Beautiful University City

Advantages: Beautiful, Historic, Charming
Disadvantages: Busy at times, Lots of tourists

...cities that I have visited Oxford is my favourite by far. Many years ago I lived in Oxford and have very fond memories of it. Of course, when you live in a place you tend to take it a bit for granted and you do not tend to visit it's tourist attractions. However, recently I decided to take my wife and 2 sons (aged 9 and 4) to Oxford for a few days to show them the city that I had loved so much and also to remind myself and look at it from the point ...
...to give some flavour of Oxford from the point of view of a visitor who may go for a day or a few days. I would suggest that you need more than one day to make your trip worthwhile. I will not delve into Oxford's history too much or the details of it's historic attractions as that you can discover when you visit to the level that interests you personally. Any prices I quote are correct at time of writing as well as I can remember and I generally quote ...

Advantages: Attractive, cultured city
Disadvantages: Expensive, students ;)

My perspective on Oxford is not quite the same as on Colchester. I haven’t lived there all my life, but I have been studying in Oxford for the last two years. That only amounts to about a year in the city, but means I’ve tried quite a few of the attractions and know a fair bit about the University, one of the main tourist attractions, and the one I’ll begin with, after dealing with: Location/Transport Oxford’s in the midlands, in the county of Oxfordshire. ...
...Better still, catch the regular Oxford Tube coaches, which run 24 hours a day, and at six minute intervals in peak times – they take about an hour and a half to two hours but cost a reasonable £6 (one way). The main road links are the A40 and A34, and you're likely to come in along Botley Road (from the west), Woodstock or Banbury Road (north), London/Headington Road (north-east), Cowley Road (south-east) or Abingdon Road (south). Oxford University ...

A New Life In Oxford

Advantages: history, good mix of old/new, good housing, shops, relaxed atmosphere
Disadvantages: roads, transport, expense, tourists & students

Oxford...think of Oxford and it cunjures up all the usual stereotypical images - upper class uni students drinking Pimms or punting on the river; streets full of cyclists and Inspector Morse bimbling about looking for clues. However, one should never read a book by its rather dog-earred cover, as they say. Oxford is quite a charming place, which doesn't uphold all of its cliched values although it is true to say students & bikes do dominate the ...
...to this great town. Oxford central is obviously very expensive as far as home buying is concerned and is a very popular port of call for the commuter-belt fraternity from the South East. However, move to the outskirt of the town and you'll find some quite decent housing and decent prices. I haven't had much chance to sample the full delights of the city or what it has to provide, although obviously one is going to have to get used to all the tourists ...

My day trip to Oxford!

Advantages: A beautiful city, full of history and architecture
Disadvantages: So much to do and so little time!

...a very nice visit. Oxford is quite obviously in Oxfordshire, a very picturesque part of England. It is accessible by coach, railway and obviously motorway. However it is not recommended that you drive directly into Oxford, we decided to go by park and ride, which was very satisfactory. We went to the Water Eaton park and ride which is only 15 mins from the city centre, it is also quite cheap at £2 per adult and free for children, I'm not sure how ...
...15 mins to get into Oxford and we dismounted the bus outside St Mary Magdalene's church and admired the Martyrs Memorial, and my dad pointed out the hotel across the road, The Randolph featured in Inspector Morse and famous for its teas. But we didn't go in for a tea, and continued on our journey. We walked up and down a few streets admiring several beautiful buildings; however we really didn't have a clue what they were. By this time we were starving ...

A Students View

Advantages: Good Socially
Disadvantages: Tourists

...aspects of oxford. Socially oxford is an increadabily an light hearted place, during term time, (Autumn, winter and Spring) the streets are bustling with students ranging in age (18 to 30). People seem to be alot more happy, conversations with total strangers are not uncommon all with one underlying thing in common the fact that, they/we are all there studying there. During the day time Oxford is a regular shopping centre with quite a good selection ...

