Mombassa, Kenya. some hints and tips!!

Advantages: Great weather, great people, great scenery!
Disadvantages: sometimes VERY hot, people always trying to sell you things!

Hi there everybody!! I recently travelled to Kenya and i just thought i'd share some of my experiences with you! I travelled to Mombassa Kenya in July of this year and i have to say i think it was the best holiday i have been on! I have totally fallen in love with Africa and the African people! I am even thinking about saving up so i can travel there sometime in the future with my friends! I stayed in a hotel called The Voyager Beach Resort, the ...
...10 mins from Mombassa Town. The views are breathtaking across the ocean and if you have a sea view room then this is what you are to wake up every morning for the next 2 weeks!! The food was fantastic and all the staff were very obliging! I am still in contact with many of them even now! As a 17 yr old i get very bored very easily, but the hotel offered so many different activities, i always found myself being roped into some kind of sport! :o) However ...

Hot and Sticky.

Advantages: Great place to relax and unwind. Hot.
Disadvantages: VERY HOT!

...you want to go to Mombasa - do it. Don't be put off by the terrorists, otherwise, I think, they'll have won... ***MOMBASA*** Mombassa is a port town – newly designated as a city (the President’s New Year present) – on the Indian Ocean coast. It is a bustling, vibrant place, sadly lacking in anything resembling the levels of cleanliness we are familiar with in our major cities. The Town centre is no safe place to be after dark for tourists, but ...
...remember the golden rules – carry no valuables in obvious places, not even jewellery and keep money well hidden away. Take a taxi if you are not sure – it is better to be safe than to be sorry. But there is much to see in the centre of Mombassa – most notably Fort Jesus: a stop off for slaves in the 18th century. And now onto the op… **TRAVELLING TO MOMBASSA** There are a number of ways of getting to Mombassa – as we were staying in Nairobi beforehand ...

Fantastic Scenery, shame about the beach boys...

Advantages: Beautiful landscapes and fantastic excursions
Disadvantages: Beach boys and price difference

I went to the Papillon Lagoon Reef Hotel on Daini Beach, Mobasa, Kenya in May 2001. The deal we got was brilliant - £480 each for two weeks all inclusive. Jostling about on the plane journey, which was a fair bit longer than we thought it would be - about 10 hours travelling - I didn't really know what to expect - considering I'd only seen Africa in documentaries about lions and in the Lion King by Disney. The previous opinions have showed you how ...
...was no exception, but I feel that this opinion should inform people of the various problems we encountered, as you don't want to hear the same stuff over again. I will start, however, with a description so that you can weigh the pros and cons for yourselves. Mobasa itself is not for the feint hearted - travellers should be aware of the poverty that the residents live in. There was a great flood through the area which practically destroyed the roads ...

Marooned on the Reef

Advantages: Great weather all year round.
Disadvantages: Beware of crime.

My worst memory of Mombassa was the day we hired a boat to take us to the reef. A respectable looking guy approached us on the beach and offered to take us on a tour of the reef. I was keen on doing some snorkelling so we arranged to go that afternoon. We had mistakenly thought he was the official hotel boat operator but when we eventually found him it was at a different booking office. No matter, he seemed a decent chap and the boat looked OK. The ...
...a good snorkelling site first, then on to the reef. On arrival at our first destination he dropped anchor, sorry, I mean he threw over a piece of rope, just long enough to reach the bottom, with a rock tied to it. The snorkelling was great so we stayed there longer than the other boats to get a less crowded look. When we arrived at the reef, most of the other boats were departing for shore. The boatman pulled alongside one of the few remaining boats ...

If you get bored on the beach

Advantages: beaches, people, hotels
Disadvantages: beach boys

The beaches around Mombasa are wonderful but it depends where you go! By far the most spectacular are the beaches south of Mombasa but once you get on the main strip you will be driven mad by beach boys unless you choose your hotel carefully. One of the cheapest and the best is Traveller's Tiwi - here they only allow a few to use the beach - they don't pester guests because the hotel allows them to set up a shop after dinner once a week and this ...
...agents at Diani. North of Mombasa life is more hectic and the beach boys are so persistent that the hotels do not put sun loungers on the beach! You have to run into the sea to avoid them! They are very cheerful and funny but a pest ! If you go further north to Sun and Sand etc the sea goes out miles and you can never swim in it. Use the beach boys to take you out snorkelling as they know where to go. bargain hard. Beware of Kenya Airways as they ...

Diving around Mombasa.

Advantages: Plenty to do and very cheap.
Disadvantages: A very dirty city.

