Munich - A Beautiful Bavarian

Advantages: Beautiful City, Great Food, Wonderful Museums, Close to Alps
Disadvantages: Too Many Tourists In The Summer

'In Munich Stands a Hofbräuhaus'…or so, roughly translated, runs one well-known staple of Munich's beerhall sing-alongs. For many who've never visited this charming city (and perhaps, even for a few who have…) this, along with the even better-known Oktoberfest, an event which, to all intents and purposes, is little more than the Hofbräuhaus writ large, condensed into a month & transferred on to a circus ground, is pretty much all that Munich amounts ...
...in Munich for about four years, in the late-seventies and early eighties. My earliest memories of the Hofbräuhaus involve sitting outside it in a parked Mercedes with my two brothers, when I was about six. Our father would drop in to have a beer, or two, with his German work colleagues, leaving us to wait squabbling in the back seat for an hour or so, occasionally bringing out pretzels, or a lemonade, to ease our thirst, if not our boredom. It seems ...

Munich Walk Tour

Advantages: one of the must-see cities in Germany
Disadvantages: none really

Last summer I was in Munich to see an art exhibition. I didn´t have any plans for the afternoon and when I saw a leaflet ´Munich Walk Tours in English´, (from May 17th to August 31st daily 10:45 am and 3:00 pm, from Sept. 1st to Oct. 31st daily 10:45, meeting point in front of the town hall entrance under the Glockenspiel on Marienplatz, 9 Euro, under 26 years 8 Euro, children under 14 with an adult free), I thought, why not? Why not find out what ...
...survey over the history of Munich from the year it was officially founded up to today and covered 800 years in about 10 minutes. Our tour wasn´t specified as a historical tour, it was just a general introduction, but we heard more about the reign of the Royal Family of Wittelsbach which ended in 1918 than about the Munich of today. We heard that Munich was bombarded and destroyed so badly during WW2, 70% of the city lay in ruins, that it was considered ...

...a dominating figure in the Munich skyline with its large Onion domes, and a useful way of finding out where you are in the city. It’s visible from as far away as the station on the other side of town. It’s one of southern Germany’s largest, and can accommodate 20 000 people at any one time. Look out for the devil’s footprint just inside the entrance. Standing here you cannot see any of the side windows, and when he came and made his mark, you couldn’t ...
...you get nice views of Munich and beyond. The top is horribly graffitied, though, and as we were there two Japanese youths were adding to it. I don’t understand why people feel the need to carve their initials and a date, or profess their love for someone in sacred monuments they’ll never return to, and where no one knows them. I’m not religious, and in some ways they are just buildings to me, but I wouldn’t do it. Back on the ground, around the ...

...visit on your European Tour, Munich is a beautiful, safe city with plenty of greenery and a relaxing atmosphere to help you regain your energy for the next big city. The Bustling Capital of Bavaria

Advantages: Lots to see and do
Disadvantages: None

Having visited Munich three times in the last 6 months I’ve decided the time has come to write a little bit about it. As most will know, Munich is a city situated in the south of Germany, otherwise known as the capital of the free state of Bavaria, which makes the place, as well as the people, quite different to the rest of Germany. Remember the castle in ‘Chitty Chitty Bang Bang? The lush green scenery of Bavaria? …And with a backdrop of the snow-capped ...
...visit. Munich is easily accessible by plane from many UK airports and for anyone on a low budget or those of you who like a good deal, you can now fly on BMI Baby from East Midlands airport to Munich for a mere 25 pounds each way. Munich has a wonderful history, recognised as being founded in the 12th century when Henry The Lion was looking for somewhere to set up a toll station for the passage of salt. The settlement at the river Isar attracted ...

Time to say goodbye

Advantages: Famous, ground-breaking design, large spectator capacity, inexpensive tickets
Disadvantages: Looks old and dirty now, lack of mod cons

The Olympiastadion in Munich might well be one of the most famous football grounds in the world, but it is certainly starting to show its age now. Plans are afoot to rebuild the entire site, as the DFB (German FA) is about to launch an extensive program of works to upgrade the nation’s stadia in time for the 2006 World Cup. Although it was only built for the 1972 Olympics in West Germany the amazing roof structure, which was ground-breaking ...
...far more important by the Munich public, and there were more people making a lot more noise inside the ground. Just like with Stuttgart, the Bayern fans are famously fickle - if the locals don't consider they should make much of a fuss over a game, they won't! Tickets were easy to get hold of for the Arsenal match, but all the FC Bayern club members came out of the woodwork for the Man Utd game, meaning that the club could have sold out the ground ...

