Advantages: Regular and very cheap. Disadvantages: Sometimes too many passengers.
...my years of travelling with P & O, AND if I have ever been late to arrive, which is quite frequent , they always get me onto the next ferry with an absolute minimum of delay. A tip to persons not travelling as frequently as myself, always buy a copy of the Kent Messenger before embarkation, there are always many special offers in Calais or for the journey itself in this paper - this week I received two free bottles of wine and a free case of Stella ... ...not go to France on a regular basis , plus I always get an excellent three course meal for two including drinks for £36 approx. when I am there ,following a very good day's shopping and sight seeing. Advantages: A cheap way to watch Whales and Dolphins Disadvantages: Standing for long hours
I have travelled on the P&O Portsmouth-Bilbao ferry twice now, as a cheap way of seeing a wide variety of Whales and Dolphins.
You can get a cabin for two people for about £80 each, this does not include any meals or any type of cabin service. You sail out on the Pride of Bilbao, a large car carrying ship.
There are three main restaurants, a breakfast and lunch type diner, as well as several bars. There is also a cinema, swimming pool, child minding ... ...games for the kids and night time disco and cabaret.
The best time to go on the crossing is between late July to mid September, the peak of activity for the Whales and Dolphins is August, thats when I go.
The days the boat leaves portsmouth are Friday coming back Monday, and Monday coming back Wednesday, and Wednesday coming back Friday.
Why is the Portsmouth-Bilbao ferry the best way to see the Whales and Dolphins?, it is the route the ferry ...

Advantages: Longer crossing gives the driver time to recuperate Disadvantages: Children can get a bit bored
I like P&O European Ferries. I live in the South West of England, so they are more accessible for me than Dover. They are quite a bit more expensive than their Dover associates, but, the comfort available makes up for the cost difference.
Last year, I travelled with them three times to various ports, and I hope to give you all a quick run down of the merits and demerits of each sailing. Break out the rum, and here we go.
Easter weekend 2000. Portsmouth-Le ... ...in our very old Jaguar, for a long weekend break. Thursday night 22.15 going over, and 15.45 crossing coming back. The total cost including a two berth economy cabin on the overnight crossing came to £147.00. Oh no, I hear you gasp. You could have gone from Dover-Calais for about £70.00. Yes, I know I could, but when your car does about 20 miles to the gallon, and really doesnt like having to be driven at 70 mph for such a long way, you start to ...

Advantages: Fast Cat saves on journey time, plenty of drink bargains in France, reasonably priced for day trip Disadvantages: Torture in inclement weather if you suffer with seasickness.
The British weather has been so pleasant this August, we decided to go on a day trip to Cherbourg. We usually take the car over to France in December to stock up on wine, beer and spirits for Christmas. The sea is considerably rougher in December and, in the past, I have badly suffered from seasickness. This time we decided to go as foot passengers. Living in Portsmouth, the ferry port is only 5 minutes away so this is a bonus.
We decided we wanted ... ...couple of hours earlier and the crossing takes just over two hours. We planned to go on the 7am sailing and return on the 7pm. This would give us a good day in Cherbourg. If you are going on a day return and you opt for the boat, you only get two hours ashore which is fine if you have a car and are stocking up on booze, but not very helpful if you are a foot passenger.
We telephoned 5 days prior to departure and the economy seats were fully booked ...

Advantages: Good terminals, excellent ships Disadvantages: Bar expensive
Usually when I travel to the continent I am going over towards Belgium, Holland or Germany. For our holidays this year (you will be able to tell when I went by the gap in my reviews) we went to the Cote Sauvage (Atlantic Coast) region of France. We booked through the Caravan Clubs excellent members service and sailed through P&O European Ferries from Portsmouth to Le Havre and returned on the same route.
After a pleasant couple of days in Portsmouth ... ...the port at about 1pm and the booking in was uneventful, we boarded on time and as a caravanner we were among the first to board. Boarding was easy and competed speedily and efficiently. We did then go quickly from the car bay to the decks but there turned out to be no need to rush as there was plenty of room in all the public areas. The ship was the ‘Pride Of Le Havre’ and it was very spacious. The sailing seemed to be fully booked but ...

Advantages: Comfortable, relaxing, reasonably priced. Disadvantages: Time of crossing
This is not a view about a particular bad crossing or a good one, but some general advice about P&O Ferries as a whole.
Having worked on the 'Pride of Portsmouth' and 'Pride of Le Havre' on the Portsmouth to Le Havre run for over a year I'ld like to offer an impartial view of the whole operation, services offered and general quality.
For those of you reading this who are thinking about going on a crossing and are a little apprehensive about the ... ...the largest and most comfortable ferries afloat.
They are both equipped with computer controlled stabilisers that reduce any rolling movement and ensure a good nights sleep - or drinking what ever you prefer!!
The food on board in the restaurent is good and reasonably priced - in my opinion the best place to eat. Otherwise you also have a self service style buffet 'cafe' which is cheap and of a much lower standard - just like you would expect to ...

