...this is very real - Meadowhall centre - and I think that even those with a complete aversion to shopping might wanna pay attention.
I'm a huge fan of the shopping centres - everything you want under one roof, no need to worry about the weather or having to trek from one side of a town to the other (though some of these places are the size of a small town, granted) everything is convenient and practical. That's the theory. In practice, some of these ... ...shopping - if I'm not, Meadowhall is the stuff of my worst nightmares. Otherwise, it's probably my favourite place to go shopping.

Meadowhall is located to the north of Sheffield, a little way out from the city centre. It's located on some old steelworks site, surrounded by quite a lot of tired looking industrial type buildings, including a couple of cooling towers. ...

Meadowhall then, the demure palace of steel-city (that’s Sheffield to you!) capitalism, as seen from the outside, looks like a mix between a ‘blocky’ building-brick concrete jungle and a glass and light-encrusted fairyland. Now, Meadowhall shoppers can be roughly categorised into two major groups – the Shoppers and the Husbands* . The Shoppers will dash around the hundreds of stores collecting a wide array of bags of varying sizes and colours. Meadowhall opened on September 4th 1990, amid a fair few complaints from Sheffield shop keepers and customers alike. At this time the main shopping area in Sheffield was The Moor and Fargate in the city centre – these areas had been suffering from lack of trade and many shops had been shutting. Many people felt that this out-of-town shopping centre would attract all the major High street names leaving the city centre to die. ...
