Everyone goes to Natal for the beaches. There are plenty of beaches in town, along the litoral. Many travel agencies in town organize tours to the sand dunes where you can be driven around in a kind of buggy jeep up and down the dunes. In the night the night-life along the beaches is never dull. There are quite a few discos and restaurants and it is nice to stay by the sea. Advantages: Good food and sand dunes Disadvantages: Some of the guys driving on the dunes are crazy!
Natal is the capital of the state of Rio grande do Norte. This state is not on the main tourist track when you go to Brazil. From my experience, if you like to lazy on the beach and have nice seafood for breakfast, lunch and dinner, this is the place you should go to. There are not many or relevant historic monuments here. Instead, people come here for the beach attractions. One of the main attractions is to hire on the local bugeiros for a buggy ... ...unless you meet other travellers who have gone through the experience already. Although the experience in itself is definitively worth it, I would advice you to choose a reliable-looking bugeiro (I could no find many, myself!). The one we chose, was fine, he showed us some of the usual tricks you would expect for this kind of thing, but safety was never an issue. An e had a nice lunch too. ...