Advantages: Faster than average Disadvantages: Poor quality, unreliable, poor service
We just returned from a couple of weeks in France and used the P&O Portsmouth to Cherbourg Super Cat Ferry. This is supposed to be a fast crossing (in around 2hrs 40 mins) but unfortunatly, the boat is suffering with engine problems, so the crossing times are now in excess of 3 hours. P&O have also rescheduled the timings of the crossings. We were expecting to catch the 19.00 (7pm) crossing, but when we arrived at Cherbourg, found that we were not ... ...back home.
I was not impressed with the way P&O handled this - there was very little sympathy and not attempt to contact people who were sailing to advise them of the changes. I would recommend anyone sailing with P&O to phone the day before sailing to check departure times. Had we been ware of the delay, we could have taken time to have a decent meal before checking in at the port, instead of having to feed to hungry kids at the port.
The facilities ...

Advantages: Great atmosphere, Relaxing, Disadvantages: Food, Cabin size
We thought we would take advantage of the 2 4 1 offer in one of the daily newspapers and for just £92 booked two return tickets from Hull to Amsterdam. As Garry (my boyfriend) had just finished a tour (he works in freak shows) we decided to pay an extra £20 each and have a night in Amsterdam so we were not rushing about too much.
The booking was easy over the phone although it was wierd picking the tickets up just before boarding, I would have prefered ... ...months before travelling. Anyway we picked them up with no problems and boarded the ferry in Hull at 5.30pm. The terminal was clean and bright and the holiday mood was improved with the ample free indoor car parking so no worries there.
Once on the ferry we made our way to the cabin which was very disappointing. It was tiny and the onsuite shower and toilet was almost impossible to move around in, the pre trip diet came in very useful. After enquiring ...

Advantages: Nice and warm, Disadvantages: Stampede to get off, can't turn the bleeding cabin lights off!
Lifestyle’s which is a disabled group from Salisbury in Wiltshire. We went to Cherbourg by way of Portsmouth one weekend, we always organise trips for disabled people. We met up at 5.30 & caught the P&O ship which sailed at 8pm. We had to wait in the terminal for a while, there was quite a bit of crowding & they actually wanted to see your passports before allowing anyone to board. Getting on was quite remarkable, there’s a long flight of stairs ... ...On deck seven there’s the reception, shop, hairdressers, Crèche, & Foreign Money bureau. There’s also a small restaurant on this deck, serving breakfast & a range of cakes & pastries.

The P&O Portsmouth Express to Cherbourg
If you want a speedy trip to this part of France, this is the way to go. By sailing at a speed of 40 knots, travelling time is cut from approx. 6 hours to just 2 ½. However, be warned, you do feel every movement/swell etc. so it is not for those who easily get seasick! My outward crossing was extremely rough & I have to admit that I found it terrifying. Coming home was (slightly) smoother but roughly half ... ...There are a small number of tables & chairs near the bar area, but seating is mainly set out like an aircraft cabin. Walking around is not recommended. The food on sale is quite expensive – 2x cheeseburgers, 2x ham rolls, 3x coffee, 1x coke & 1x yoghurt cost me £17. The area for vehicles is similar to a helter skelter and not easy to negotiate – the car in front of me hit the wall and smashed its headlights. According to the crew, this is quite common ...

...Portsmouth to Le Havre with P & O. We had with us 13 dogs for exhibition in Italy, and so needed pet passports for the dogs as well as ourselves. P&O were really helpful in loading us onto the boat, giving us a space with the car by the stairs so we could check on the dogs at any time (with a member of crew) and space so there was plenty of air around the car so it wasn't too stuffy. When on board the boat I was impressed by the service we received ...

Just over a month ago about twenty of us decided to go to Cherbourg for a friends stag do. The main reason that we decided to do this was the fact that the price is very reasonable (on twenty quid for the overnight stay on the ferry and for a return ticket that is amazingly cheap). The ferry itself was excellent with many bars and restaurants to be found with a good club as well. The prices on board were definately a lot cheaper than in England (change ... ...The staff were friendly and always very keen to help in any way (except for the security guard who must have had a hangover!) I found that the p&o team wear very good to the people in wheelchairs.
When you first arrive you flash them your disabled card and they will put You in a separate line from the others with your 4 way flashers on. Then When most of the cars are in up to the lift point you get called in and someone Comes and meets you and takes you up in the lift and finds a place for you to sit then arranges to meet you at the end of the boat trip.
