...to write a review on Malia, a small island in Crete, Greece. I visited Malia this summer with my friends and found it to be one of the most exciting yet laid back cities in Europe. I hope to share my experiences of Malia to the Ciao community.
Brief History: Malia is located on the Greek Island of Crete, 34km west of Heraklion, the largest city and capital of Crete. Most of the buildings and ruins found in Crete are from the Bronze Age, making Crete ... ...ask anyone who's been to Malia, have a reputation for being a bunch of no braining, arrogant idiots. They love preying on tourists, especially the one's who are drunk, so again be careful and just don't get into trouble. Money Exchange: It's a best bet that you should generally get your money exchanged at home before you go on holiday as it saves you the hassle to doing it when on holiday. In the event that you forget to change your money, there ...

...go to the resort of Malia, you fly into Heraklion Airport, and although I've been to a lot smaller airports with a lot less facilities, I have never been to an airport that takes as little consideration to the amount of people the building will actually hold as this one. The seating area itself is large with a separate smoking section, but there simply are not enough seats to go around and there is very little standing room. There is no air conditioning ... ...and irritable.
May 2004
This year things were better. We flew from Gatwick North Terminal into Heraklion, and the only complaint I really had was that we arrived about 5 minutes after a flight from Manchester, and although they have 2 baggage carousels they unloaded both sets of luggage onto the same one. It was bedlam. Other than that, and a slow check in process on my flight home, I can’t really complain!

...for 2 weeks holiday in Malia, which wasn’t particularly cheap, as we met people who were staying right in the centre, and they had only paid £250 and they had their own pool.
~*~DURING THE DAY~*~
Whilst we were there, we didn’t do a huge amount during the day. We slept in quite late, believe me you will need it, if you roll in at 7am like we did! After a nice lie in, the best thing to do is sunbathe, have a wander to find where you ... ...It’s pretty dangerous driving in Malia, everyone drives quite erratically. We didn’t have to show any driving licences or passports when we hired out our scooters. One piece of advice I will give you, is make sure you get fully comprehensive insurance when you hire anything, there is often quite a difference in the prices, but if you don’t the Greeks have been known to follow you back to your apartments and damage your scooters, ...

Advantages: hot, party atmosphere, something for everyone, Disadvantages: its too hot, most places are not air conditioned, all the clubs are meat markets
...every other drinking establishment in Malia, the main foci (?) were getting hammered and pulling. The phrase ‘meat market’ does not do justice to the Beach Road!
So, Malia is a definite recommendation as a groups holiday. Less expensive and clichéd than Ayia Napa/Ibiza yet seemingly just as much fun if dancing till dawn/sleeping past mid day floats your boat. There is plenty to do during the day both independently and through the package ...

Advantages: Great weather and soon got fit Disadvantages: No working safe deposit boxes, poor hygiene in the apartments and the area is quite expensive for food, drink and activities
Malia, stated as being the in place for 2001 is situated on the North East side of the island of Crete. I only choose Greece again due to the great time I had in Kos last year, but as I was going with a group of people, I let them deal with the booking this time round. They went down to the Traveltext place in Nottingham and booked through Summer Sun and were flying with Carrier Air 2000 (non of wich I have ever heard of). Summer Sun were not the ... ...accomodation is very basic in Malia, and I mean basic. All you have is a bathroom with the usual amenities. The toilet however is very basic. It is the usual basin but no toilet paper can be deposited down them. All used toilet paper must be placed into the bin provided next to the toilet, which got cleaned / emptied every 3 or more days. The kitchen is basically two rings (one big, one small), and a fridge which just worked, then your sleeping area. ...

Malia! WOW!
Just came back from a holiday in Malia Crete, 8 of us guys went for 2 weeks (which is to long btw) and had an awesome time :D
If your after ANYTHING from a holiday other than sun, sex and nightlife then simply dont go to Malia lol... thats ALL there is to do there- but like us 8 lads that was all we wanted!
The place itself is unusual the town only lives for the night and that doesnt start out there til 12 midnight- during the day ... ...pool and there is simply nothing else to do- we were there for 2weeks and we went water park twice and a Cruise other than that ever day was the same!
Food is great out there, hotel food is horrible but if you eat out a meal and a drink is only about 10euros, and at brekie you can get a 2.90euros from almost everywhere!
During the day finding things to fill your time with is difficult- theres a few shops out there that sell day trips to water parks, ...

