Not just roundabouts !!

Advantages: lots of places to go
Disadvantages: the city centre can be expensive..

What I am reviewing is Milton Keynes in general. I moved to Milton Keynes three years ago for my job relocation for NatWest bank, I didn't know anything about Milton Keynes and I had never been here before in my life. The company was offering me a good deal to put me up for six months in a flat for me to think about staying so I thought why not. My first impression after leaving the motorway was "my god there are a lot of roundabouts !" I noticed ...
...I had a map. Milton Keynes is made up of different estates, and when you get used to it the H and V roads do make life easier as they go through Milton Keynes to lead to various estates in the north, east, central, west and south. With these grid roads are a lot of roundabouts, there are about 200ish and not many traffic lights, it makes the traffic more free flowing though. There are plenty of things to do around Milton Keynes and I shall try ...

More than concrete cows, thankfully...

Advantages: Great shopping centre, big theatre, environmentally-conscious council
Disadvantages: No character, hideous architecture, even worse sculptures

...I’ve never actually lived IN Milton Keynes (aside from one week in hospital for appendicitis), but Newport Pagnell, where I spent the first 18 years of my life is just outside. Milton Keynes is a new town (30 years old give or take a couple) and is constantly trying to gain official city status, possibly to justify all those signs to ‘city centre.’ It has absorbed a number of older towns and villages and hence has some rather quaint ...
...What else is there to Milton Keynes? First and foremost is the huge shopping centre. Occupying an ever-expanding patch of land in the centre of Milton Keynes, this under-cover shoppers paradise has just about everything you could wish for. All the main stores from John Lewis and Marks and Spencer to Next and Virgin, plus a large variety of smaller, more esoteric establishments, which sadly seem to change with the seasons as the rental prices soar ...

A COCK AND BULL STORY

Advantages: Very well laid out area with plenty to see
Disadvantages: Will probably take more than a day to see it all

Milton Keynes area is East of Buckingham. The new town was originally meant to house about a quarter of a million people in 1991.It takes in several villages,Woughton, Simpson and Loughton as well as Stony Stratford, on the A5. Stony Stratford is where the" cock and ball "story came from, as it has a cock and ball inn.It is rich in history but like alot of areas, has been subject to fires in the 18th century. In Milton Keynes itself there are still ...

Objecting to the Mocking...

Advantages: Ease of navigation, a combination of just about everything for everyone.
Disadvantages: Public Transport

Milton Keynes.. my home town. At 21 years of age, I have to admit that I have spent many years shying away from admitting where I come from. Not now! I am proud now to say that I am from one of the fastest growing cities in Europe, and I can take any mocking that you throw at me (believe me, I've heard it all before!) So why do I like it and what do I like about it? Milton Keynes, in my opinion, has a lot to offer for everyone. The obvious attractions ...
...Northampton, as 22 years ago Milton Keynes did not have its' own hospital. However, my parents were brought up in Wolverton and New Bradwell, and respectively I am a "Braddle" girl, save for my parents' 18 month stint "over the hill" in Bradville when I was very young. So, as I have grown up, this small town has grown around me into the vast area it is today. Firstly, let me tackle this stereotypical view of the road system in MK. Yes, the roads ...

City of Roundabouts

Advantages:
Disadvantages:

Don't get me wrong, Milton Keynes is a very nice place, but at the end of every road is a roundabout. All the roads seem to be in straight lines. Apart from that, it is an excellent place for shopping. The shopping centre is all under cover and there are lots of shops to go shopping in. It has a large parking area too, which is good as the centre is so big. It has lots of parks which a beautifully looked after. One has an oriental theme with pagodas ...

Milton Keynes-Ultra Modern

Advantages: Well Planned. Modern. Good Facilities. Great Shops
Disadvantages: May lack character

...lived in Northamptonshire I visited Milton Keynes quite often. I went there basically for the shopping. It really is impressive. Firstly there is a huge shopping mall where you can shop til you drop and most of the big High Street names are there. What else do I like about Milton Keynes ? In a way I think it is rather like Singapore without the sun. It is arguably the most impressive of Britain's new towns and really has been well planned. Most ...

The Japanese certainly think that for there has been quite large inflows of investment from Japan into Milton Keynes. The Open University is located there and the English Badminton Association have their HQ there as well. Another good aspect of Milton Keynes is the very good transportation network. ...

Great shopping

Advantages: shops
Disadvantages: None

Milton Keynes is officially the fastest growing 'city' in the country - possibly in Europe. It has Ultra Modern facilities including the Fantastic Ski Dome and Leisure complex - known as XTreme. I think this as well as the brand New Theatre district just adds compliment to the already impressive city and it's surroundings. The streets are all layed out in very easy to get about by, and the shopping centre is fantastic for shopping and there's loads ...

Hell on Earth

Advantages: good rail links, shopping
Disadvantages: everything else

What can I say about Milton Keynes, the town that thinks it's a city. Even the football team is called Milton Keymes City. Ridiculous. There is one advantage to this urban hell-hole, and that is the large shopping centre right next to Milton Keynes Central station. A huge range of shops means that Christmas is the only time I venture near the place. If you've ever been to MK you're sure to know what I mean. Straight roads and roundabouts link horrible ...

Milton Keynes - US town in Bucks?