I would also suggest a trip to the uni parks which run from headington to oxford town, and punting on the river esp in good weather. if you dont like the night life of oxford, ...

Nothing for Teenagers

Advantages: Good pubs and clubs
Disadvantages: Nothing for teenagers

While oxford is famous for the achedemic side, the students, the colleges, the bicycles it is not world renouned for its facilities for teenagers. Ok I'm not complaining about the cinemas but they are just about it. The ice rink is the next alternative but this is still for townies and 7 year olds. Well is one thing to complain about what we do have and it's another to complain about what we don't have. Well some where we can hang out, ok there are ...

Morse-ish

Advantages: Can be beautiful and fills you with an awe of history.
Disadvantages: The expense!

I was enticed to Oxford by the hazy lazy and murderous days of summer that the city always seems to bask in when "Inspector Morse" is on the TV, and indeed there are some very beautiful places in the city. Sometimes you turn a corner and see some architectural wonder that takes your breath away, or find an olde worlde pub that you didn't think would exist any more. I've lived in the city for two years now and it is rough around the edges. It has ...
...its hideous shopping centres and an abysmal traffic system. But the biggest down side to the place is the expense. Estate agents now tout the town as a suburb of London, and you will find that if you want to live there, the expense is overwhelming. Pubs are at London prices, and bus fares are even more expensive! ...

A few important things for visitors to know...

Advantages: Beautiful city, even better if you can save a few pennies
Disadvantages: Be aware, and don't buy expensive things just because they say 'oxford university' - would you really want a bright yellow t-shirt otherwise?

...who is now living in Oxford throughtout the year, there are several things I have noticed about the city which are not often publicised; For a start, many amenities literally vanish during holidays. In Oxford there are very few places to get snacks and food after 6pm, and quite often the best places to go are the kebab vans, which offer decent food at decent prices. However, the vans and many other late-night food shops shut for most of the summer, ...
...Oxford in an evening, and bring some food with you. Also, tourists very rarely get encouraged to go to the better value places for food etc, and don't realise that they can get identical items for almost half the price just 5 minutes away. For example, the Cold Pie shop in the Covered Market sells pies and pasties for the same kind of price as I used to pay up north. And for coffees or snacks, the St Aldates Cafe opposite Christ Church is very good ...

Bicesterfarian on Oxford

Advantages: Close to where I live and London
Disadvantages: Foreigners, Students, prices

...this is my synopsis on Oxford follows:- The whole city has been revitalised, but somehow slowly? There are clubs over the city for most tastes. Downtown Manhattens for a dive, Park End Club for Kids, Zodiac for the chemically enhanced, Freuds Bar for student types, Cavern II for Gays and Andy, my mate, who claims not to be this way inclined! Po na na also for a mellow night of funk. The Old Fire Station is my favourite where they mix today's music ...

Oxford!!

Advantages: a lot of charecter
Disadvantages: expensive

Oxford is great! and this is coming from an oxfordian! I was born and brought up here, and after having travelled and stayed in other countries, I really appreciate this town. It is close to London, and at the same time doesn't have all the hussle and bustle (incidently there is a great coach service from her to London, almost every ten minutes. There are a lot of students that keep the face of Oxford changing, and with it people from all walks ...
...lot of charecter... with the famous college buildings scattered over the city centre, and walk in on on a sunny afternoon and you would think you are in the 17th century... even with the way they speak (smile). There are two universites here, both have a good reputation - especially overseas. There are lots of EFL language schools, and even some more specialised courses at various provaye colleges. The environment is condusive to study. I would ...

Dreaming Spires

Advantages: picturesque, historical, everything central-ish
Disadvantages: costs, tourists

...aren't exeaggerating or kidding you. Oxford has some of the oldest and most impressively breathtaking architecture in the country, certainly that I have witnessed, certainly more impressive than its university counterpart, Cambridge. In fact the 'dreaming spires' totally dominate the skyline, not to mention the help they have from other such notable erections as the Radcliffe Camera or the Sheldonian Theatre. But, enough of that, Oxford is also a ...

