Advantages: delays at immigration mean that your bags arrive quickly Disadvantages: Overpriced catering, poor range of shops, poor public transportation infrastructure
If you fly into Moscow from abroad then the chances are that you will fly into Sheremetyevo II airport (SVO) (as they call it, whereas Terminal 2, Sheremetyevo Airport would be more correct). I flew in and out of Sheremetyevo on my recent trip to Russia, flying in from Milan with Alitalia. The experience was somewhat different to most airports - as an Australian in the queue as I flew out last night so succinctly put it, "The system here is up the ... ...maintained - private cabs in Moscow have notoriously poor suspension and shock absorbers - bear in mind that the journey is often 45-60 minutes to the city centre and you'll realise why a cab company is always the better bet.
Departure from Sheremetyevo:
We had been advised to be at SVO in plenty of time - so we arrived nearly 3 hours before our flight was due to take off. Departure is one floor up - with taxis arriving at a ramp in front of the ...

...nightmare.
The plane landed in Moscow around 22:00 and the flight to London was not until the morning after. Me and my friend went trough immigration ready to spend the night together, sleeping somewhere at the airport. The guy who checked the passport, a middle age man with a miserable expression on his face, said something to my friend that, after translation, I couldn't believe. He ways saying that I could go trough passport control and spend ... ...Russian, she had to go trough the Russian passport control and spend the night in the general waiting area on the ground floor.
Now let's look at the following non-sense:
a) Why a Russian citizen, while in transit, cannot spend the night in the transit area?
b) Why on the outbound flight, with a transit of two hours, the same person was admitted trough the area?
c) Why the bags of my friend had been checked all the way trough London when in fact ...

Moscow Sheremetyvo Airport
I have been fortunate to visit about 23 countries and see several national and international airports. I have no hesitation in saying that I would rate this airport at the bottom of my list. Sheremetyvo is 100% Government owned and was built during 1980 Olympic games. It is 35 km from Moscow City and quite small for an International Airport. The statistics tell us that airport has a total area of 85,000 sq. m and can serve ... ...and Lufthansa have stopped flying into this Airport and BA has followed. You do not have a choice if you are visiting Moscow but think twice if you need to use this as a transit airport. I have also written about my flight In Aeroflot in a separate write up. ...

Advantages: Gets you to Moscow Disadvantages: Depressing, slow, difficult to reach
Visitors to Moscow from abroad are likely to arrive at terminal 2 of Sheremetovo airport. Terminal is the word; I really can’t think of a better introduction to modern Russian life.
The atmosphere inside is dingy, and you will be able to enjoy it at leisure as you spend a good long time standing in queues, then being scrutinised by fierce ladies in uniform. When your visa, face and passport have finally been stared at and stamped to the officials’ ... ...to try and get into Moscow itself. There’s no train into town. Outside the airport you will be met by a load of dodgy looking guys in leather jackets offering you taxis. There is also a taxi desk. Foreigners can easily get charged $100 dollars for the trip, and some of them may even have bits of paper showing that whatever they are demanding is the official rate. Don’t pay; you should always bargain for taxis and if you pay $20 you are still being ...

...I was asked to visit Moscow for a week to install and teach a young Russian lad to use an Auto CAD System (computer software for Design). I was only 19 years old and was travelling with my boss. I had heard a lot of jokes about Russia and the way I may have to live for a week but decided to give it a go as I would never have the opportunity again.
So out we flew with Aeroflot (again a lot of jokes about aeroflop etc etc) and had a very good flight ... ...we had now landed in Moscow and were about to enter the Terminal. How dark and bland, all the uniformed staff looking at you with daggers and no one joked or smiled to save their lives. We had to go through Passport Control one by one with a line of people in a queue standing behind a line on the floor, nearly like being back at school (if you stand over the line you get sent to the back of the queue!!)
When you wait for your luggage there was nothing ...
