Advantages Advantages Great weather, great people, great scenery!

Disadvantages Disadvantages sometimes VERY hot, people always trying to sell you things!

Hi there everybody!! I recently travelled to Kenya and i just thought i'd share some of my experiences with you! I travelled to Mombassa Kenya in July of this year and i have to say i think it was the best holiday i have been on! I have totally fallen in love with Africa and the African people! I am even thinking about saving up so i can travel there sometime in the future with my friends! I stayed in a hotel called The Voyager Beach Resort, the hotel itself is situated on the beach and is approx. 10 mins from Mombassa Town. The views are breathtaking across the ocean and if you have a sea ... more

Advantages Advantages Great place to relax and unwind. Hot.

    Disadvantages Disadvantages VERY HOT!

Sitting at my computer listening to the rain - and now thunder(!) - outside my window, thinking what can I do to make my afternoon a little more interesting. Looking at my reviews I quickly realised I could slip in another travel op on Kenya. This time it is about Mombasa. ***IMPORTANT*** This review is from my visit to Kenya before the shocking terrorist attack on an Israeli hotel and airliner. I guess this proves that no-where is really safe anymore. However, if you want to go to Mombasa - do it. Don't be put off by the terrorists, otherwise, I think, they'll have won... ***MOMBASA*** ... more

Advantages Advantages Beautiful landscapes and fantastic excursions

Disadvantages Disadvantages Beach boys and price difference

I went to the Papillon Lagoon Reef Hotel on Daini Beach, Mobasa, Kenya in May 2001. The deal we got was brilliant - £480 each for two weeks all inclusive. Jostling about on the plane journey, which was a fair bit longer than we thought it would be - about 10 hours travelling - I didn't really know what to expect - considering I'd only seen Africa in documentaries about lions and in the Lion King by Disney. The previous opinions have showed you how beautiful Mobasa and its beaches are - and my experience was no exception, but I feel that this opinion should inform people of the various problems ... more

Advantages Advantages Great weather all year round.

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Beware of crime.

My worst memory of Mombassa was the day we hired a boat to take us to the reef. A respectable looking guy approached us on the beach and offered to take us on a tour of the reef. I was keen on doing some snorkelling so we arranged to go that afternoon. We had mistakenly thought he was the official hotel boat operator but when we eventually found him it was at a different booking office. No matter, he seemed a decent chap and the boat looked OK. The price was right, and he'd agreed to take us to a good snorkelling site first, then on to the reef. On arrival at our first destination he dropped ... more

Advantages Advantages JAPHET IS A GOOD GUIDE

Disadvantages Disadvantages GUIDES DO NOT KEEP THEIR WORD

I HAVE JUST RETURNED FROM MOMBASA KENYA YESTERDAY. THE GROUND TRANSFERS WERE DIABOLICAL TO SAY THE LEAST. WE ARRIVED FROM NAIROBI TO MOMBASA AT 9.20AM ON THE 24TH JAN. HAVING TRAVELLED HERE MANY MANY TIMES I WAS PLEASED WE WERE ONE OF THE FIRST TO GET THROUGH IMMIGRATION VERY QUICKLY. WE WENT OUTSIDE TO FIND OUR REP + HOTEL TRANSFER, AND WENT ROUND IN CIRCLES. AT FIRST WE COULD NOT FIND OUR NAME BEING HELD UP ON A PLACARD WHICH IS USUAL..SO I PERSONALLY ASKED ALL THE REPS IF WE WERE WITH THEM. THEN THE LAST ONE WAS OURS, I DID NOT KNOW THIS COMPANY AS IT WAS A NEW ONE TO ME. (CENTURIAN.) THE ... more

    Advantages Advantages beaches, people, hotels

    Disadvantages Disadvantages beach boys

The beaches around Mombasa are wonderful but it depends where you go! By far the most spectacular are the beaches south of Mombasa but once you get on the main strip you will be driven mad by beach boys unless you choose your hotel carefully. One of the cheapest and the best is Traveller's Tiwi - here they only allow a few to use the beach - they don't pester guests because the hotel allows them to set up a shop after dinner once a week and this is part of the bargain! The beach here is magic but it is difficult to swim at low tide.the roooms are excellent and staff and food good. You can walk ... more

Advantages Advantages Plenty to do and very cheap.

Disadvantages Disadvantages A very dirty city.

Mombasa is a rather dirty city on the coast of Kenya. As soon as you get out into the surrounding areas though it changes dramatically. There are the most fantastic sandy beaches with clear blue warm waters. The diving is second to none with something for every one, from small wrecks, to coral walls. The marine life is truly abundant, with sharks, moray eels and turtles in hugh quantitys. On the north coast outside mombasa there is a highly recomendable diving school called Barracuda, well worth a try. Other than diving there is also plenty to do and see. There is a lot of history in the ... more

    Advantages Advantages excellent

Disadvantages Disadvantages you have to come back

The beaches in Mombasa are absolutely wonderful, bright blue seas, clean sand, it’s just a marvel to look at. To stroll at night time wow that was a moment to be savoured. It’s so easy and relaxing that the busy roads of the cities seem miles away. Mombasa itself is a wonderful place, quiet but still lively enough not to get bored. You can go swimming with dolphins and watch the shows if you like. It is the chief port in Kenya, you can get direct flights from Heathrow or Manchester. If you are lucky enough you may be able to afford to stay in the luxurious Mombasa Serena Hotel. If you go to ... more

Advantages Advantages A story book country

Disadvantages Disadvantages The poverty and begging

A couple of years ago I fulfilled a lifelong ambition to visit Africa. We travelled with Inspirations and stayed at the Diani Reef Grand Hotel, it had been given a “five star” rating by the travel organisation in Kenya. This hotel is a little way from the island of Mombassa. Every time we went on any excursion it seemed that we had to go onto Mombassa. We travelled on the ferry each time, but we had to go over as foot passengers. These ferries are VERY crowded and we were instructed to wear NO jewellery, not even stud earrings. The highlight of this holiday were the days we spent on Safari ... more

we stayed in the sun n sand club in 2002,and loved it.We payed £559 for 2 weeks all inc.The rooms were amazing, large& furnished with carved dark wooden furnishings, huge beds, and a good sized balcony. The bedding &towels were changed every other day and the whole place was spotless. The food was served buffet style in the massive main dining room with endless choices for all meals. There was also an a la carte Chinese restaurant which had to be booked the day before and was included in the AI ,and there was a barbecue place too.The gardens were huge and filled with amazing flowers &plants and ... more