The night-life's never quite going to be London, or even Sheffield come to think of it, but there is an abundance of pubs with an absolute minimum of trouble. Try the King's Arms or the Turf Tavern for example. And if all else fails there is always punting on the river! Avoid Park End or DTM at all costs, for a night out try Zodiac oor Po Na Na, much more fun. ...

My Oxford

Advantages: Sights and Sounds
Disadvantages: DO NOT drive around the city center!

...about 10 miles west of Oxford but I still consider the place my second home. Most people know Oxford as a University town famous for its many colleges, which is why people also assume that everyone who lives around here is a snob. This simply isn’t the case. People from all walks of life live here and unfortunately, Oxford has one of the largest homeless populations outside London. Apart from the University though, Oxford has much more to offer. ...
...because they all ride them. Oxford is Bike Central and it’s almost impossible not to have a close run in with one. My advice to you if your driving a car (are you mad?!) or walking is to give them a wide birth because their movements are unpredictable at the best of times! Oh yeah, see how many buckled wheels you can spot. Seriously though, cycling or walking is the best way to see Oxford, you DO NOT want to take a car into the city centre becase ...

Not all spires and colleges!

Advantages: pretty, near the countryside, good public transport, easy access to London
Disadvantages: Very exepensive, busy especially in the summer, no nightlife and limited shopping and leisure facilities

I have lived in Oxford all my life. There are many good and bad points of Oxford and if you are thinking of living, working or visiting the city make sure that it'll will suit your needs before you come. Living in Oxford can be VERY expensive, whether renting or buying, properties here are extortionate - you will get very little for your money. Living here is so expensive that I've heard the government may start to give students London weighting ...
...overdue. On the whole Oxford is as safe as any city to live in, it has a fairly good bus service (even better if you want to travel to London), and is architecturally beautiful (I particularly like Magdalen Tower when it's lit up at night). More good points are a good range of lovely parks and the countryside isn't too far from the city for some escape to some greenery. There are also some nice villages and pubs and you can also do all the usual, ...

Cool for students!

Advantages: Wide variety
Disadvantages: Quite expensive

Firstly, it seems Oxford residents must pass a beauty contest before moving to the area. There are so many good looking people here. For students, Oxford has everything required. Clubs can be found that cater for all tastes - try DTM's (Downtown Manhatten's), Fuzzy's (Wednesday at The Zodiac) or Parklife (Mondays at Park End). Pubs, although quite expensive, usually offer some drinks quite cheaply and a few pubs have discount card schemes. For ...
...out to Temple Cowley Tesco's or the Sainsbury's on the ringroad. However, nothing beats the Wednesday fruit & veg market at Gloucester Green or the covered market. There are also plenty of restaurants providing all sorts of food. Take your mates to Maxwell's and take your parents to Cafe Boheme. All round, a great town with something for everyone. But beware, at the start of each academic year (September - October) make sure you have ID with you ...

The Ten Best Streets in Oxford

Advantages: N/A
Disadvantages: N/A

These are what I consider the ten best streets in Oxford, in no particular order. They have been included for different reasons, most commonly their appearance and architecture, but also sometimes what's on them, or their 'ambience' (i.e. the High Street, which is noisy and dirty with buildings that may be old but are mostly surpassed in quality elsewhere, but I think it makes quite a grand entrance to the city when you arrive by bus from London ...

High Street (formerly known simply as 'The High', which I prefer) Holywell Street (especially the crossroads at the Kings Arms end in the summer) St. John Street Ship Street Little Clarendon Street Museum Road Queens Lane/New College Lane (especially when misty or snowing) Merton Street Wellington Square (which would be so much nicer if people actually lived there) Rose Lane (because it leads so quickly from the High Street to Christchurch ...
