History comes alive.

Advantages: Free, lots to see, great for all ages.
Disadvantages: Lots of walking.

...Fagans is an open air museum and was opened on 1 July 1948. The museum has over forty original buildings, moved from various parts of Wales and re-erected to show how the people of Wales lived, worked and spent their leisure time over the last five hundred years. The Museum stands in the grounds of St Fagans Castle, a late 16th-century manor house which was donated to the people of Wales by the Earl of Plymouth. I first visited St. Fagans about ...

Probably the best history in Wales

Advantages: Free entry, good public transport links, plenty to do
Disadvantages: Hordes of schoolchildren in term time, not all parts have wheelchair access

...- in this case, the Museum of Welsh Life. As I happened to be in Cardiff on a bit of a jaunt over the summer, I spent a day at this site (armed with my trusty ciao goggles of course!). The Museum of Welsh Life is the oldest open-air museum in Britain (having opened in 1948), and claims to be the most visited heritage attraction in Wales. Occupying an enormous 104 acre site in a wooded valley, it has an assorted collection of buildings (most of which ...
...will lead you to the museum car park. You may find it easier to use public transport, though, and this is surprisingly well catered for (I am used to not being able to visit places through the lack of a car). The 320 bus runs hourly (at 20 minutes past the hour) from stand B of Cardiff Central bus station, and drops you off right outside the entrance gates - coming back, they run at 50 minutes past the hour just across the road to the entrance (it ...

Welsh History in a Stunning Location

Advantages: Plenty to see and do - beautiful scenery
Disadvantages: Limited accessibility in places

---LOCATION AND ACCESSIBILITY--- The Museum of Welsh Life is to be found on the outskirts of Cardiff, about 4 miles from the city centre in a village called St Fagans. Take Junction 33 off the M4 to the A4232, and follow the signposts - turn left just after the level crossing into the main car parking area. Parking is £2.50 per car, but entrance to the Museum itself is free. There are dedicated spaces for disabled visitors and ramps provide access ...
...---GENERAL OVERVIEW--- The Museum of Welsh Life, is a 100 acre open air museum comprising a main gallery building and a collection of reconstructed buildings situated in the grounds, gathered from all over Wales. This is a popular outdoor attraction where the visitor is able to wander around the impressive grounds and go into selected buildings to see how the people of Wales lived and worked in times past. Originally, over 30 buildings were relocated ...

A Great Day Out

Advantages: Fun. Educational. History.
Disadvantages: Poor food at the cafe. Gets busy at times

...on a visit to the Museum of Welsh Life. The Museum is located in the 100 acre grounds of the magnificent St Fagans Castle,a late 16 th century manor house generously donated to the people of Wales by the Earl of Plymouth. It is only about 4 miles from the city centre and there was ample car parking on the day we visited. The area is very verdant and lush and it is quite difficult to imagine you are actually on the outskirts of a national capital. ...
...There are staff of the Museum on hand if you have unresolved questions you would like to find an answer to. In the process of strolling through the park visiting the various exhibitions you do get an insight into how the Welsh folk lived in yesteryear. It is not surprising really that it is Wales' most popular heritage attraction. The grounds themselves are delightful and perhaps we were lucky but the weather was superb and we must have spent four ...

St Fagan's Museum - a unique experience (Update)

Advantages: Currently free entry, A full day out, constantly updating exhibits..
Disadvantages: Not good for a rainy day

...a visit to St. Fagan's Museum about 5 miles west of Cardiff. Set in around 100 acres of parkland, I feel this museum to be unique, although being Welsh, I may be a little biased! You would need to be prepared to spend several hours or even an entire day here because there is so much to see in the grounds and it is constantly being added to. What follows are the features I found particularly interesting… · St Fagan's Castle is an Elizabethan manor ...
...is surrounded by large gardens that include terraces and water features · There are a number of farmhouses, cottages and fully functioning works buildings that have been transported brick by brick from their original locations all over Wales. These include a row of terraced miner's cottages from Merthyr Tydfil that are complete with original contents and portray life in the mining community from the past 200 years or so. · There is a fully reconstructed ...

Welsh Folk Museum (St. Fagans, Cardiff)

Advantages: Cheap, lots to do
Disadvantages: Not sure if you could cope here in a wheelchair?

The Museum of Welsh LIfe is situated approximately six miles from the centre of Cardiff. Admission is FREE! There is a bus service from the central station. It is also easily accessible from the M4 westbound and is well signposted. There is plenty of variety here for all ages. The Museum of Welsh Life is a large site of more than one hundred acres. Buildings have been brought here from all over Wales and re-erected. They depict the way in which ...
...fishes too. The actual museum building is filled with toys, musical instruments and even equipment that was used for torture. I particulary remember the old dolls houses and the dentists' tools! Arrgh! There is a row of cottages which definately have to be seen. I believe that the first one is 1900, then next door 1910, 1920 and so on. They are really amazing. They even have gardens/yards in the front as they would have been in those times. The ...

Housey, housey

Advantages: Something difference around every corner.
Disadvantages: Alot of walking.

A huge ‘museum’ which will take you several hours to walk around. It shows Welsh life through the various ages via the buildings that people lived in. We’re not talking presentation exhibition boards here; we’re talking real live houses and loads of them as well. Saxon to almost modern day are represented and most but not all of them are genuine houses transported from their original location to the Museum. The one that caught my eye was the terraced ...
...years – each house representing a particular period in time. Oh, what I haven’t said is that you can walk through those houses and really see for yourself what it was like. If that wasn’t enough, a short stroll to the opposite side of the ‘Museum’ reveals a stately home with permanent exhibition on display and nicely manicured gardens. You will not get a better day out that this. ...
