Advantages Advantages Not far off being as good as London, and it's cheaper

Disadvantages Disadvantages Renovations make it a mess at the moment.

OK. I have been thinking for a while what the content of my next op should be, and now I have decided. I am doing a guide to Manchester, my home city over several ops. In this general introduction I’m going to look at what the city has to offer, but over the coming weeks I’ll be doing individual ops on lots of the city’s features. Manchester really needs little introduction, one of Britain’s most famous cities and birthplace to some world-renowned teams and bands. It’s a large city often referred to as the “Capital of the North.” In recent years the city has seen massive developments, both ... more

Take the train to Manchester Piccadilly. If you must start from somewhere, then pick somewhere in Yorkshire. Say Huddersfield or Leeds, that way you get to ride up through the Colne Valley on the train, one of the best journeys I know. Passing places with names like Slaithwait, Linthwait and Marsden (the locals pronounce them as "Slowit", "Linfit" and Marzdin) and finally through the long, long tunnel that connects the White Rose with the Red. It's thirty minutes of sheer beauty from Huddersfield to Manchester. On the other hand, if you prefer 30 minutes of shit, you can use the M62. Leave the ... more

Advantages Advantages capital of the north, plenty to see and do

Disadvantages Disadvantages same as in all big cities - just use your head

Manchester is fast becoming known as the capital of the north and so I’ve decided to take the opportunity on this rather dull day in Manchester, to tell you all about some of its merits. I moved to Manchester just over 2 years ago to live with my partner from the sleepy Shropshire town of Shrewsbury. I’m now considered an ‘honoury manc’ by my boyfriend and his family and I’m very proud to say the least of my new heritage. Manchester today is a big place. While 2.6 million people live within its actual boundaries, over 7 million others live in the wider region, making it second only to London ... more

Advantages Advantages Cosmpolitan, China Town, Rusholme, always something to do

Disadvantages Disadvantages The idiots, Manchester City, Manchester United

I lived on and off in Manchester for around 5 years (1998 - 2002) and if I wasn't staying there, I visited at least twice a month. I've seen the city evolve over the past few years and now I've moved to Grimsby (review coming soon...) I'm going to write a review on Manchester. Let's start with the positive side. Manchester is one of the most cosmopolitan cities in the UK. You have people from all walks of life here and they all combine to make a diverse and cultural experience. There is probably every race, nationality and profession combined in Manchester and if you walk down Market Street ... more

Advantages Advantages great shops, pubs, clubs and culture! Its got the lot!!

Disadvantages Disadvantages Its not the capital of England...YET!

Despite what many people may think about the goings-on in Manchester it is NOT a scruffy, rough drugs haven! And not everyone walks around repeatedly saying "innit" and "mad fer'it" like a city full of Gallagher clones. Manchester has undergone huge changes in the last 5 or so years. I admit, it never used to be that impressive..and the main thing to boast about was that it was home to Manchester United...although I'm more of a Bury fan myself...(but lets not go too far into that!!) Since the bomb which i guess you all know about Manchester has been re-developed immensely with new shopping ... more

Advantages Advantages So much diversity in such a compact place

    Disadvantages Disadvantages The weather

I admit I am biassed but I love my city. I have travelled around the UK and visited various towns and cities but in my own opinion, nothing comes remotely close to what Manchester offers. Based on cotton manufacturing, Manchester had a difficult problem in the 60s as the textile industry was starting to decline. As you probably have seen watching Coronation Street, Manchester really was like this during the 60's, 70'2 and 80's, struggling to find it's place in the world. Poverty was widespread and life expentancy short. All was to change one morning in June 1996. A huge terrorist bomb ripped ... more

    User doesn't recommend the product

Advantages Advantages lots of facilities, good transport links

Disadvantages Disadvantages untidy, litter, horrid railway station (Victoria)

I feel qualified to pass an opinion on Manchester because I was born and raised within 5 miles- to the North - at Besses O'th Barn..what a quaint name-yes it is. Anyway, Manchester was the nearest big city, but I rarely went in(We just didn't in those days)..When I was 17 I had a Saturday job in Lewises (which doesn't exist any more) and growing up I used to go into Manchester on Saturday night to the clubs there. So how disappointed I am when I go there nowadays and see the contrasting building developments that have taken place- and how Manchester could be SO much better if people just had a ... more

Manchester is my new home town and having never ever been here before I had doubts of whether or not I would like it here. What was I worrying about ey? Having been into the city now 4 times at different times and on different days and seeing most of Manchester and what it has to offer I thought I’d give you a guide. Manchester has something for everyone and at every age and you can guarantee you won’t be board. It has many things to offer and I will go through each thing at a time. We will start in the city centre. Having lived in London for two years and finding it so cramped with people ... more

Advantages Advantages Great dining, loads of choice with shopping and cultural activities, easy to get to

Disadvantages Disadvantages the scallies and the expensive trendy drinking places

I thought I would do Proxam's My Hometown challenge However I have already written an opinion on my birthplace Dumfries so I thought I would write one on my adopted home town and current place of residence Manchester. It has been five years since I packed my bags and moved to Manchester and I love it. as it is a really homey friednly, down to earth city. Where Is Manchester? Yes I know this sounds a silly question but I may as well be thorough! Manchester is in the North West of England in the very south of Lancashire. It lies on three rivers the Irwell, the Medlock and the invisible rerouted ... more

Advantages Advantages Great shopping, loads to do, great architecture/sites, great location, transport links

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Having to leave???

OK, cards on the table. A couple years ago, I had to leave Manchester for work (I'm now based in Cambridge)......I was, and in fact still am, pretty darned upset at having to leave Manchester - it's quite franky an absolutely fantastic city. Luckily for me(!), my boyfriend is still based up there, and so I visit frequently......yay! Where to start, there's so much to tell you about!! OK, first off, transport links.... There is a FANTASTIC airport - the second biggest in the UK after Heathrow. It has a quick and efficient rail link (10-15 mins) to Picadilly, Oxford Road and Deansgate stations ... more
