...had spoke to people at Monarch before we left the UK and they had informed us that we were allowed an extra 5kg luggage allowance. He rolled is eyes and said "there is what you have been told, and there is what is printed on your ticket".
We had been staying at an AI hotel and hadn't eaten out through the holiday because the food at the hotel was fine but we had planned to treat ourselves on our last night to go and have a meal out and we had saved ... ...whether that is Cosmos or Monarch at fault.
We eventually boarded and despite having paid for seats together were sat across an aisle. Now it is in the small print that 'seats together' can be classed as across and aisle or in front and behind of each other. This isn't exclusive to Monarch most airlines say this so I can't particularly complain in that sense but it still isn't what you would ideally want on such a long flight. Okay we could talk ...

MONARCH PREMIUM SERVICE? – IT CERTAINLY IS NOT!
This was our first and hopefully our last flight with Monarch; we have in the past avoided flying long haul to the Maldives with Monarch, mainly because of the many bad reviews we have seen.
However this year the island we wanted to stay on was only offered via Cosmos and they used Monarch flights during the summer months. We were offered to upgrade to Premium service for a bargain price so we bit ... ...we would have to call Monarch direct 12 weeks before the departure date and request these. Which we did and the very nice Lady on the phone even asked us which seats we wanted, she put all these details on their system and explained that there would be no problem at check in.
CHECK IN
We arrived at Manchester airport early and we were the first couple to check in at the Premium desk. Our cases were weighed, and we were about 5 kgs over.
We explained ...

This is about Monarch scheduled flights not charter, I thought it best to make that clear! Monarch scheduled flights operate to Spain including Alicante, Barcelona and the Balearics, the Canary Islands, Portugal and Cyprus. It uses most UK airports, but mainly Birmingham, Luton, Gatwick and Manchester.
I have used them regularly over the past four years and 'touch wood' have not had too many problems.
They are certainly not the cheapest no frills ... ...Next is baggage and Monarch have jumped on the 'bandwagon' and started to charge for hold baggage. The cost is £3.99 per bag each way or £10.00 if you do not pre-book and pay at the airport!
Hmm bit more expensive now!
Then the killer! Credit card charges, oh yes! £1.75 per passenger each way, which adds a whopping £10.50 to our bill for three people, if that isn't enough they also levy a 50p per passenger each way for debit cards. That really ...

...a flight to Spain with Monarch airlines (aha - we finally get to the Monarch bit I hear you say!).
I searched for ages on the net to find a flight on the days I needed, I was flying out on a Monday and back on the following Thursday. Monarch were the cheapest flying direct from Manchester, and had a good selection of flights and times to choose from, which was good because I needed to get into Spain and then get a train to where my boyfriends band ... ...few more shows.
I phoned Monarch on my mobile and within 5 minutes I had changed my flight from the Thursday to the following Monday. They were very helpful and quick and it only cost me £10.
On the Monday, I went to the Monarch info desk at the airport and collected my new ticket. No fuss or messing about, it took seconds before I was on my way to the check-in desk. Again the check-in staff were great, as were the gate staff, although I felt comfortable ...

...lasted for very long.
Monarch insist on having numerous desks, all labelled as check-in for 'All Monarch Flights'. I'd imagine that as the day goes on, this could get extremely inconvenient, especially for anybody who suffers from traffic delays, and arrives at the airport having to queue behind people not scheduled to set off for another two hours!! But, as I say, this wasn't any problem for me, because we got there so early and there were only ... ...I got the impression that Monarch wanted us out of the small and cramped airport as quickly as possible, and everybody boarded at the same time. Different parties' arrivals onto the plane was staggered slightly due to the different buses which were taking us to the plane, but there were still queues to board. ~*~

Our plane for both journies was a Boeing 757, and it can't be faulted for comfort. The seats were absolutely fine. Leg room isn't ...

...I decided to fly with Monarch purely for the fact that they offered the cheapest flight. On the dates I WANTED to travel, Easy jet were offering a return flight for £350 at the cheapest. I got mine for £137. Quite a difference I thought. Then again its probably my own fault for leaving only three weeks before booking.

The quality of service and the food was excellent. The entertainment wasn't bad it was mainly comedy/drama and I found that my puzzle book was more my kind of thing.
The one downfall that I would point out was the lack of legroom, but then I have very long legs and it is a plane afterall!!! I will definately use this airline again, and after my mum's account of her journeys with easy jet, I think ...

...to Malaga from Manchester was Monarch airlines.
Let’s book some tickets….
Naturally it is possible to book your tickets on-line via the Monarch web site - www.flycrown.com. I booked the tickets in two batches, because my parents were coming to Spain with us for the first week of the fortnight holiday. This is when the first complication arose. Like many e-commerce systems the first time you use it you have to provide all your address and credit ... ...the night before I rang Monarch to see if we could possibly check-in for the flight the night before meaning we’d only need to take our hand luggage in the morning and could bypass the big queues. This is a service that is offered by the big airlines but not by Monarch it appears. In the end it wasn’t such a big issue since there was a queue of two people when we checked-in! We weren’t that fortunate on our return to England, but more of that later.

Monarch Airlines (MON)
I recently travelled with Monarch for the second time from Gatwick to Bodrum (MON3481) on an Airbus A300600 (or something like that). It wasn’t through choice as it was a package but I was fairly pleased.
Check in was fairly good and fast although I was not impressed by the way there were about 6 desks all saying ‘all monarch flights’, I checked the code on the baggage labels and fortunately they did get ... ...and Aviance (the rep for Monarch and about 30+ other airlines at Gatwick). Anyway, after a while some £6 vouchers did appear (if you were standing at the desk), and about an hour later there existence was announced with large ques forming. Breakfast at Garfunkles it was then followed by a further lack of information. At one point there was no one there just a phone, a guess by dialling 100 gave a bit of hope with wait in the lounge boarding soon ...

...your salary or I flew monarch in 1986 to Ibiza and the seat pitch was awful! I know all of this! After 6 years of flying with Monarch, I know every gripe there is with the airline industry. I just wanted to write a review form the other side of the fence, as an ex-employee of a charter airline.

Safety
#####
Monarch has one of the best safety records and, touch wood, to this day has not had any major incidents where there has been loss of life. They have one of the most modern fleets in the business and their own engineering team who are outstanding and used by other airlines aswell. The aircraft are superbly maintained and will not leave the airport unless 100% safe and technically sound. Now, why do passengers complain ...

Monarch you will find do things with excellence and do not cut corners for anything, the meal we had put in front of us consisted of a roll and butter, with a small Mediterranean side salad, Chicken and vegetables with new potatoes in gravy, a slice of apple pie and cheese and crackers. The meal was hot and tasted how food should taste, not like some meals that taste more like processed muck, and it truly was tasty and very filling ...

...came to be flying by Monarch Airlines after booking a holiday to Egypt with Cosmos (both these reviews to come later). As you can imagine it was quite a long journey departing from Manchester at 10.00 am and arriving in Egypt at about 5.30 p.m. our time. I am roughly 5’8 and was squashed if the person sitting in front of me had put their seat back they would ...

Having only travelled to Europe for our holidays, the flight hadn't been such an important factor. 2½ - 3½ hour flights do not really compare to a transatlantic flight.