Advantages: roads and green spaces
Disadvantages: architecture and concrete

Having visited Milton Keynes on a number of occasions, I'd like to put forward my thoughts on the place. Firstly the roads, I think that the way that the road system has been planned (in a big grid) is very USA-like with national speed limits (i.e. not 30 or 40 like most towns) applying on the main roads. This seems to work well, with the residential areas sited off these main roads with green spaces (and MK has quite a number of green spaces - ...
...numbers rather than names as in most towns, but the gridlayout and signposting does make it fairly easy to map read and count junctions. The architecture is a bit grey and concrete and the town seems to be lacking in landmarks, (the snowdome is a stunning exception to this,) however I am told that MK has concrete cows which I still haven't seen! ...

BE AMAZED OR IS THAT IN A MAZE

Advantages: large shopping area,
Disadvantages: bus takes 3hrs or more

...for some christmas shopping at Milton keynes. In the Oxford area you are able to get a family explorer ticket on the bus which covers two adults and one child or one adult and three children for just five pounds. However be warned it took us nearly three hours to even get there. The shopping centres are within easy reach of each other (between midsommer boulevard and silbury boulevard).Once inside you are met by a vast variety of shops.eg fashion, computers, toys ...

A day out in Milton Keynes (Planet Ice)

Advantages: Wheelchair friendly, good day out
Disadvantages: Quite pricy

...and I drove of to Milton Keynes. They seem to have many roundabouts there, but we eventually found the Leisure Park with the Bowling Alley and the Ice Skating Ring (Planet Ice). We went to the Bowling Alley first, to have lunch in the Burger Bar. The students loved it, as there was music and many flashing lights from the game machines around us. Having lunch there wasn't the easiest thing to do, with the Burger Bar having no cutlery around to prepare ...
...We then went over to the Ice Skating Ring and paid around seven Pounds (student and carer) to get in. I've been there since and prices have gone up to around 6 Pounds per person due to high demand. So my colleague and I got our skates on and got the wheelchairs onto the ice. As there is a step to get on, this was only manageable with someone else's help or the ramps provided. We arrived in time for the disco they have every Saturday, which meant ...

Its got its good and bad points

Advantages: Shops, jobs, road layout,
Disadvantages: House prices, some rough areas, but everywhere has them i suppose.

Been living in Milton Keynes since January, and had to move here because of a new job. Its a unique place, in that it is a city set out like a grid. This means its easy to navigate, and all the main roads are either H or V numbered (horizontal or vertical) Rented a property initially, which was reasonable at £425 a month, in a nice area called Loughton. But once we started to look for property, as 1st time buyers, it was soon discovered you get ...
...sale are relatively new, and pricy too. There are many dodgy areas, where you would not choose to live unless forced too, those near the centre in particular. The centre has a huge indoor shopping complex, and its extension is close to completion. Also the city centre has many bars and restaurants, and 2 multiplex cinemas, and of course the new Ski Dome. Good for business and jobs, many companies are based in MK, and unemployment is very low, so ...

A Review of Milton Keynes

Advantages: Leisure facilities, employment, easy access to South, East and Midlands
Disadvantages: No football team, low wages

Milton Keynes is Britain's newest and largest town. It started life in the seventies and has grown rapidly to provide varied employment, leisure facilities and residential properties as well as a number of innovations such as the grid-like road system and redway cycle/footpath network. The 'New City' of MK, as it's known, is one of about 30 towns bidding for city status in the year 2000, and this bid will be helped by the recently opened theatre, ...
...River Great Ouse. Unfotunately Milton Keynes doesn't have any major sports teams and there are frequently bids to attract top class football teams to the town. Employment is scattered throughout the town and is not concentrated in the centre unlike traditional towns. The unemployment rate is among the lowest in the country and the train journey to London takes about 45 minutes, so it's convenient for commuters. Due to Milton Keynes' central location ...

Milton Keynes - is this what towns have come to?

Advantages: Good place to learn to drive
Disadvantages: Depressing shopping mall

...to my first trip to Milton Keynes. I had this image of a dynamic modern shopping centre with all types of shop under one roof and within a reasonably compact area. But what did I find? A tatty very ordinary shopping mall twenty minutes walk from the station, set in an unbelievably depressing system of roads. The only decent store, John Lewis, keep to their outdated habit of closing on Sundays AND Mondays, when most stores now open seven days a week. ...
...possible). Some years ago, Milton Keynes Council had the audacity to place large advertisements outside Clapham Junction station in London reading “You’re welcome to London – Milton Keynes”. The implication was that MK was a greatly superior place to the capital. Well, all I have to say is that London doesn’t make me lose the will to live. And on this note, if MK is so wonderful, why does it have the highest suicide rate in Britain? ...

The City of Dreams

Advantages: Lots to do, New City, Constantly Growing and Developing
Disadvantages: Not "Number One" on the tourist hotspots of Britain, Roundabouts!!

I work in Milton Keynes, but actually live 30 miles away from it, so this opinion shouldn't (hopefully) be too biased. It is a fabulous new city, second only in England to Bath (in my opinion) but its not actually fair to compare the two as they are so different. Milton Keynes has absolutely anything anyone could ever want. Apart from the excessive roundabouts and the concrete cows, someone who hasn't visited Milton Keynes probably won't think ...
