemed very grand and imposing as we drove into the castle car park. Checking in was easy and the staff, who all dress in medieval costume, couldn't ...

Advantages: A lovely and unusual place to stay Disadvantages: Doesn't quite pull it off all the time
...out of the ordinary, then Lumley Castle is certainly worth a visit. It is situated very close to the A1 in Chester-le-Street in Co Durham. I say close, but you wouldn't know it was anywhere but in the middlie of the country. The approach to the castle is long, impressive and winding, and climbs up a hill. There is a cark park for guests just outside the caslte wall, and also some spaces in the courtyard. The reception is not well marked from the ... ...More details on the Lumley Castle website, which also has a good range of pricing packages available for the would-be guest.
Overall, we had a lovely stay at the castle. If you are looking for the genuine article, I wouldn't stay here. The surroundings are wonderful, but you get the feeling that most of the extras and designed to be what the public imagine a castle would be, rather than the real thing. Having said that, if you enter into the spirit ...

Advantages: A unique hotel Disadvantages: Can be noisy
Lumley Castle is located just off the A1(M) at Chester-le-Street near Durham in the North East of England and is part of the 'No Ordinary Hotels' Group. I stayed here with my husband for two nights in July 2005 as his little sister was getting married and the reception was here. There is the option of actually getting married in this castle but for a more atmospheric wedding I would recommend Dalhousie Castle in Edinburgh.

Finding the Castle was not difficult as the sign posting is very good. When you arrive and drive up to the Castle you will find parking located in the inner courtyard. To find this drive to the left ...

Advantages: Very Relaxing Disadvantages: Not much to do once there without driving.
better than expected, we only paid 59.00 with booking.com and stayed in room 7 in the courtyard but it was out of this world this is my idea of 5* very clean huge fluffy bath sheets. The room was very sumptuous with royal blue silk over the ceiling and dark large wooden furniture big comfy sofa and a bed to die for, they turn your bed down at night and leave note for you. We also had afternoon tea in the libray very cosy big open fires and a silver ... ...and tea. We wanted to book a murder meal but it was a private party.
