Advantages Advantages You can pretend you're the bloke from the chewing gum advert

Disadvantages Disadvantages May bring on manic depression and collapse of your spinal column

Being a tax dodging, pot noodle eating, pot smoking, drunkard student, I obviously need a mode of transport that is kind to my debt ridden bank account. In the case of National Express Coaches, I am quite content to forsake my sanity, spinal column and general allround happiness in favour of a few extra quid in my pocket when I arrive at my destination. If you're reading this review then I assume you have a journey to make and are considering National Express to get you where you need to be. As a surviving veteran of numerous coach trips from hell (and a few even worse), I feel that you might ... more

Advantages Advantages Quick easy to book, Good national coverage

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Fixed travel times

I last used National Express in April 2000. I needed to get to Gatwick airport for a trip to the States, and decided it would be less hassle to go by coach. I have to say the whole experience was relatively painless. I booked the tickets at my local travel agents and they were posted to me about two weeks before I travelled. I arrived at East Midlands airport at around 1am, and the coach left promptly at 1am. We arrived at Gatwick airport at approximately 6am, after stopping at Luton and all Heathrow terminals. The bus picked up at three more stops after east Midlands airport, but to be honest ... more

Advantages Advantages Reasonably inexpensive, mostly comfortable, on board facilities

Disadvantages Disadvantages Restricted leg room, slow loading website

My Ciao buddies will know that I spent a few days with Broksababie recently up in Whitby, and my next op is on my chosen method of transport to get me there! I travelled with National Express Coaches as they offered the most direct and the cheapest service. Travelling by train would have meant a 6-hour journey with changes at London and would have cost considerably more! My journey was actually only as far ‘oop narth’ as Scunthorpe; to meet a pal before we set off up to Ana’s together. I travelled from Aylesbury to Scunthorpe, along the M1, the total journey time taking just ... more

    Advantages Advantages cheap

Disadvantages Disadvantages dirty, cramped, no sustenance, disgusting toilets, no air-con, unreliable timekeeping

Until yesterday, I hadn't been on a National Express coach for about 13 years. However, my car had broken down in Exeter the weekend before where I had left it to be mended, and I needed to get it back. After considering my options, and my precarious bank balance, I thought I'd give National Express a try, wondering how much it might have progressed over the years. The train was out of the question for several reasons. Firstly, my local station (stoke on Trent) was closed for track works, and this would have meant a part-bus, part-train journey for full train price. Secondly, the price of the ... more

Advantages Advantages Lots of destinations, cheaper than the train

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Random fare prices

I've been to a fair few countries and travelled on a number of different bus services. It's safe to say that National Express is far from the worst bus company I've ever used (that would go to one in Vietnam) but as the UK's premier bus company really NE should be striving to meet higher standards. The Buses - Good points They look great on the outside. They have toilets, but it's potluck whether they'll work properly or not. On my recent trip back England I used NE five times. I used the toilet on two of those trips - once there was water to wash your hands, once there was not. The ride is ... more

Advantages Advantages well, you get there in the end.

Disadvantages Disadvantages unhelpful staff, no legroom, dingy old depots

Readers of my other ops may have noticed I don't drive and am a bit of a seasoned rail user. Those of you who've escaped my babble before will still probably have heard news of the recent 'engineering works' on the Birmingham - London rail route (among others). Unfortunately for me, it's essential that I travel that route on a fairly regular basis if I ever want to a) see my family and b) go to University. And since I've just had to go house-hunting (don't ask) in the wake of the trainline upheaval, I decided, like the idiot I am, to use National Express coaches to 'save any messing around' ... more

    Advantages Advantages Cheap.

Disadvantages Disadvantages Unsafe. Lack of communication. Lack of Customer Service.

When travelling by whatever means I like to believe that I am looking after my own safety and that of others. I’m quite well travelled as being a non driver in my line of work I really do need to know every route possible across the UK and sometimes even Europe so my knowledge of passenger transport is quite well spread. When travelling for business it’s fair to say that cost is never really an issue (except when BA are looking for £300 for my Manchester to Glasgow flight but then that’s another story!) but access to some bizarre locations is so use of NATIONAL EXPRESS has at times been ... more

Advantages Advantages Cheap, comfortable and easy to boook

    Disadvantages Disadvantages The drivers!

Personally, when I think of coach journeys, I'm reminded of day trips to Margate with my Mum & Nan when I was little, and as such, I have never been keen to embark of another coach journey. Until a few weeks ago, when I was nominated by my friends to find cheap travel and accommodation for a girlie weekend in Newcastle. After literally hours of searching around on the Internet, I had managed to book cheap flights home and a reasonably priced hotel. But I still couldn't find a way to get there! In my desperation, I thought I would have a quick look at some coach prices, although I never ... more

Advantages Advantages Schedules to 1200 towns at reasonable fares.

Disadvantages Disadvantages Uncomfortable on long distances and lack of refreshments.

It was as if a gun had gone off. The coach came into view and the grey brigade charged forward dragging their cases like chariots behind them. A very large lady, red faced by her efforts, made the gold medal position. Others rapidly huddled round her, hoping that perhaps she was now too exhausted to make it first up the coach steps. "'Old on, 'old on", snapped one of the drivers, "Yer can't get on 'till I've seen yer tickets". His brow seemed hot with frustration and there were a few grunts and groans from the mingling haggle as they tried to squeeze furtively forward another inch. I looked on ... more

Advantages Advantages cheaper than flying/trains at short notice

Disadvantages Disadvantages much slower than most other transport options

So after my happy experience travelling the other weekend I'm off on my travels again, this time risking a foray in to the world which my parents inhabit. So as Bolton has no airport, Lydd has no train station but both have bus stops it seems logical that I would consider getting the coach to Bolton. This is as far as I know the only national coach service in the UK (although in Scotland it is run under the City Link name) and is a member of the european Eurolines coach network. I booked my travel using the nationalexpress.com website the site is mildly confusing if you don't want to use one ... more
