...In the early 50s the National Audubon Society accepted responsibility for the management and preservation of the area. An elevated boardwalk was constructed that allowed visitors to enjoy the wildlife and the beauty of the swamp.
The Sanctuary is open daily all year round although hours vary. Indeed it is noteworthy that the experience differs in the wet and dry seasons. The approach road is unprepossessing and leads through backwoods settlements. There is ample car parking and a sympathetic and informative gift shop. Essential to the visit is the Companion Field Guide which gives a short account of the origins of the Sanctuary and also lists, with illustrations the flora and fauna that can be seen around the area. Advantages: wild animals, whole day, lunch included Disadvantages: tiring day - especially in hot sun.
The Florida Everglades are a national park in which you can take a tour day-trip. The mini-bus picked us up from our hotel early morning and we set off into the wilderness. Before long we were told to look out the window for alligators - and we saw several. It was incredible how we could be in a beach resort (Marco Island on the East coast of Florida) in the morning and before long be in somewhere so wild and unpredictable. We took a river boat trip ... ...boat was followed by a pair of wild dolphins, jumping in and out of the water in chase. It was so lovely to watch these animals in their natural surroundings and to watch them perform under their own initiative. Much better than any aquariam park.
Our lunch consisted of alligator, frogs' legs, ostrich and other unitendifiable pieces of food. But we managed to eat it, and it really wasn't that bad!
