One Day In Luxor

Advantages: overwhelming
Disadvantages: none

...us from Frankfurt/Main directly to Luxor in Upper Egypt where we landed at 1 am the following morning due to a delay at departure, when we finally hit the hay it was 2 am! The view from the balcony of our hotel room some hours later rewarded us for the trouble: after winter-grey Germany eye-hurting, bright sunshine, palm trees on the bank of the Nile, cruisers and feluccas - Egyptian sailing-boats - on the glittering river! Why do tourists go to ...
...taken to the temple of Luxor 3 km away through an alleyway flanked by rows of sphinxes with the bodies of lions and the heads of rams - a short stretch of which can still be seen in Karnak. Simple folks were not allowed to enter the temples proper, the first forecourt was the farthest they could get. According to our Egyptian guide the site of the temple mirrored the area around Karnak, the main axis being the Nile, the columns, smaller temples, ...

...private island, 4 km from Luxor surrounded by the beautiful and clear River Nile. Prices at Portland Direct for the same two weeks Bed and Breakfast in May 2006 are £389 per adult and £327 for first child. Movenpick was founded in 1948 and employs 13,600 people around the world, it is a Swiss Hotel chain with 53 hotels in nineteen countries. The one we are going to was built in the early eighties. ...different Hotels around and in Luxor so we arrived 1hr 10 minutes later. While driving through Luxor you can spot quite a few Police and Army sentry points strategically placed and scattered all around the city quite comforting really as they are there mainly for us tourists. After dropping off all but seven of us we headed 4 km out of the city towards Crocodile Island we turned right from the main road and stopped at a checkpoint and within seconds ...

Luxor West Bank by taxi

Advantages: Independent travel
Disadvantages: No tour guide descriptions

...to recommend anyone travelling to Luxor to arrange themselves a trip around the Luxor West Bank using a local Luxor taxi. I have visited Egypt on 3 occasions now as a backpacker and the taxi trip to the west bank has always been one of the highlights for me. You really get to travel around not only at your leisure but in the company of a real local resident making himself a proper living. Your money will not be going to a tour company, it will be ...
...bridge to the south of Luxor and firstly stop at the ticket booth area. Tickets to all the West Bank attractions are bought at the same place. The driver will then take you to all of your choices and wait for you in the taxi rank at each spot. A quick note on West bank tickets. Like I said above, tickets to all West bank sites are bought at the same place which is on a junction spot just past the Colossi on Memnon . There are some intricacies to ...

Not for the Faint Hearted

Advantages: Hot Weather, History
Disadvantages: Hassle

...mum and I went to Luxor at the beginning of this year after getting a really good deal, we paid just over £300 for 7 nights half board accommodation with Cosmos staying at the St Joseph’s hotel. I have broken this review into sections and please bear in mind that is based only on my experiences. Anything that I have not covered please feel free to ask about and I will attempt to answer. HISTORY ********* As you are aware Egypt is full of ...
...Pyramids if you go to Luxor you will not see any Pyramids. However, most tour operators do organise trips to see the Pyramids as well as most of the sites which I mention below. A word of advice, before committing yourself to booking with your tour operator take time to go down towards the Old Winter Palace where you will find quite a few local tour operator’s who undercut the big tour operators quite substantially. For example a ½ day trip ...

Walk Like an EGYPTIAN

Advantages: Experience of a Lifetime
Disadvantages: Heat, Dust and Flies

Luxor is a must to visit if you enjoy sight-seeing holidays, also if you have any interest in Egyptology, this is the place for you. In order to visit such a beautiful country you will require a Visa, purchased from the Egyptian embassy in London. You will need to send your passport to London and they will send you your passport via the post stamped and ready to go, for around £10 to £20 quid. (It was in 1999 when I visited, prices may have changed) ...
...very quickly, and enjoy what Luxor has to offer. The majority of hotels are close together. with in walking distance of one another, they are clean and airy, friendly staff are eager to help and are very pleasent. I wondered if this was to ensure that they got a bashees,(tip) when your stay was over. I stayed at the Winter Palace Hotel which over looks the Nile. This hotel I would give a five star rating to, for its cleanliness and service. As ...

Luxor for 2 weeks

Advantages: Good base for the must- see sights
Disadvantages: Constant hassle from the locals

...husband and I went to Luxor for our honeymoon. We chose it as it was so central to the majority of the must-see sights that Egypt is famous for. Luxor is really a one street town. This street runs the length of the town and most of the major hotels are situated on it. The Sheraton at one end, the Hilton at the other. We stayed in the Hilton. This is at the very end of the road and a 5 minute bus journey from the center of town. First piece of advise: ...
...being stuck out in the Luxor sun, we learned the hard way! We went with Thomas Cook and booked our excursions with them. This was a good move as there aren't really any shops that you can go in and book excursions. If your hotel offers this, best to take them up on it. The essential trips are: West Bank, Karnak [both during the day and at night], Cairo and the Banquet night. Things like the Luxor Museum and Luxor Temple you can comfortable do on ...

Honeymoon in Luxor

Advantages: Good bargains and a lot to do
Disadvantages: The museums are too expensive

...I spent 2 weeks in Luxor for our honeymoon. It was our first time in Egypt and the first time my husband had visited an Arab country. We stayed in a small, family run hotel called the St Joseph. It was very friendly and all the holidaymakers staying there got to know each other so the atmosphere was really good. The hotel provided entertainment most evenings which was just as well because there wasn't much going on at nights in Luxor. I loved Luxor ...
...all our Christmas gifts in Luxor because of the price and the opportunity to pick up some unusual presents for friends. We found a shop in the back streets of Luxor that sold good quality football shirts for around £8. We picked up ones for Mexico, Morocco and an Egyptian one as well. The Arabs are really nice people but expect to be hassled when you wander round the markets and shops. This kind of hassle didn't bother us much, however, we were slightly ...