Grab your litre of beer and slap those thighs

Advantages: Wonderful amazing city with something for everybody
Disadvantages: Unfriendly people in the service sector

Although I have resided in Munich now for nearly a year, and previously spent 6 months here, I still get goosebumps when I think of just what a wonderful place it is. I was suprised to hear from friends who visited me recently that they had always thought Munich was an industrial city (with the likes of BMW, VW, etc) and hadn't realised just how beautiful it would be. Munich is an amazing city. It really is the city with something for everyone. ...
...area. The prices in Munich are pretty similar to those in the UK though, so you probably won't be packing your suitcase with bargains. However, CDs are much cheaper and some leather goods and jewellary can be nicely priced. Now, what is Munich most famous for? Well the beer festival of course! Held over the last week in September and the first week in October, the Oktoberfest attracts millions of tourists to Munich every year. If you have friends ...

Business Trip Accommodation in Munich

Advantages: All listed in op.
Disadvantages: Gets booked up early during Oktoberfest & trade-fairs

...I recommend the Holiday Inn, Munich South, as the ideal stopover for the business traveller The rooms are comfortable and practical (TV, telephone, bath, shower, minbar, tea/coffee making facilities) but you get that extra bit of something there that's worth the return visits: 1. The people still wear lederhosen!

Advantages: Almost Traffic free!! bikes are the way forward
Disadvantages: A local place for local people

...Hofbrauhaus (the main brewery in Munich city centre) across the table sat a Munchener, proundly donning the traditional Lederhosen. Hugging his figure tightly he was clasping his mass of beer. It was a warm August afternoon and it left an unspoilt traditional image of munich which is exactly what it is. Although the influence of multi-national companies is evident, there remains a traditional peacuful bavarian culture in the city. I thoroughly recommend ...

Munich-Museums and Oktoberfest

Advantages: "We Bavarians are superiour"
Disadvantages: none

...is the only opinion about munich written by a bavarian.I'm born in Munich and I'm really happy about it. Munich is the perfect connection between culure and, well, drinking, party and lifestyle. Or go to theatre or cinema etc. But on the other hand side there's this face of munich the most people know: Oktoberfest, ...
...part of munich: There's this kind of "bavarian way of life" that makes bavarians think as bavarians, not as Germans. I you'd ask a (real) Bavarian, where he's from, he'd answer "Bavaria", not "Germany". They enjoy to realize their roots as autonome country, with their own Culture, their "own" religions (most bavarians are Catholics) and of course their own beer. That's why Bavaria is interesting. And its beautiful, too, of course. Especially Munich. ...

Beer Hall Fun

Advantages: Superb architecture and beer.
Disadvantages: A bit on the expensive side.

My memories of Munich are a bit hazy bacause the first place we visited was the famous beer hall- the Hofbrauhaus. This is the place that Adolf Hiltler cut his political teeth, but don't let this put you off. The place is great fun. It is everything you would expect from a bavarian drinking den. Huge wooden tables to sit at, or stand on. You are served by golden haired, buxom beauties. The beer comes in huge steins that allow you to crash them into ...
...everywhere. Great fun! Munich does, of course, have its more cultural side. Superb architecture, look out for the giant animated clock called the Glockenspeil. This is a superb example of German engineering without tyres on it. Good shops and superb sausages. I guess most people come here for the Oktoberfest. This is Europes biggest drinking occasion, not to be missed if you're around. I visited here on a day off from skiing in the Austrian Tyrol. ...

Advantages: Friendly, cosmopolitan, easy to get to
Disadvantages: Not cheap

Munich is a great place to spend a few days or weeks. Apart from the world's biggest beerfestival which takes place every September it has a number of other attractions.
