Advantages: Lots of wide open spaces and great target practise! Disadvantages: Can get quite cold so remember to take a woolly jumper.
...again – one day!
Otago is full of rabbits and weird weather. They would often have droughts, then you’d have to go and get your gun and shoot as many rabbits as you possibly could!
Most English people would jump at the chance I’m sure, but in the good old ‘deep south’, it’s mostly farms. Going out shooting is like going ot the pub for a pint – too much and you get sick of it!
So, it then turns into, ‘Man! ... ...an oxygen tank!
From Otago & Southland, drive up and visit the Manapouri Power Station, (it stinks like rotten eggs) then you’re ready for Fiordland – one of the most untouched places of the world.
(Word of warning – do not leave ANYTHING lying around for the Keas, a very michievious and cunning bird and take lots of insect repellant! You might even catch a glimpse of another New Zealand bird called the 'Tui'.. pronounced 'Toooeeee')

If you get a chance to go to Milford Sound, try to stay one night on the cruise "Milford Wanderer". You'd never regret for that. Most of the people have a day trip to Milford Sound from Queenstown or Te Anau. It's a very long journey and you'll find yourself most of the time on bus. We set off from Queenstown in the early morning, drop in Arrow Town for a quick look, then stop in Te Anau for lunch break. When we finally got there, it was 5pm and ... ...bus. But it was worth it when we finally got on the cruise and sailed to the sea. It was not a super big cruise but the room was quit clean. I couldn't feel any movement while I was sleeping. We saw the towering waterfalls and spectacular Mitre Peak bland into a stunning sinset. Fishing and kayaking was available on the cruise. We had a dinner in the evening and did some chatting with the other guests on the cruise after the dinner. All in all, it ...

Advantages: dunedin nightlife, friendly people, beautiful countryside Disadvantages: not enough time or money to see everything I wanted to
...for eating & drinking.
Otago itself is really gorgeous, and if you can, then take the time to get yourself down to the Otago peninsula, home of penguins, sealions and an albatross colony. You can also go and see NZ's only castle in Otago, although that's a tad misleading as it's really just a rather large mansion. The grounds and the views surrounding it though are gorgeous.
There's some great minibus tours that you can find out in the Dunedin ... ...and into Southland.
You can also fly to Stewart Island from Dunedin, you can get student discount so could go for as little as £50 return if you're lucky. Or if you're feeling adventurous then take the ferry over... But don't believe all the horror stories about the crossing that you'll hear.
Stewart Island is also well worth a visit if you can go. There are several hostels on the island and can be as cheap as £3 a night, and who could resist going ...

Advantages: Value for money with amazingly friendly locals Disadvantages: Hard to think of, trickier to get to than Auckland but well worth the effort.
...particularly cheap to see in Otago and Southland with tickets to the terraces at Carisbrook (Dunedin's rugby ground) for $15NZ for a Super 12 match, while I was able to see the Lions play Otago for $55 in the Neville St Stand. In Invercargill tickets for NPC games to see Southland Stags come from as little as $10 and of course there is the Southern Sting, 6 times netball champions to be seen for a very reasonable price.
All in all Southland offers ...

Advantages: Awesome atmosphere, great location Disadvantages: Pricey and lengthy flights
Having being born and bred in good old Dunedin I guess I could say ''I'm a tad biased''. This city is sure to please, closly located to some fantastic Ski areas, and of course don't forget that the home of AJ Hackett, inventor of Bunji jumping, is just a short drive away as well.
It may not be a 24hr city but the locals and the many students more than make up for it. The beatiful University buildings and grounds are a must see! Dunedin is home to ... ...notso-exotic sea creatures. (Watch out for the elusive Surfer-Student, a rare breed that is often seen at the beach, and seldom in lectures)
Prices for accomodation are sure to please. Roughly £3.00 GBP would secure a bed at one of the many friendly backpackers hostels.

...are abolutely amazing and the Otago Peninsula is one of only places to see Albatrosses. There are also various kinds of penguins in and around the area as well as the Happy Hen factory...great for pressies. The people are also amazingly friendly which always helps! Dunedin is also reltively easy to get to with daily trains to and from Auckland and Wellington (actually the same train) and Queenstown is easily acessible via minibus which is also relatively ...