LUXOR....BUT ITS NOT PAINFUL

Advantages: Climate, Friendly People
Disadvantages: None

...We landed at Luxor airport at approx 21.30 local time (+2 GMT) and as it’s a developing airport we were bussed to the terminal, which is basically an over sized marquee placed in the desert! As soon as we left the plane the warm air hit us, not muggy but dry heat. On leaving the airport be prepared to have loose change with you for tipping the locals who place your case on the bus, they are not employed by the tour companies but they do it anyway, ...

Things you won't get told on an organised tour...

...venture into the heart of Luxor and very rarely did I see any of these tourists in the abundance of excellent Egyptian restaurants. Being ferried around is all well and good, but if you are visiting a country, surely it is better to see it for what it really is? I visited Egypt for a total of three and a half weeks, starting in Cairo and then travelling by train to Luxor, then Aswan. The trains in Egypt are an untapped resource for the package ...
...UK! The hotels in Luxor are another resource that the budding traveller can mine to their benefit. If you have the money, then by all means stay at the Old Winter Palace. However, if you want a bit more adventure but still be extremely comfortable, try a hotel such as The Nefertiti, just over the road from The Luxor Temple. Contrary to popular belief, everything in Egypt can be haggled for. We managed to bring down the price of our 3 bed room from ...

...We also went to Luxor temple and The Sound and Light Show at Karnack Temple. I think Karnack Temple along with the Valley of the Kings and Queens was the highlight of the trip. The monuments were massive, breathtakingand the atmosphere was that of spiritual as if time had stopped an awesome feeling. The whole thing was like being taken back to Bible times with donkeys carrying the sugar beet etc. I have had quite a few holidays since, but nothing ...

The aggravation from the sellers was awful they were at you all the time you couldnt go anywhere or do anything without someone springing out at you trying to sell their wares. We tried to be as nice as possible but in the end found ourselves getting quite annoyed because they were so persistent. However of course there is great poverty ...

If you do the trip to the West Bank, take in the Workers Village, where the people who cut the Valley of the Kings tombs are buried, it's more interesting than the Valley of the Queens & gives a great insight into the workers that created the history that we all still want to visit to this day. We only went for a ...

History and modern life in one

Advantages: great location, mix of history and modern life
Disadvantages: hassle from street vendors

Luxor is a lovely place to stay in, itself a vibrant Egyptian city containing two temples (Luxor and Karnak) and with the Valley of the Kings and Valley of the Queens located only a few kilometres away on the other side of the Nile, it offers plenty of historical sightseeing as well a chance to sample modern Egyptian life. All the hotels are either situated in the city centre, or just outside it. Those outside it have the advantage of being on the ...
...on your own – the Luxor museum is well worth a visit. The tour operators no longer recommend riding in a “kalesh”, a pony driven cart, as some people have had bad experiences, however we didn’t have any problems with the one journey we took. It is easier by taxi though, as the hotel should have a rough price list as a guide to what you should be paying for each journey. You will find lots of people constantly offering to ...

helpful hints Luxor after 12 visits

Advantages: Hotels, weather, people,tombs, temples
Disadvantages: Taxi drivers

I have been 12 times and can give you some good tips for your holiday.Hotels - hilton:lovely but far out, peaceful situation in the countryside at the side of the Nile. Movenpicke - best for families with children - great walks, felucca trips and bird watching. Sheraton - busy noisy pool with cruise ships belching out fumes when tied up there. Sonesta - very flash, small pool, rooms on road side very noisy.Winter palace - delightful but the tower ...

Book flight only and find Egyptian travel agents on the web to get much better value rooms. Avoid Cruises unless you want to be herded like sheep and sunbathe by a postage-stamp pool. Get a train or bus to Aswan and cruise on your own felucca for about £7 for half a day. Be adventurous and arrange you own excursions and visits in cheap ...

A relaxing place to do some exploring

Advantages: Get to learn alot
Disadvantages: Not much nightlife

Luxor is a brilliant place to relax and to get the chance to see ancient archieology and also to learn a thing or two! If you have always wanted to go to Egypt, then go to Luxor. There is alot to do and alot to learn. I went in Nov 07 and had a brilliant time. We stayed in a 5 star hotel for 2 weeks, which was situated right on the River Nile! We could dip our feet in the River Nile without leaving our hotel! How amazing. Attractions In Luxor The ...
...little bit creepy actually! The Luxor Museum was definately something worth visiting and only about a ten minute walk from our hotel. I would say it took us about an 2 hours to look thoroughly around the Luxor Museum. The Mummy Museum was totally not worth visiting and probably took us 20 minutes and was not as interesting. Attractions Around Luxor There were a few day trips around Luxor. One was a visit to Aswan, a neighbouring town. There were ...

The temple at Luxor

Advantages: A very pleasant city with lots of historical background
Disadvantages: Very hot during the summer

Tyhe temples at Luxor were absolutley amazing. I was so astounded at the site that I still have those memories of that holiday to egypt. The site is bathed in Ancient Eyptian glory and the historical background was very good. When you go I have to say that you definately need to get a very good tour guide that speaks good english and make sure that he actually knows what he is talking about and isn't just reciting something that he has learnt off ...
