New Zealand's majestic national park

Advantages: Pristine scenery, stunningly clear air,
Disadvantages: None really

New Zealand's highest mountain is a set of three icy peaks, the highest being 3754m above sea level, dominant in the tussocky McKenzie Country in the South Island. Mount Cook is the central point of the Aoraki Mount Cook National Park and it's also prominent in the Southern Alps, grand to view when you drive along the Tekapo to Twizel long straight roads, or alongside the hydro canal which takes water to the Upper Waitaki district network of lakes, ...
...this natural wonderland in fixed wing or helicopter aircraft, or view it from a tour bus window, your own vehicle or a hired automobile you will never drive the length of the huge valley without stopping in awe and wonder. You leave the main highway near Pukaki Dam, it is clearly signposted and once you drive alongside Lake Pukaki you have about an hour of true bliss: looking towards Mount Cook in all its majesty. Make sure you stop along the way ...

JUST SIMPLY BREATHTAKING

Advantages: Open air, brilliant scenery and hardly any people!
Disadvantages: Can get cold and it's a long way back to the UK

A taste of paradise

Advantages: Out of this world views
Disadvantages: Little to do in the surrounding areas

My visit to Mount Cook National Park was towards the end of a month long tour of New Zealand, so I’d already tasted the stunning landscapes that the country has to offer. However, that did not prepare me for the sheer beauty of Mount Cook. As you arrive in the car park you get the feeling that you are in a special place, with enormous mountain ranges on all sides. There is a 2-3 hour walk on offer to a glacial lake, ominously named Terminal Lake, ...
...As you progress, Mount Cook comes into view in all its splendour. In the distance, the snow capped mountains give off the occasional sound of small avalanches on the upper slopes (don’t worry, they are far enough away for you to enjoy watching them!). Having to cross two large suspension bridges over raging rivers of grey/green glacial water adds to the excitement. After an hour or so you will reach Terminal Lake, so called because you can’t really ...
