Not So Royal For This Family

Advantages: Historical
Disadvantages: A Tad Boring

Nottingham castle sits high on it's hill, proudly welcoming travellers who happen to glance out of their windows as they enter, what we here consider, the world best city. Although the Romans had originally built a fortress on the land that the castle now stands on, it was William the Conquerer who ordered that a castle and moat be built on the top of the 133ft cliff that overlooks the centre of Nottingham. From the battlements of Nottingham castle, ...
...between London and the North. Nottingham Castle became a royal fortress for the next five centuries. Well as you can imagine over the years, the enemies of the crown threw everything they had at Nottingham castle. It was burned down twice, mind you it was made of wood back then, and when cannons and artillery were introduced it was battered from all sides. The castle was the stage for many a historic event. Edward IV proclaimed himself king in ...

1000 years of history.

Advantages: So much history.
Disadvantages: None.

...Robin Hood, the Sheriff of Nottingham and Sherwood Forest has made Nottingham Castle very famous. However, when the tourists flock to see the castle they are often disappointed as the current building is not a castle at all, but a 17th century mansion house. But, Nottingham Castle is not a place of disappointment, it is a wonderful centre with a 1000 years of real English history, standing proudly on a sandstone hill overlooking the city and the ...
...castle from the centre of Nottingham along cobbled streets to an imposing stone gatehouse. During the week admission to the castle and its grounds is free, but at weekends it is £2 for adults and £1 for children. The castle is open from 10.00am to 5.00pm. At the gatehouse there is also a small shop selling souvenirs and gifts. The grounds of the castle take in the three Baileys (different levels) leading up to the castle building. These grounds are ...

No Robin Hood but still worth a visit

Advantages: Green space in a busy city.
Disadvantages: It is not a proper castle

...you ever find yourself in Nottingham with nothing else to do you could do a lot worse than to visit the Castle Museum. I do not know why it is called a castle, as it is more of an old house. You cannot imagine Robin Hood battling with the sheriff of Nottingham here. (You will find Robin Hood outside.) When you enter the grounds there is plenty of grass for picnics and wandering around away from the bustle of a busy city. There are lots of trees ...
...take small parties down. Nottingham has been known for its caves, which have been used for many things in the past. Because the rock, which the city is built on, is soft, it has been the obvious option to build into the rocks. I have never eaten in the cafe but it looks clean and is usually well liked by other people. There is a shop at the entrance to the grounds selling the usual momorabilia. I have regularly taken my children to the castle grounds, ...

Quick review of Nottingham Castle Museum & Art Gallery (Nottingham)

A hefty trek up to the castle, my legs ached for days. Lovely views of the Nottingham, but only visit if you like art galleries and museums. I was dissapointed as I hate art galleries and found the price very steep. not any mention of Robin Hood or the Sheriff etc, as I was hoping there would be, except flower beds and shaped hedges. Don't go if you are expecting a Robin Hood experience, because you won't get one at the castle, unless it's Robin Hood pageant weekend in October. ...