Mombasa is a rather dirty city on the coast of Kenya. As soon as you get out into the surrounding areas though it changes dramatically. There are the most fantastic sandy beaches with clear blue warm waters. The diving is second to none with something for every one, from small wrecks, to coral walls. The marine life is truly abundant, with sharks, moray eels and turtles in hugh quantitys. On the north coast outside mombasa there is a highly recomendable ...
...lot of history in the Mombasa area, and also world famous safari's. The safari to tsavo east and west is the best that I went on. If you like good food, then you must also eat at the Tamarind resturaunt as it is world class, especially the Lobster. If you like the sea, then try the Tamarind Dow. Mombasa is perfect for singles, couples or familys, although as a word of warning, if you are traveling alone there is an extremely high incidence of AIDs ...

It has to be the closest thing to Heaven

Advantages: excellent
Disadvantages: you have to come back

The beaches in Mombasa are absolutely wonderful, bright blue seas, clean sand, it’s just a marvel to look at. To stroll at night time wow that was a moment to be savoured. It’s so easy and relaxing that the busy roads of the cities seem miles away. Mombasa itself is a wonderful place, quiet but still lively enough not to get bored. You can go swimming with dolphins and watch the shows if you like. It is the chief port in Kenya, you can get direct ...

MagicalAfrica Safari Kenya

Advantages: Staff willingness to help- nothing is too much trouble
Disadvantages: none

...even arranged our travel onto Mombasa without taking a shilling in commission. We would definitely recommend Magical Africa to anyone who wants a genuine African safari and are so glad we didn't book a tour through our UK travel agent as originally planned. We really discovered how lucky we had been when we spoke to other holiday-makers in the second week of our trip- ALL of which had been on safaris offering a lot less for twice the price. ...

THE REAL MOMBASA

Advantages: A story book country
Disadvantages: The poverty and begging

A couple of years ago I fulfilled a lifelong ambition to visit Africa. We travelled with Inspirations and stayed at the Diani Reef Grand Hotel, it had been given a “five star” rating by the travel organisation in Kenya. This hotel is a little way from the island of Mombassa. Every time we went on any excursion it seemed that we had to go onto Mombassa. We travelled on the ferry each time, but we had to go over as foot passengers. These ferries are ...
...not even stud earrings. The highlight of this holiday were the days we spent on Safari. This part of the holiday was marvellous, wonderful, magic seeing elephants, giraffes, lions and other animals in their native habitat. This would not be suitable for children because of the long periods when there is only scrubland or bush to see. When there are animals to see we stood up in the jeep and watched them out of the roof. Mind you to look down and ...

Quick review of Mombasa (Kenya)

I stayed here for 2 weeks in December 2007, and had a truely horrific time. This culiminated when we left the hotel to go on safari and had our safe broken into and then relocked using our chosen code. We had cash and credit cards stolen leading to a loss of £2100. Aside from this, the hotel was a total disappointment. It was cheap to go here but you really do get what you pay for. The hotel standard is more like 2* or 3* at best. The location is terrible, very isolated and taxi's are crazily expensive, leading to a feeling of being trapped in the resort compound. This feeling isn't helped by the presence of lots of security guards constantly patrolling the perimeter. ...

Ideal Holiday Destination

Advantages: Lovely holiday resort
Disadvantages: Be careful of your valuables

...Kenya and have been to Mombasa several times. In fact I was there was millenium as well. Well people have different views about different places as they hear different things from other people. I would agree that Kenya in general is quite unsafe if you don't take care but if you do the necessary preparations to avoid getting into these circumstances, you will be just fine. Mombasa is a lovely city with white sandy beaches. Divided into 2...the ...
...These hotels are all exclusive and they would be having all sorts of facilities from swimming pools to tennis courts to squash courts to bars to restaurants to pool games to acrobatics entertainment. There is a lot going on. There are also quite a few really nice clubs on the beach which play till the early morning hours of the day which gives you a chance to see the sunrise. The things to watch out for are the beachboys who might try to sell you ...

Want a hot, friendly, holiday the place to be

Advantages: Beautiful place, lovely people, gorgeous weather
Disadvantages: The travel there and pestering locals

I have been to Mombassa twice now and I loved it both times. The travel from Mombassa airport freaks you out a bit with all the poor locals but once you get to your resort it is like you have entered another world! The people seriously cannot do enough for you they bend over backwards to make you happy and they smile all the time! The beaches are gorgeous and the weather is hot hot hot! The all inclusive deals are real value for money and the ...

Hot, dirty place

Advantages: great safaris and beaches
Disadvantages: dirty, too hot

Mombasa is a dry, hot and dirty place. I have been there twice now. I went on a 2-day safari there - that was brilliant! Fantastic! At the hotel place we were staying at, there was a pool outside, and, at night, loads and loads of elephants came and drank water from it. We were like a metre away in an underground tunnel thing. IT WAS AMAZING!!! We also went on a night safari and we saw 3 male lions right in front of our van! 3 MALE LIONS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ...
