Advantages: great food, excellent service, decent prices, lovely bistro bar Disadvantages: Too far away
We had driven past this restaurant many times while travelling up the A19 in North Yorkshire. A few years ago we heard it won an award for its food and so always thought we would have to try it one day.
For a surprise, my wife booked it for my birthday. It was a 30 minute drive and we knew that it wasn't the cheapest of meals there. The restaurant is right on the edge of the busy A19 so its not exactly peaceful. There is plenty of parking available ... ...nowhere.
Arriving, we were met at the door and shown into a bar where we could look at the menu before being seated. The bar is quite small as is the restaurant but it is decidedly cosy. The kind of place where you would want to take someone special for a special meal.
The menu had some great dishes on it. Very rustic and filling. We had a minestroni soup and pate with home made bread as starter both of which tasted as though they had been made ...

I went to the restaurant for lunch, having eaten here 4 years ago. I was saddened to see what an air of neglect the outside of the building now has. Even the inn sign was so badly faded you could hardly read it. I tried to reassure myself that the food and inside would not disappoint. Disappoint it did. We sat in the conservatory where flies if they werent already dead on the window sill, were in abundance. The fish bar was a particular attraction ... ...we were told 'we are in the country its inevitable'. If so why not cover the fish bar?!
We started with the atrichoke soup, which was overseasoned. I had a opkayish risotto and my companion a burnt seafood pancake (basically salmon sardines- yes sardines- and some non descript white fish) in a sloppy sauce. I did comment on this and was told 2 headchefs had recently left. It showed. We also thought £5.50 for a glass of 175ml house wine was excessive. ...