I recently returned from a week long holiday with a friend, to the resort of Malia. Being an experienced visitor to many of the typical "clubbing/party" resorts, (i.e Faliraki, Playa de las Americas, Ayia Napa etc), I can confirm that Malia offers an incredibly good array of pubs, bars, discos and clubs. The set out of the town enables you to steadily work your way around the bars, drinking cocktails, fish bowls, and shots of tequila and after shock ... ...good, my personal recommendation being the mexican offering great tasting fajitas and enchilladas! I would steer clear of the several chinese restaurants however, as everybody I know who ate there had the same comment, "very greasy food." My only real disappointment with this resort would be the beach. Its watersports facilities are good, however the spacing of the sunbeds doesn't allow for any private conversations or leg stretching, a little bit ...

Advantages: the night life is amazing and you won't be short of things to do during the day! Disadvantages: quite a violent place but if you keep your heads down you will be fine
Lovely place, very taylor made for your average 18-30 holiday. Great place to go if you are wanting a fun, sea, sand and LOTS of alcohol holiday, with the main stretch of bars supplying you with enough alcohol for the rest of your life in one night, this is the best place to go if you if you want a holiday in Greece.
I was shocked to find there was a lot of violence and that the men over there hit women. It was a real culture shock to me, but other ... ...and I wouldn't have changed it...
the bars were pretty good too, there was club tropicana which had a club and an outdoor bar, and we loved sitting outside there for most of the night as we were normally too drunk after being collard by most of the poachers for 5 drinks for 5 Euro's. If we did manage to stuble past the first few sets of bars, we would normally end up having a drink in Bar One, this has a roof overhead, but there are no doors to ...

Advantages: Brilliant nightlife Disadvantages: Having to come home!
I had a girls holiday to Malia in Crete about 6 years. It was the first holiday I'd had since splitting up with my ex-boyfriend, so I was determined to have a good time. There were 10 of us that went in the end - we must have looked quite a sight, all walking down the main road to the bars in a group that first night!
The nightlife in Malia is brilliant - its just one long road of bar, bar, bar. One of our favourites was the Newcastle Bar, cos it ... ...a thing about Geordie accents!) and everyone was so friendly. We met so many people - complete strangers that would come up and talk to you for a few minutes and then try to snog you - not that we complained most of the time!
It was just the holiday I needed to get me over my ex - great mates, brill nightlife, loads of drunken nights, cheap booze (2 for 1 on most cocktails and bottles), hot sun and lovely beaches. We had to pay to use the sunloungers ...

Advantages: It's sunny Disadvantages: Where do I start?!
I'd like to start this review on a high note, but I honestly can't think of many good things about it!
It WAS hot and we met some nice people!
On the whole though, it's just another tacky home from home place created by drunken brits with no brains. The whole focus of the holiday was to get absolutely hammered and then sleep all day on the sun loungers - which is fine if that's what you enjoy doing, but then why not go for a bender and then off ... ...every minute, the food was poor, the other people in the hotel were rowdy, making noise all night long, the hotel workers were angry and miserable (although I can hardly blame them), the beaches are packed, literally, with sun loungers, so that you could actually reach out and touch the person next to you without having to move an inch. The shops are full of cheap tat, the clubs overpriced and tacky, the people a nightmare! What more can I say?

Advantages: Close to other towns, nice shops, locals very friendly. Disadvantages: Larger louts ahoy.
I loved Crete so much and really enjoyed the sights etc. I am big into my nights out and was dying for the night life. However I thought it was very rough. I avoided Malia most nights and went to neighbouring towns etc. Early in the morning if you walk down the strip there is nothing but broken glass and various drunk people passed out on foot paths. I did the Malia night life for one or two nights and enjoyed it but that was enough for me. We spoke ... ...Malia has been ruined by this. Our apartments had security to keep the noise down which was great. I would go back to Crete but not back to Malia. In our apartments there were two people, one female and one male who were both attacked on the strip. The male was attacked by bouncers. I was actually a bit nervous the nights that I did go out there and I'm a strong woman who doesn't take crap so that's saying a lot! ...

Not long been back from holiday and you know what..after going to malia ican say hands down i am bored with going out in england as it does not compare to the brilliance that is malia!

I took £800 which was ab out 970 euros for 2 weeks and i took home 200 euros. You can quite easily do the holiday on £600 if you wanted but i decided to take more. Most breakfasts consist of the same, but price varies from 2.90 euroes to 9 euros depending on what you want. Loads of cheap deals on brekkie tho soo its awesome! Lunch is fine, most places you can pick up a cheap bite for around 5 euros. ...

We wnt on honeymoon in malia and we're just back may 2004 and we both had different ideas of the perfect holiday . Thats what was great about it we could mix and match so we both loved it our only regret is we didnt take the kids. Theres lots to do the beach is close with all different water sports or you can just lie on a sun lounger or even take a lovely swim in the sea, the sand was lovely no stones. The shops were good and they didnt harass you into buying anything like they do here and you could walk into a shop and back out without noticing sometimes ...
